rx7s are good on gas?

90's Mazda Protege's are amazing cars. Good on gas and reliable, will have no problem finding one in that price range.

For a car in that price range I'd stay away from any American or Korean cars.
Go with whats been proven to work. Stick with Honda, Toyota or Mazda (not a rotary).

^ Id say to avoid Mazda wholeheartedly. I've owned 4 90's (non rotary) Mazda's over a 7 year period, and each and every one was a lemon. Seizing brake calipers, incessant valve lifter issues, failing engine electrical components, sticking E brake cables.... just on and on and on. That 4th and last one was by far the very last Mazda I'll ever even drive, leave alone own. :nut: I dont miss a single one of those for absolutely anything.

I've got a 2001 Mazda protege
Black, 4dr, 5spd, clean interior. No less than 500km to a tank. Costs about 50 to fill.
Aftermarket sound system, 2 1100w 10" infinity subs and an alpine amp with cap.
Comes with an extra set of nokian Hakka r winter tires basically brand new.

Downside, windsheild is cracked. Got a quote to replace it for 200$ through a company discount. Not needed unless its a personal choice though as its a 2001 and doesn't need a safety to be insured.
Has 250k on it. Mainly highway, the lady who owned it before me drove Edmonton and back. I bought it at 230k from the auction.
Only problem I had so far was the power steering belt squeeled. But I changed that and the alternator belt at the same time.

Wasn't looking to sell until after next Friday so I don't have an ad but if there's interest I can send pictures.

Lookin to get 1750
But there's room to play.

Cavalier? Good on gas, and if anything ever goes wrong all you need is a 7mm wrench and a $20 trip to pick n' pull.

I wouldn't want a civic either

Echo or Tercel

For gas, insurance, reliability, and resale they can't be beat.

The Celica I linked earlier or the Cobalt looks to be a pretty good deal to me unless there's something terribly wrong with it.

^ Corolla's are gayer then Christmas, but if he likes it then....:dunno:

My bro has one, and Im amazed a car guy can drive such an automotive abomination. By far the least fun to drive car I've ever driven. Everything about it is just...... "wow, seriously???"

If I were him I'd look for a good used Tiburon, 240SX or a Cobalt (etc etc), just something with some potential that he can have some fun in. A corolla has none of that, and never will have any. May as well be an Echo or a Prius.

Dont say I didn't warn you if he does buy it. Their fitting cars for people that seriously aren't car people, but for anyone that is.... move along. :nut:

He's not a car enthusiast so he wants a reliable good on gas car. I think he's trying to stay out of trouble too, heck I got a Lincoln over a Porsche when I got my licence to stay out of trouble.

VW Golf, GTI & Jetta's

Reliable, good on gas, and occasionally available with extra frugal diesels.

:werd: An old VW diesel is the ultimate stay out of trouble vehicle. Not a lot, if any jam and incredible on fuel.

my first car was a 1986 N/A mr2. Fun to drive, reliable and the lack of power made it pretty good on gas :)

My first car was a Corolla Auto... yea it sucked, but it never went fast enough to get me into real trouble and it was more reliable than a wood burning stove. Still turned into a car guy though.

I had one as my first car. Boring as sin, yet practical and that drive train is a tank. The lack of power can keep him out of racing trouble.

300k of ownership (first 80 was mom though), only part to ever fail was the solenoid.

Certainly more fun cars are out there in his price market, but for cheap reliability as he starts his ?schooling?, not much better than a civic or corolla.

^ Holy fuck... You're a goof.
After my Z4 I wanted something that was zero maintenance pretty much, so I went with that given the deal I got on it.

With 250hp/250tq bone stock, a 14.5 sec 1/4 mile and a 0-60 in 5.5, its far from a corolla ;) let me know what your ultra bland transportation appliance gets in terms of those numbers, I could use a good laugh.

but thanks for coming out regardless.
Be sure to try again next time you're feeling ambitious.

Aw cupcake, you get upset for something you set yourself up for.

In one line you pationize another for driving a boring bland appliance, yet you're driving one that is not too far removed. Step back and reply with less venom, and more reasoning.

How about this for a reason?

"zero maintenance pretty much, so I went with that given the deal I got on it."

That's what a corolla/civic is. How is that any different?
You spent considerably more than what either of those two is worth, so a bit more performance is expected. Not an appropriate comparison.

0-60 in 5.5, is quite the reach. Not to sidetrack this to much further, but since you asked about my car's "ambitious" numbers are, well here you go.

If he is not a car guy, wants something cheap to run, useful and reliable in that price range then in my opinion his options are:
J-body (death trap)
Malibu
Neon/sx
Focus
Corolla
Protege
Sentra

Take a look around kijiji for some of these in his price range and have him check out each one, have him drive them, see what he likes about them then post back. You should be able to get 2003+ in each of those for under $3k. Also, everything I suggested is fwd and verycommon so pparts are cheap and winter tires should be available used on kijiji for reasonable price for extra safety.

He might be able to move from the J-Body to a Cobalt, and with that a decent amount of power.

I would go 00+ protege, or an early mx6 gt if he wants something a little quicker. I had a 90 mx6 and beat that shit out of that car, used as a winter beater a few years ago, sold it to my brother, and then he sold to a friend. That car has over 350k on it and never put any major work, and was actually fun to drive. My brother has a 01 protege, and as lame as they look, it is unstoppable in terms of reliability.

I know many people with these cars, so I don't know about saying they are lemons, but everyone has their own experiences. Myself, and many others I know would recommend these cars over and over.
