Everybody wants Rick Nash. Carolina just jumped in the mix too. Rick Nash centered by Eric Staal.

Rumours are Jordan Staal going to Carolina as well. Imagine if Marc Staal wanted to go too?

Hope the Jets do something worth while this offseason. Signing Slater was ok, he's a gritty 4th liner, but we need a name, which I doubt the team will go after.

Jagr to test the market

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=398649

VETERAN NEEDED? JAGR TO TEST FREE AGENCY AGAIN ON JULY 1

Count Jaromir Jagr among the names that will be available on the open market on July 1.

TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported via Twitter on Monday that while the 40-year-old winger enjoyed his stint with the Phildelphia Flyers last season, he plans on testing free agency.

Jagr, who scored 19 goals and 54 points in 73 games last season, played the previous three years in Russia and helped lead the Penguins to two Stanley Cup titles in the 1990s. He also played for the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals.

A Czech native, Jagr won an Olympic gold medal in 1998 and a bronze in 2006. He also won two Ice Hockey World Championships in 2005 and 2010.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=399017

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Two of the Staal brothers are being reunited in Carolina.

The Pittsburgh Penguins traded centre Jordan Staal to the Hurricanes on Friday for centre Brandon Sutter, the No. 8 pick in 2012 draft and defenceman Brian Dumoulin.

Pittsburgh then selected defenceman Derrick Pouliot of the WHL's Portland Winterhawks with the first-round pick.

Staal will be joining his older brother Eric, the captain of the Hurricanes.

"Jordan is an elite two-way player who possesses a rare combination of speed, size, scoring ability and defensive responsibility," said Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford in a statement. "For his young age, he has a wealth of NHL experience, including winning the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2009.

"And he is obviously a natural fit for our team in joining our captain, his older brother Eric."

Jordan Staal has 120 goals and 128 assists in 431 regular-season games with Pittsburgh. He has a career plus-53 rating.

The Penguins selected Staal in the first round, second overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Sutter has 53 goals and 54 assists in 286 games with the Hurricanes.

"We want to thank Brandon Sutter for his time in Carolina," said Rutherford. "He has been a very good player for our team, and we wish both Brandon and Brian the best as their careers continue."

Dumoulin has yet to play at the professional level. He's scored 11 goals and added 72 assists for Boston College.

Ribeiro to Caps for peanuts. That upsets me. I'm hoping it's in preparation for something big, but it's not like they needed a ton of space and he only had one more year on his contract.

I don't know hockey politics/financials very well though, maybe somebody can educate me on how this was good for Dallas :P

Schenn traded for Van Riemsdyk. Kinda surprised Burke let him go since he saw Schenn as a future Leafs captain. I guess this means Dion's his undisputed favorite son.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=399090

MAPLE LEAFS TRADE SCHENN TO FLYERS FOR VAN RIEMSDYK

The Toronto Maple Leafs traded defenceman Luke Schenn to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday in exchange for forward James Van Riemsdyk.

Schenn, who was drafted fifth overall in 2008, scored two goals and added 20 assists for 22 points in 79 games last season. He finished with a plus/minus rating of -6.

Van Riemsdyk, who was drafted second overall in 2007, scored 11 goals and added 13 assists in an injury-shortened season of 43 games last season. He added one goal and one assist in seven playoff games.

"We are really excited by the parts of the game that James will bring to the Leafs," said Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke in a statement. "He will provide speed, size, and finesse to our top two lines and we know that he fits those needs that we have wanted to address for some time. We thank Luke for his tremendous on and off ice contributions to our organization. He's a true professional and we wish him the very best in Philadelphia."

The deal unites Schenn with his younger brother Brayden, who was acquired by the Flyers on this date last year.

He doesn't need to prove anything else. Everyone knows he's legendary. :)

Jokenin to the Jets

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=399801

JETS, JOKINEN AGREE TO TWO-YEAR, $9 MILLION CONTRACT

The Winnipeg Jets have agreed to terms on a two-year, $9 million contract with Olli Jokinen.

The 33-year-old centre scored 23 goals and added 38 assists with the Calgary Flames in 2011-12.

A veteran of 14 NHL seasons, Jokinen has scored 292 goals and added 391 assists in 1,042 career games with the Flames, Los Angeles Kings, New York islanders, Florida Panthers, Phoenix Coyotes and New York Rangers.

Jokinen has just come off a two-year $6 million contract he signed with the Flames in 2010.

