Just wondering if any of you knew where I could buy colored fluorescent lighting, either locally (Calgary or Lethbridge), or online. I've found a few websites of places in Calgary but have had no luck. I've tried 'UltraViolet Lighting Products' and 'signature lighting'.

I'm looking for this kind of stuff: http://edisontechcenter.org/lighting/420pxlwide/DSC06630.jpg

Does anyone work with these things? I found this stuff online as well: http://tinyurl.com/7gdnzz7

Is that just a sleeve that goes over a white tube?

Thanks

Just a thought but maybe try getting colored tissue paper and wrapping the lights cover. Wouldn't look as pretty but would give you the same effect if all else fails.

I thought about that too, but I wonder if the temperature would be an issue or not? I was also thinking about cellophane, may have a higher 'don't set on fire' resistance.

Thanks for the suggestion

They sell a variety of different light "temperatures" for aquariums at pet stores. Pisces has a good selection.

We use a ton of clear shatter guards at work, but I've never seen coloured ones. We buy ours from Commercial Lighting and HD Supply. I would try them. (HD Supply does walk-in cash sales)

I think they have novelty UV ones at Spencer's but I remember it being entire light fixtures.

someone can correct me if i am wrong. But i don't think fluorescent lights get hot. Isn't that where the energy savings come from with fluorescent vs conventional lights. I heard that most of the energy loss in conventional is lost through heat.

On topic though have you tried Calgary Lighting Products. They either will have em or be able to steer you in the right direction.

The bulbs can get hot enough to start fires as they age.

Another alternative if you can't find the tubes already colored; I've used this paint in the past, worked very well.

http://www.krylon.com/products/stained_glass_color/

I've seen it in more colors than what they show there, and I bought mine from Home Depot for about $6/can a few years ago. I think I still have a can of orange and blue somewhere.

Is the Krylon product ok for heat (if the bulbs do indeed get hot) or is it more for just glass fixtures (like a window)? And I'd imagine it's transparent, right?

I have seen a company named Pebeo (sp) that sells glass paint as well, but more for intricate design work, not full color application. I'd want to cover an entire tube (so that Krylon may be good, provided it can withstand the heat).

Just checked out all those websites everyone sent me, thanks! I think the tube guards are what I am after. I'll hopefully swing by Calgary Lighting Products tomorrow.

Oh and I checked out topbulb as well, they have limited selection on the colored tubes though...

Anyways I guess those tube guards are actually intended for protection when transporting the lights, but can also be used to tint the light! Though I'm not sure if it would rest directly onto the bulb, or if there would be space in between. I'll hopefully find out tomorrow.
