OK at this point I can use any of the following for this project, silly Asus mobo only has microcode support for the following procs:

Pentium4 641 (C) HT 3.2GHz(65W)
Core 2 Duo E4300 (C) DC 1.8GHz
Core 2 Duo E6300 (C) DC 1.86GHz
Core 2 Duo E6320 (C) DC 1.86GHz
Celeron 360 (C) 3.4GHz
Celeron 420 (C) 1.6GHz
Pentium E2140 (C) 1.6GHz
Core 2 Duo E4400 (C) DC 2.0GHz
Core 2 Duo E6400 (C) DC 2.13GHz
Core 2 Duo E6420 (C) DC 2.13GHz
Core 2 Duo E6600 (C) DC 2.4GHz
Pentium E2140 (C) 1.6 GHz
Core 2 Duo E4500 (C) DC 2.2 GHz

Can pay cash, can also trade:

Pentium D 840
C2D E5300
C2D E6550

Thank you

Have you tried using any of the processors you have on hand with the mobo?

In my case, I have an ASUS IPILP-LC mobo (an OEM board built by ASUS for HP/Compaq) and it also had a very limited list of supported CPUs. The list stated that a Pentium D 940 works with it but it turned out to be an unsupported processor. Eventually I got a P4 531 (which was not on the supported CPU list) and installed it just as an experiment and it worked just fine, only that the CPU and case fans are sometimes running full bore due to the extra heat generated by the Prescott core.

So, maybe it's worth a go trying out your CPUs if you haven't done so already.

I've actually tried a boatload of different processors, the Pentium D 840 will post as far as to tell me it is unsupported, the others nada nothing. I got my hands on a e6320 this week and it works perfectly thanks for the replies!

I've got an older P4 3.4, I'm not sure if it's a 550 or a 650 but I can check. Would that work for you? If so, I'll trade you for the Pentium D 840 you have.

Sadly no but thank you.
