View Full Version : Birthday gift for 13 year old boy?

I mentor 2 young brothers through a Big Brothers type of program. The younger one is turning 13 and I'd like to get him a present under $100 or a few different things that will be under that amount.

Since they play alot of video games at home, I would rather get him something that will actually engage him physically or at least get him outside, and possibly get his gears turning upstairs. He loves the Calgary Flames, cars, and action movies. Was considering a remote control helicopter but I think anything in that price range may be pretty easy to break and wouldn't last more than a week. Maybe a shuriken?

Questions? Suggestions?

maybe something like roller blades, tennis racquet or some type of sport equipment that he could use, badminton etc?

^^wouldn't legos for a 13 year old be like a teddy bear for a 9 year old? when I was 13, I was skateboarding and playing in a rock band, and trying to smoke ditchweed.

Great suggestions so far. I was thinking of lego but then wondered the same thing about whether he was a bit to big for that already.

Buy him a good skateboard ! Not a cheap walmart one but hit up that shop in crowfoot, forget the name I haven't skated since, well, I was 13 too haha.
Wish I still did but completely not my style anymore.
A trampoline is a huge amount of fun when I was around that age too! Made me friends with everyone in the hood'

an MP3 player would probably be cool too, if he doesn't already have one.

I think there is someone selling second hand ones in the Marketplace, so you could probably get one under $100 easily.

Good idea on the r/c helicopter. I have a few hand held ones that can be charged using a USB port and their a lot of fun. A good idea as their cheap, fun, and you can do a lot of creative shit with them. Check eBay for " syma helicopters". You can get one shipped for well under $75

they have a few location in calgary and have a big stock of good RC helicopters, and definatelly under $100. they are metal ect so should last a good amount. My dad just bought a big one and a smaller one and he likes em alot.

Telescope

Electronics kit

Minecraft tshirts

long board

You could also consider a day trip - it'd cost you more than 100 bucks but a trip out to the columbia ice fields and back could be fun. I took my son, 11, there last year and it was one of our best days ever.

Thanks for all the decent tips. Got him an RC heli and took them out for a sports day today. Will be looking at longboards soon as a follow-up.

Thanks but really the boys have been such a blessing. Would highly recommend this to anyone who isn't a parent yet but loves kids. It's rewarding in ways I can't begin to count.

These particular boys came from a broken home rife with many different types of abuse including physical, psychological, and substance. People don't think twice to adopt pets at the SPCA that came from abusive homes but we tend to forget that there are kids in similar situations that have never been loved.

Needless to say, I strongly advocate this and similar programs.

On a serious note, when I was that age I LOVED building model cars.

And for the record, lego kicks ass at any age

I'd get him the same thing I got when I turned 13.

A kick in the pants followed by the words "Now go get a job".

When I was 13 my mom sent me up with a pilot in a Cessna and I got to fly the plane for a little bit. I don't know how much it cost, but at the time it totally blew my mind!
