Thanks to the team over at Shadow Tinting, they meticulously wrapped the entire car, 3M’d all carbon fibre pieces, and added window protection film to the huge glass roof. They allowed us to setup our cameras to capture everything, so we ended up with a timelapse video showing off the entire process. 30 hours of work, compressed down to 3 mins.

Welp, now the time-lapse I was going to do of the 3m and tint on on my Odyssey is going to look pretty lame.

Awesome video! Will this wrap be more durable than the stuff on the C63 AMG?

Yes, I had this on my CLK63 Black Series, and it was no different than your regular 3M protection film. It's the same thickness.

The C63 was vinyl, which was only 1/4 of the thickness of this stuff, so every rock that hit it literally took a piece of vinyl off.

looks great. I need to source out a roll of this stuff in white for my car. Does shadow tint sell rolls for DIY?

rage2
04-23-2012, 09:50 AM
I think they do, give 'em a shout.

The stuff I used (XPEL Stealth) is clear. I don't think they make it in white (vinyl), but other companies do.

The vinyl stuff is a lot thinner and isn't meant as paint protection. High impact rock chip areas will get destroyed.

Is the hood 1 piece without a seam?

Yes. The hood vents had to be done separately though so there's a seam there.

3M doesn't have a sheet big enough for it.

I might have to go with Xpel on the next car.

It's such an important event that even an Observer made an appearance from 1:57-1:59 of the video. LOL.

That is correct. I was talking to Jared about that, 3M is working on producing the wider rolls. They're a little behind XPEL.

How did you zoom in and out so slowly with the time lapse (near the end while it was on the hoist and then back on the floor)

Looks so neat, everything zipping around, yet a wicked slow zoom.

Of course car looks killer.

Of course car looks killer. it was done in post production i would say. you can set it to slowly zoom to one corner

this is not the stuff for you then, as its a clear film that just makes the base colour satin.

$4-5k. Depends on car, and what other stuff you're doing.

Call them and they'll give you a quote.

All that money to make a car look like it's ready for paint?

-then again, living in the sticks, I've never really seen a matte car in person (unless it was primer lol)- maybe I just don't get it because I've only seen pics.

rage2

It looks nothing like primer.

My car will be at Driven this year, stop by and take a look.

I haven't done too much video work with good equipment before... my D90 only does 5 minutes of recording per clip and it's really annoying!

Very cool stuff, I think even a 6 minute video would have still been entertaining to a lot of people, it's a good video to show people that plan on attempting the job themselves to see really what is involved, how many hands on deck are used to complete a project like this.

Wow! Beautiful!
The matte on this looks alot better than the CLK because it has more lines and is more box-y while the CLK was more curved.
Interested to hear more about that new tail light tint with some up close pics if you can.

Almost... NLE with Sony Vegas, color grading using Magic Bullet Looks.

I don't think I've ever shot a clip that was longer than 2 mins. Leave the single shot sequences to the Hollywood directors. :)

Thanks. After seeing this car, and getting it wrapped, it makes the CLK63 BS look so dated. Very very happy with the upgrade.

I'll try to get some close-up pics of the tails.

perhaps I'm being bone headed and am missing something... if it only allows a few minutes at a time, did you just keep hitting record every time it ran out?

Beautiful! It looked awesome from the factory but really? almost too shiny with the chrome, the matte sets it off. It really does though look better on this MB though..

I dunno.. Can't say I am a huge fan of the matte look. I do like that factory dark grey silver color in matte though.

One thing that IS puzzling is the amount of chrome they put on the AMGs, even on the BS. Then you have BMW, that charges for black parts (AKA shadowline trim). In that light, the chrome trim is totally worth wrapping, especially with a black film.

cool vid... Jarod did my car too, obv im a big fan of his work, but this MB def looked better before. each his own, ;)
