I am sure there are tons of these that would work for me but lately it's been the Somebody I used to know by Gotye.
Song is amazing and the lyrics are way too profound that I can relate to.

There is one song that spoke to me immediately. I still close my eyes and it takes me back to 20 years ago when I heard it for the first time... when my mental state was less than stable.
Most people will be familiar with the Cash version of it - but this is the original.... and while it might sound "old" today, it was amazingly innovative at the time... and can only be truly appreciated by someone who can feel the meaning behind it...

Sweet thanks for posting this. I heard this song when I was younger and always wanted to know who plays this. Kind of a catchy tune.

The guy who sings it in Watchmen did a cool take on it.
There are too many for my to have a "most". Goo Goo Dolls have a lot of great hits that I think fit in this category.

Interesting choice for a "profound song" (or is it the video visuals?). To me that was just a catchy 80s tune.
Why not go for the sentiment in Bowie's original?

Do the lyrics describe an astronaut or a man addicted?
Brilliance none-the less.

If you are looking for the astronaut/addict theme, then Bowie's follow up to his Space Oddity, "Ashes to Ashes" is what you want.
While Peter Schilling's song is catchy, he's not being original at all here.

In any case, Bowie rules, he was in Labyrinth and he used to fuck men back when it was trendy, or rather, I think he made it trendy.

I've taken the time to think about it PM.
Why are you so concerned with Major Tom?
BTW- Whoever posted "She Sells Sanctuary". Incredible how the vocalist moves to such profound lyrics and instrumentation.

Agreed, one of my all time favourite songs for sure. Its the definitive driving song to me.
Dire Straits for the most part has a number of profound tracks. On Every Street/Private Investigations being good examples
Stranger in Moscow - Michael Jackson has to be one of the most profound tracks in my mind. Funny how most people havn't heard it, IMO one of his masterpieces.

I always found this track haunting even though I'm not a huge Rolling Stones fan

I'm not really. I just like how Bowie came up with this concept that ended up being copied by others. Kinda like he created his own small mythos. When it comes to music it is not the lyrical concepts that move me or have a profound effect on me. It's the music itself.
As for Major Tom and that 80s pop song, I just like to see credit given to where credit is due. Plus, Bowie is a genius.