Originally selected third overall by the Kings at the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, the Finnish forward has a wealth of international experience on his resume. He won Olympic silver (2006) and bronze (2010) medals with Finland and has also won two silvers and three bronze at the IIHF World Championships.

Jokinen also served as captain of the Panthers from 2003 until 2008.

Jagr signs with the Stars.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=399854

STARS, JAGR AGREE TO TERMS ON ONE-YEAR, $4.5 MILLION DEAL

The Dallas Stars have agreed to terms on a one-year $4.5 million contract with free agent forward Jaromir Jagr.

The NHL's eighth-highest career scorer, Jagr returned to the league last season to play for the Philadelphia Flyers. He socred 19 goals and 35 assists in 73 games with the Flyers in 2011-12.

The 40-year-old Czech winger had been away from the league for three seasons prior to 2011, playing with Avangard Omsk of Russia's Kontinental Hockey League.

Rumors of his desire to return to the NHL ignited after an impressive showing at the 2011 IIHF World Hockey Championships, where he scored nine points in nine games. He signed a one-year, $3.3 million deal with the Flyers, despite reports that he was close to returning to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

His 1,653 points make him the NHL's all-time points leader amongst European-born players. His 665 career goals are tops amongst active NHLers. He has played in 1,346 career games with the Penguins, Flyers, New York Rangers and Washington Capitals.

Originally selected fifth overall by the Penguins at the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, there are few honours Jagr has not earned over his 24-year professional career.

A two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Penguins, Jagr also won the 1999 Hart Trophy, five Art Ross Trophies, three Lester B. Pearson Awards and was named a First Team All-Star seven times.

He also won an Olympic gold medal with the Czech Republic in 1998 as well as a pair of gold medals at the IIHF World Championships.

Besides, why waste a spot on a roster on the old man. On that note, didn't Feaster mentioned he'll leave room to move some young guys up the roster?

With Hudler/Stemp/Comeau signed up front and Wideman in the back. I got a feeling a packaged deal is coming up soon..

From TSN:
"My thumb is down to the Calgary Flames for the surprising signing of defenceman Dennis Wideman. It's not that I wouldn't have traded for him or signed him. It's the five years, $25 million, no-trade clause part that I don't understand about this arrangement. Maybe they have him confused. Maybe they think he's a star. Wideman is, let's be nice, an average NHL defenceman. He's better offensively than he is defensively. But if you watched the Washington Capitals during the Stanley Cup playoffs, he was no better than the fifth defenceman on that team and often the least dependable in his own end. You don't pay star money and give star term for a guy on his fifth team in seven years."

WILD AGREE TO TERMS ON CONTRACTS WITH SUTER, PARISE

Free agent forward Zach Parise and defenceman Ryan Suter have both agreed to terms on contracts with the Minnesota Wild.

Suter's deal is 13 years.

Parise missed the majority of the 2010-2011 season due to injury, but returned last season with 31 goals and 38 assists in 82 games for the New Jersey Devils. He would add eight goals and seven assists in 24 playoff games to help lead the team to the Stanley Cup Final.

Suter scored seven goals and 39 assists in 79 games with the Nashville Predators in 2011-12. He was selected to represent the team at the All-Star Game in Ottawa.

The Devils had signed Parise to a one-year deal worth $6 million prior to the season while Suter is coming off a four-year, $14 million contract he signed with the Predators in 2008.

Both players were members of a star-studded first round draft class from 2003 with the Predators selecting Suter with the seventh overall pick and Parise being selected 17th overall by the Devils.

Parise, who will turn 28 this summer, has scored 194 goals and 216 assists in 502 career games with the Devils. He was named to the NHL's Second All-Star Team in 2008-09.

The 27-year-old Suter had spent his entire seven-year career in Nashville after the team of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He has scored 38 goals and 200 assists in 542 career games with the Predators.

Both players were members of the silver medal-winning 2010 U.S. Olympic team. The pair were also teammates on the gold medal-winning 2004 USA World Junior Championship team as well as the 2002 American team that won gold at the IIHF under-18 World Championships.

Yaa....I don't think there is anyway he is worth that many draft picks. Nashville is getting a steal on this but also their team just got significantly worse this off season.

Atleast they have a nice next few years of drafting ahead.

Some sites are reporting that they would be required to give up FOUR 1st round picks. I am not sure how valid this is; given the annual cap hit I thought they'd have to give up what you outlined, but maybe due to the bonus structure it counts toward compensation for an offer sheet or something.

