Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
I am fucking stoked for this. Looking forward to Massa getting fired this year, and it'll all start here!

http://www.pitpass.com/images/galleries/2012drszonemap/2012drszonemap_s001.jpg

Dual DRS zones this year, both on the front straight and the straight after turn 2. Weather report says sunny and warm all weekend, we should get a good idea of where each team is after the race.

Free practice starts Thursday at 7:30pm!

Where is the second DRS detection point...like India?

Either way, STOKED!!!

rage2
03-14-2012, 01:44 PM
It's just 1 DRS detection point. If you're good to go for Zone 1, you're good to go for Zone 2. It's basically 1 big DRS zone, with the exception of the high speed turn 1/2 "chicane" where DRS deactivates under braking and cornering.

Canada last year had the same thing on the back + front straight, with the Champion's Wall chicane in between the 2 zones.

What do you have against Massa?! (Other than he's clearly not good enough to be in the Top 5) :dunno:

Dunno. Something against modern Brazilian drivers I think. I couldn't stand Barrichello's dumbass face either.

I wonder if Mercedes' DRS activated F-duct system will give them a big advantage on straight line speed in Melbourne.

Mibz
03-15-2012, 01:52 PM
From what I read, which is admittedly not a lot, it's less for straight line speed and more for balance so the car is more easily controlled and the guys are more confident around corners. I could be wrong though.

I imagine if they're in dirty air it wouldn't make a whole lot of difference anyway.

rage2
03-15-2012, 02:46 PM
The DRS F-Duct is purely for qualifying performances, and aero balance as Mibz stated. There is a small gain in drag reduction as well.

In terms of drag for an F1 car, from most drag to least drag:

1. Rear wing
2. Tires
3. Body
4. Front wing

So ya, you're not shedding a whole lot of drag with a blown front wing.

Massa spun and beached himself. Gets on the radio talks about weird behavior, brakes and bump. Replay shows he got on the grass. Announcer says "The cameras don't lie" haha. Camera zooms into Ferrari pits, crew is prepping the vaccuum cleaner. Announcers laughs about them cleaning Massa's car.

Zero time between Hamilton and Button. Would've been cool to see how close if Rosberg didn't block him.

Ferrari is fucked. Car handles like an old 911 haha.

McLaren 1-2 woohoo. Too bad RBR never shows their speed till Q3.

I dunno what's up with Red Bull. On one hand I think they're sandbagging and going to rape everyone in Q3. On the other hand, that's what I thought about McLaren in 2009, but turns out they got it all wrong. We'll see in a few hrs!

I thought I heard Steve Matchett (sp?) during P2 mention something about the Renault-powered cars being somewhat disadvantaged now by the loss of the exhaust-blown diffusers this year, which they were so reliant on last year.

Or did I get that all wrong?

rage2
03-16-2012, 07:29 PM
If you look at Silverstone 2011, where off throttle blowing was banned, it didn't affect Red Bull much, and totally killed McLaren. I don't think RBR was that dependant on the blown diffuser...

RBR is still doing something off throttle. Their car sounds completely different off throttle than any other car. Not sure how they get away with it since the rules have been much more strict now.

rage2
03-16-2012, 09:44 PM
RBR finally turned it up. There's almost no time between them and McLaren, maybe 0.1s slower than McLaren on prime tires.

Ferrari is in trouble, they need options to match RBR and McLaren on primes. They've stopped their prime tire program, fully on the options now.

Mercedes looking damn good too. Looks even with RBR on primes, and a tad slower than McLaren on options.

Still waiting for RBR to do a soft tire run.

edit - guess that's not happening. Vettel pushes too hard, goes off.

Jesus Christ the BBC coverage sucks ass this year. So obvious the budget has been cut; sounds like they are using one mic, no in car sound...fuuuck . I was hoping TSN would pay up for the ITV feed.

Edit: I now blame TSN. No radio transmissions? wtf? Where is the global feed sound?

