My roommate has a 2002 neon.

It basically drinks gas. Apparently getting something like 150 km to a tank.

She has taken it in and they're saying they can't figure out what's wrong with it?

I'm thinking an o2 sensor or some other sensor that is causing the car to run full rich? There is definitely the smell of unburnt fuel out the exhaust.

I'm just surprised the garage she took it to can't find the issue via diagnostics...

any ideas?

Apparently they've also checked the fuel pump and will be doing a compression test on the engine to negate any possible issues with that.

Any fuel in the oil? Possible fuel leak somewhere?

I'll have to talk to the mechanics to see what they're saying... something doesn't add up here. It's there job to catch this stuff. A neon is a pretty simple car... I think they're just lazy.

I'm thinking they'd of checked the oil and on a hoist, looked for fuel leaks.

O2 sensor, bad coolant temp sensor, thermostat, all can cause poor mileage.

Upstream O2 sensor, coolant temp sensor, leaky injector(s) are the possibilities that come to mind for me.

How big is the tank that gets 150km?

40-50L I'm guessing.
