View Full Version : Good headlight aiming spot?

I am looking for a good headlight aiming spot. Basically I need about 40 feet of perfectly level and flat ground leading up to a perfectly smooth and straight wall that is a fairly light colour.

Has to be low traffic and accessible late at night. Even better if I can make a couple inconspicuous chalk marks on the wall. Usually parkades are good for this sort of thing.

Looking to do this:

Any parking lot with a building? I liked parking behind churches and schools, to "aim my headlights", wink wink ;)

Underground parking at the Stampede Casino would work well.

They're never level. I found this one of the most painful processes ever...

When i apprenticed for GM, the guys would use a peice of corrugated plastic with some lines drawn to align headlights.

Might be easier (then you can do it in your garage)

Errors are amplified at distance, which is why I need a more space. What's 5 mm off close up is like several feet when far away. If the damn dealers did it right I wouldn't have to do it myself haha.

Symons valley rd. Turn left at the ranch go up to the top. The road is one lane each way but is developed for 2lane each way so you can turn around and park on the road. You have about half a k of road to aim lights and the good thing is its pitch black there. No streetlights, you're on asphalt, lots of distance, no cops, plenty of room on the shoulder as it is sbout two more lanes wide

Let me know if you find a good spot Jeff, i need to aim mine properly after doing the HID projector retrofit on my car. They are fairly good right now, but I want to make sure.

Some loading docks are flat (but not level) and will serve your purpose with considerably more than the 25 ft required between the headlights and the wall.

The loading dock pics and the ones with the dump trucks were taken near the Spyhill bottle depot in the vicinity of 112 Ave & 76 St NW.

If anyone else wants to come I'll probably go there in an hour when it's dark enough...headlight aiming meet!

Bring a laser pointer to help determine the car's center line. Shine the laser from the back of the car through the middle of the rear window and the middle of the windshield, using your rear view mirror as a reference.