Edit: I now blame TSN. No radio transmissions? wtf? Where is the global feed sound? Pretty sure what we're seeing on TSN is Sky Sports who just took over for BBC this year. On top of that, FOM is using a bunch of new cameras and new technologies. There will be bugs.

I also thought ITV didn't do F1 coverage anymore.

I wouldn't be upset if the rest of the season went as splendidly as qualifying did. My god. Massa fails, Alonso gets angry, McLarens locks out, HRT misses 107%... *tear* It's glorious.

Lotus and Red Bull are considering a protest over Mercedes' DRS-activated F-duct, (http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/98126) but McLaren is looking to copy it. Well it wouldn't be F1 without a controversy...

Yeah, but are they actually going to ENFORCE that this year? I could've sworn there were at least a couple races last year where by my math HRT didn't make it, and yet there they were on the starting grid on sunday. :dunno:

I'm not running the F1 Pool this season (at least not for money) as I joined the Planet F1 Fantasy League instead, but if anyone wants to make picks, you can re-use last years Sub-league (Beyond.ca F1) on F1toto.com..

I think I am going to make some picks and just see how I stack up against the rest of the website.

Qualifying was Awesome last night! So excited for tonight. :D

They used that ability a couple times last year, you're right. However, HRT didn't race in Australia last year and they won't be racing in Australia this year.

I imagine they're going to need some dramatic results to stick around much longer.

My bad, on ITV vs Sky, I read enough UK F1 websites I should remember that Sky has it this year.

So what happens for the races that BBC doesn't have the rights to broadcast live for? From what I have read they will do all the races, but many will be tape delay. Where Sky will have all live, but Sky is pay vs. BBC free to air in the UK.

Long story short, what happens for us? We get BBC live before the UK does?

^^ James Allen was doing commentary with Brundle on ITV. He is now the interviewer for the official press conferences. I thought he was great, much better than the first BBC dude and now this idiot from SKY.... And he certainly knows what he's talking about, been working F1 since 1990.

Whats with the ITV stuff? F1 finished on ITV years ago, BBC sold pretty much all of the rights to SKY because they had budget cuts.

Sky television will broadcast all practice and qualifying sessions and every race live on a dedicated pay TV Formula One channel in Britain, though the action will be broadcast in HD and without adverts.

The 10 races shown live on BBC One and BBC HD will be: China (15 April), Spain (13 May), Monaco (27 May), Europe (24 June), Britain (8 July), Belgium (2 September), Singapore (23 September), Korea (14 October), Abu Dhabi (4 November) and Brazil (25 November). There will be extended highlights programmes on BBC One of the other 10, of either 90-minute or two-hour duration depending on the location of the race.

Ben Edwards took over Martin Brundle's position and Brundle pissed off to Sky because they offered him mega bucks, 30 quid a month to watch F1 on Sky, pissed off a lot of F1 fans back in the UK.

TSN had the BBC feed and I think it will be the BBC feed all season.

Got the live timing app for android this year, it is amazing! I found myself looking at the phone quite a few times during the race since the tv coverage on TSN was lacking (imo). No pre show coverage at all either, they tuned in just as the race was starting. Speed didnt even show the race live? I havent been paying enough attention, whats the best way to watch this year? Im on Shaw and I didnt see any coverage other than tsn.

Speed shows the race live if you have US version of Speed. I flip between TSN and Speed US to minimize commercial time. This year I've also setup a 2nd TV for live timing using that app.

Awesome app, shows tires, best sector times, gap and interval, purples... worked so well for everyone.

How do you get the US version of speed? Speed showed it on Sunday morning at 11 for me.

Yeah I love that app, I missed a lot of qualifying but I ended up watching the whole thing through the app, wasnt bad. I found it wasnt perfectly timed with the broadcast but was very close.

I also have a second TV set up and use it for the live timing, just showing lap times and weather on a split screen.

Yeah TSN had it live, they had no pre-show and tuned in 5 minutes before the race. They used the BBC feed. I also noticed that the commercials were longer this year and they were timed terribly. They are still going split screen during commercials which I prefer over Speed though.
