View Full Version : Your favorite modifcation

As time draws near the end with my 240, I was thinking about what my favorite modification I've ever done to it is. Please discuss what yours is, and why (also state your vehicle). It can be anything from a floor mat to a motor swap.

I'll go first - '92 240sx (S13)

I'd say it's a toss up between my SR20, and oddly my S14 seats. The SR really is the mod that keeps on giving, everything I put into it just makes everything more amazing. And the seats... well, I guess I've never had a comfortable set of seats in the car before, and this is my third pair I've been through. At last, something that isn't falling apart, can adjust to a decent driving position, and isn't rubbing against the interior panels.

This is a tough subject because some mods are qualified by others, if for instance you have a stock civic with just coilovers and an aftermarket seat, you can say your favorite is the coilovers, but if you have a turbo kit and you install a large intercooler and large exahust, all three of these things are related and rely on each other to qualify one as a favorite.

If that makes sense...

But with that caveat out of the way I would say my favorite mod would be a 4 puck unsprung clutch able to hold 2x the power my car will ever put down. There is IMO no better feeling than a 400wtq clutch locking down the power from a motor that isn't even putting out 200wtq.

There is just something 'all business' about not being able to drive your car after a leg day at the gym or having a sore foot pad after driving home in traffic, also the chatter you get with some starts just fills me with joy.

Just writing that made me wish my car was buttoned back up and on the road for the summer.

I hate underpowered cars with heavy clutches haha ^ I've seen them break factory pedals and burst the hydraulics.

I've done a lot of mods on cars but my favorite mod that I've ever installed on someone elses car was the tubular subframe on a 5.0 95 Mustang. It allowed for coil-overs and reduced the front end weight drastically. Overall dollar for dollar the best mod I've done to a car.

This is hilarious.....especially since I have an OS Giken R3C clutch with stock pedal pressure that will hold 1200whp no problem. Get a better clutch bro lol.

My favorite modification on my GS would probably be my HKS T51R turbo. No other turbo sounds like it, it has a bad ass whistle, spools nice, and has good output.

R compound tires. First time I tried 'em it felt like twice the grip in corners. You feel invincible once you get a little bit of heat in 'em. I've done so much suspension tweaks and nothing compares to the feeling of R's.

Best mod I ever made was also a boost controller on my 1990 Talon Turbo. Best $20 I've ever spent on a performance part.

I think the best visual mod ever I just completed yesterday. The silver finish was wearing off on the interior parts of my CX9 so I recovered them all with brushed titanium 3m vinyl. The results are 99.9% perfect and it looks amazing.

Proper STB's on any of the cars I've owned have been the best bang for buck mod I've down so far. Just do some research before hand as the best ones to buy; and you should be good to go.

They've always drastically increased feedback, and enabled me to go at least 10-20kph around clover leaves & turns. I've always found the car to be noticeably more responsive.

Wider view, especially at the outside edge at the aspherical part. Here's a better pic. The image starts at nearly the same place on the right side but you can see how much wider it goes on the left side.

My favourite mod was the HKS 6 speed Dogbox transmission in my 87 FC Rx-7. Not to many people bother doing transmission mods, but it optimizes the rest of the power mods done, and magnifies the effect of them.
On a big turbo car, lag is a major performance issue. The Dogbox has a very steep first gear that loads the motor down, building boost and then has nice close ratios landing the motor back in its power band after every shift, shifts which can be done under power , meaning full boost all the time, once spooled, it stays spooled.
A bunch of us got together one night and threw it in, then I took it down the street and the car sounded like a crotch rocket bike, pinned solidly in the seat through every gear, it was awesome..
It is very hard on the car though, I blew the rear end out once I got sticky rubber.. Its also hard on the wallet, it has to be shipped to Japan on a regular basis for refreshening.

Ah, yes, I highly recommend the daily driver mod.

Doesn't have to be a lame car either. I had a nitrous GTI for a DD, and right now I have the AE86 DD. Just has to be reliable and preferably able to be maintained with picknpull parts.

Tires, tires, tires. Nothing else will help your car's handling, turning and braking abilities nearly as much. And +1 for the Z1 Star Specs; great grip in wet or dry conditions.

I have driven on the street in Hoosier A6s, and they are pretty dangerous. An R-compound tire has incredible grip and super stiff sidewalls, so the car reacts immediately to your inputs. Unfortunately, it also makes the car react immediately to surface changes. Instead of normal tramlining when you hit a bit of rutted asphalt, the entire car will jump halfway into the next lane.

I'd have to say megasquirt, being able to adjust any parameter you could ever want to was/is amazing. Being able to see how the car responds to fuel/spark/enrichment tweaks is pretty rewarding (can be a love/hate relationship at times). A close second would be wheels, not because they are all that interesting of a mod but I always do wheels last on a project car so they represent the icing on the cake for me.

Best mod on my Civic was retrofitted HIDs. Maybe at the time, I had never owned a car with real HIDs but the mod made a huge difference especially since I drove between Calgary & Saskatoon twice a month usually at night on secondary highways.

Best mod on my current DD, the S4, would be the Evolution Thor aluminum skidplate. With the combination of the lowering and the longer front overhang (compared to most cars), it seems to bottom out a lot more than any lowered car I've owned/driven. The skidplate has saved my oilpan at least on 3 occasions since I've put it on! Still makes me cringe everything I hear/feel the thump from bottoming out though...

For me, it's got to be the LSDiff in the truck. Had an open carrier, and it performed well, but in slick rainy conditions or in winter, it was useless. With the LSD, slick conditions are easily handled, and the grip around corners is much more fun. Definitly my best so far.

The best upgrades to my previous vehicles were increasing the boost along with all other supporting upgrades. That in itself transforms the car into another animal.

With my current, there's many "favorite upgrades". If I had to pick though, it would be my ARB Air locker. Instantly, that allows you to traverse an obstacle vs not being able to at the same speed.

Yes. My Black Series (with the Track pack) comes with the new Dunlop Sport Maxx Race from the factory. Whopping 80 treadwear, competition use, barely street legal. Completely useless in the rain.

I can't imagine running R's... I have garbage general exclaims and paired with my current suspension setup, some bumps on the highway make the steering wheel get ultra stiff all of a sudden while the car drifts slightly to the left or right. It's actually a mini panic attack every time it happens.

The way you guys describe the hopping from lane to lane seriously sounds like Grand Turismo 5 when you're running race tires on the N-Ring. Hardcore!

m10-power
04-29-2012, 12:10 PM
True r comps like hoosiers need more heat to work good, until then they are slippery. The r comps that come on high end production cars work better in street situations while providing higher levels of grip.
Newer UHP tires are a better choice for street use. I am running the new toyo proxes 1 on my 996tt, for a street tire they are very good. Turned 1:22's at RCMP last year on them.

Depending on the car, tires can be a big improvement but also highlight the weakness in the rest of the suspension.

My favourate mode is typically the exhaust, good sounding machine is must.

Depends. Tires first (always). I upgrade my OEM brake pads for the S2000, but that's because I want much higher initial bite compared to OEM. They both provide enough braking power, but one allows me to get a super hard initial "bite", while the OEMs are gradual onset. OTOH, I am gioing back to OEM pads for my ("new") Miata, because the inital bite just locks up the tires.

Absolutely, best thing I ever did, cant believe I waited so long. Where else can you get ~55 more horsepower and ~100 more lb/ft of torque for 600 bucks and still have the car perform exactly like it came that way from the factory?
