Hey guys new in the bike scene here, just finished too cool motorcycle school and i have my road test booked for next wednesday. May 23rd.
Too cool did help out A LOT, and they are really great guys, but thy didnt really touch on what to expect from the road test (probably because they offer another course for 130.00 to explain the road test better.)
But im just wondering if any of you can give me some helpful tips on what to expect and watch out for on the road test that i have next wednesday.

I know some tips already from fellow rider friends like make sure to not put your right foot down when stopped, make sure to cancell your signals. Anything to watch out for when parking the bike? and also if you are required to use hand signals like they teach you in the too cool school, or is this a completley optional tecnique?

Thanks guys!!

i just took my road test last weekend.

didn't need to use any hand signals, just the electric signals on the bike. made sure that i downshifted back to first prior to stopping and maintained the ready position for the duration of any stop lights. make sure you stop before the sidewalk prior to leaving any parking lots etc. ride in the dominant position in the lane (i.e. left portion of right lane, or right portion of left lane.) make sure you don't ride in anyone's blind spot and always check your mirrors when you are stopped at the light. make sure you are shoulder check, signal, shoulder check, lane change. also really emphasize your road scanning by moving your head back and forth. coming up to an intersection if there is a car turning left make sure you slide over to the right a bit, and if a car is approaching from the right slide to the left etc.

i got dinged 10 points for "riding too fast for conditions." tester was really nice though because technically i was speeding through a construction zone, but it was heavy traffic and i was just going with the flow of the rest of traffic. he could have failed me for that but since i aced the rest of the test he just wrote it up as a 10 pointer.

most of all take a deep breath and relax! number one thing is to ride safe and not worry too much about passing or failing. whenever you get on a bike the number one concern should be staying safe and getting back home in one peice! GOOD LUCK!

where ever you go, avoid taking your road test from the registry depot off of 17th Ave se. the tester there has no idea what he was doing. he dinged me for not looking at both sides of an uncontrolled intersection even though i did and hell ding you if your already turing right on a green light and a pedestrian crosses when your already half way done the turn

I was under the impression you were supposed to stay in the left of center while in the right lane as well? Would I get dinged for this?
Also in heavy traffic that is barely moving are you allowed to walk the bike up or is that going to cost me points as well?
Thanks!

just a quick question for those who already took their road test. is the test in 2 parts? 15 mins parking lot test and then the rest on the road? or is it just 45 mins on the road?

thanks!

none of the test is in the parking lot, its all on road.
Mine was about 20 minutes and was easy as fuck. As long as you have confidence you will pass

Road test only, they ditched the parking lot portion. Mine was about 40mins, took it last year at the registry in North Hill with a woman who was professional and relatively friendly. Obey the laws, signs, lanes, etc, follow the instructions, don't speed, slow down for uncontrolled intersections and yield to anyone on your right, watch your lane position and don't stop too close to the vehicle in front of you

Do the registries provide the bike for testing? Or do you take your own if you have one.

You provide your own, or borrow a friends. The only other way around that would be if you are taking a course like Too Cool. Those guys will include the use of the bike that you took the course with for your road test.

I did the weekend. It went really well for me I think. We went from rolling downhill trying to balance the bike without power the first day to going around the northwest for our road ride the next. They are thorough and it didn't feel like it was rushed. You get plenty of time for the drills/practice

I also did the weekend course and ended up with a Ninja 650. Go to Blackfoot and sit on everything, figure out what's comfortable for you.

Wouldn't it be illegal to show up on a bike? Since you obviously don't have a class 6 license? This is for my dad, I've had my license for quite a few years now but did one of those parking lot exams with Calgary Safety Council (I think that was the name).

Not if somebody with a Class 6 rides or drives with him. If you escort him to the test then it's totally legal.

You'll have to go inside to do your paperwork and wait for your appointment, so they probably won't see you pull up. The registry can't give you a ticket anyway, heh.