Losing so many picks is going to hurt a team in the long run so Philly must feel that their window is now to win a cup. But with their goaltending not exactly being top-notch, I am not sure they quite have their priorities straight.

Over $1 million to $2.0 million Second Round
Over $2.0 million to $3.0 million First Round and Third Round
Over $3.0 million to $4.0 million First Round, Second Round, and Third
Round
Over $4.0 million to $5.0 million Two First Rounds, Second Round, and
Third Round
Over $5 million Four First Rounds

So yup, it looks like Philly will be giving up 4 1st round picks

I think Nashville will match. There's no better way to hit the cap floor than to spend it on your captain!

I think Nashville will match Philly's offer to Weber, all they have is Hal Gill to lead their front line and he's probably close to retirement and Nashville has 30 million dollars in cap space.

Do you really want a guy to play for you thats been trying to leave for a good year or two?

I don't know if this is allowable or not. But can Nashville spend the next 7 days finding someone who will give them a great trade for weber. Do a sign + trade??

Because Weber is most likely worth more than Four 20th+ picks

I don't think he's trying to leave but just wants to be paid market value. Can you really blame him? Going to another contender and being paid $100mill? Wow!

GROUP 2 COMPENSATION CHART
OFFER SHEET COMPENSATION
$660,000 or below None
Over $660,000 to $1 million Third Round
Over $1 million to $2.0 million Second Round
Over $2.0 million to $3.0 million First Round and Third Round
Over $3.0 million to $4.0 million First Round, Second Round, and Third
Round
Over $4.0 million to $5.0 million Two First Rounds, Second Round, and
Third Round
Over $5 million Four First Rounds

So yup, it looks like Philly will be giving up 4 1st round picks

I think it's different for 2011-2012

The criteria for RFA draft pick compensation in 2011-12 is as follows:

$1,034,249 annual cap hit or less: No compensation
$1,034,249 — $1,567,043: Third-round pick
$1,567,043 — $3,134,088: Second-round pick
$3,134,088 — $4,701,131: First and third-round pick
$4,701,131 — $6,268,175: First, second and third-round pick
$6,268,175 — $7,835,219: Two first-round picks, a second and third
$7,835,219 and higher: Four first-round picks

Of course if it is 110m / 14 years = 7.85M/year so probably still is 4 First rounds. BUT if it comes in at just lower say 109M what a final way to say screw you Preds.

What makes you think he's been trying to leave the last couple of years? I get the impression he wants to stay but only for the right contract and it's been taking a while to iron one out.

It's the bonus money up front that will make it hard to sign weber for Nashville. $68 million in the first 6 years. $24 million (I think) by July 1st 2013. That's mega money haha. The compensation will be 4 1st rounders, for offer sheets over 5 years they will take the total money owed over 5 years. So it'll end up being like $20.2 million avg more than enough for the level needed for 4 1sts. Hard situation for Nash. If they do match, you can't trade him for 1 year and by then you'll have paid out around $24 million dollars already of his 110 million salary. Crazy money.

My bad, I thought I remembered hearing something about him trying to leave. Wasn't sure if it was just an issue of him wanting a certain $ point.

Either way, looks like a tough situation for nashville to be in, that was a dirty offer sheet.

I'm curious if that offer sheet would have issues like the kovalchuk one did.

I'm sure when he signed his 1 year contract last year he was wanting to stay, but it's probably different now that Suter is gone.

When did Kovalchuk sign an offer sheet?

I'm not being very clear, oops.

I'm referring to the heavy front loading of the contract. 14 years with the last few years only being a million. I thought that was exactly what got NJ in trouble before :dunno:

Theres a rule now. Essentially it's like the 1 million dollar years are only allowed after they turn 40? Something like that.

Google "kovalchuk rule" for more info.

Nashville brought this upon themselves. Instead of paying close to market value for a Norris trophy finalist, they lowballed him with an offer of 4.5 million last summer then filed for arbitration to prevent an offer sheet, which got him 7.5 million which is closer to what he's worth.

LOL! I read a article on how Nashville paid 160 million or something for their franchise and are only worth 147 now and how basically their income from tickets is just above what they have to pay Weber to match the deal. Piss poor management if you ask me.

Gotta feel bad for the team it self though, they were a pretty solid team, and the thing I liked about them was they were one of few teams in the NHL that doesn't rely on one or two guys. It was a team effort, but guess they're gonna be set back at this point for a few years.
