That is impressive, and yeah I am surprised the first Europeans that found them didn't try to dig them up and take them home, and find this.

The internet has made me question every picture I see twice, but doesnt the excavation shots look kinda fake to anyone else or just me?

I remember watching a documentary not too long ago that talked about Easter Island and they didn't mention anything about the heads having bodies either! This is the first I've heard of it. Amazing.

They're totally legit! There's a link at the top of the original article that points to the organization that's excavating and some of the pics came from that site and whatnot... the organization is well known.
