View Full Version : Synthetic Grass

Has anyone had any experience with synthetic grass for your yard? I am thinking about getting mine done with them, but i wanna hear some feedbacks on them, as well as how much more it will cost from regular grass? Thanks!

While I don't have it, a few in my neighbourhood do and it looks great! I think it's deadly.

It's not inexpensive though. The cheapest guy I am aware of (Saskatoon market mind you) supplies and installs for $8/s.f. I would assume the initial "prep" is in addition to that.

thats very cheap....how long is their grass? the ones i have been looking at looks expensive, because they service for golf courses etc.

i just called http://www.evergreenturf.ca/ they said it is about $10/sqft, which is not too too bad

Not sure on price, make sure it looks like real grass though.

Seen a few yards where they had a very bright green fake grass. looks stupid in summer, and even worse when everyone else's grass dies and there is one bright green lawn

This is hilarious! I'd have to install a few golf cups in my lawn!
Seriously though... that's just cheese! Maybe in part of a back yard, but no way would I do the whole yard... especially the front!

QFT!! So incredibly true. I'm not a big fan of synthetic to begin with, IMO it looks silly when snow just melted and your grass is green as can be, but for the sake of your neighbours at least be sure it looks the same colour as actual grass.

I think they should make it change colour with temperature. Below 10 C it's brown, 10-25 it's bright green and over 25 a dull green.

I think it looks great, it looks real and nothing like astro turf. but $10/sq adds up quickly. The average cookie cutter back yard is about 1500square feet. that's $15000 + initial costs to level out your yard, so with gst and all prep it's probably closer to 16500-17000.

I don't think it looks silly at all and who cares if you don't match your neighbours. It's all about being maintenance free and resale value which this stuff has a lot of. There may be cheap brands out there but the ones that I've seen look very real.

My yard is currently being prepped with road crush for it. I think you would be very surprised what it costs if you do it yourself! Check this website out. Starts at about $3 and goes up from there. Best part is they are local. Enjoy

As soon as you lay that crap down, you've officially become the laziest neighbour on the street. Those "lawns" look rediculous all year long.

I like it. I know someone who got the $3 stuff from rymar and installed it himself. He said the install was very easy.

I have a patch in my backyard that NEVER gets any sun, and the grass there is pretty sick. I'm considering synthetic for there, but I'd probably go with the high end stuff, as I'm not sure I like the look of the cheap options.

Cost can be anything from $3 to $60 per square foot. There is a big variety.

JLau
06-21-2012, 09:50 AM
i think evergreenturf.ca are pretty reliable, the $10/ sqft includes ground grading, labour and material, which is pretty reasonable. My backyard isnt very big, so i dont even think it will cost that much. Might even put in a putting green lol Furthermore, they give you 10 yrs of warranty. No watering, lawn mowing, fertilizing for min 10 yrs, i think is worth it.

I just finished helping my dad lay down about 150 sq/ feet of this stuff. He went through a company called ezgrass, and I believe it was about $1600.

I wouldn't recommend doing an entire lawn, as it is fairly easy to tell that it's fake - but so far it has worked perfectly for the dog run. No more dead grass from dog piss, no more mud puddles when it rains. If it is a small area, or a 'hard to keep green' area - I would recommend it

Had it done for the backyard by Mirage Putting Greens, I really like the stuff. The grass is from eZ Grass out of Edmonton (google their website, it's pretty cool on the specs of the grass).

This doesn't make me the laziest guy on the block, I think the guy next to me who's cut his lawn once so far this year wins that by a landslide.

You also become the one with the perfect lawn. If I think about it, and the other one has just been cut, I'll take a picture of two side by sides close to me. One that is real and one that is not, we'll see if you can pick correctly.

I'd call it an exercise in efficiency more than laziness. If you're like me, by the time you take 50-60 hrs out of the week for work then you don't have much time left for hobbies, sports and fun. Why the fuck would I not eliminate a few hours of yard work each week. It's no differenct than paying a company to take care of it which, is what I do now.

I put fake grass in the backyard almost 3 years ago. I love it. I got mine from Perfectgrass in Airdrie. Cost of just the grass is about $6/sq ft. They have about 30 different kinds. Takes some work but I put it in myself.

There is a house at 4003 14A Street SW (runs into 39th Avenue SW), corner house, modern design, looks out over the dog park. I did not notice it as being artificial until in the middle of winter his lawn is all nice and green. The house is kind of grey and brown, very square, plenty of glass.

Does this fake grass absorb heat like a real lawn? If you have real grass is sort of keeps your backyard cooler so was wondering if an artificial product would reflect more heat back.

For the first quote:

There's a nuclear furnace called the Sun. It doesn't give a fuck about your lawn.

For the second quote:

I'm an insect, and am thinking that the real grass next door is more palpable. FFS, I can smell that biological treat from a mile away.

The rest fall for it and stagnant.

We as humans did not.

Now explain why we don't still swing through the trees, yet humans explore outer space.

What is the life expectancy of it? Maintenance must be minimal. What did it cost to put your initial 600 sf of sod down, buy the tools to maintain it and the time/expense on yearly work/weeding/watering etc?

I can't imagine it takes that long to negate the expense at ten a foot but, I'm not sure. I hire my stuff out as I have no time to allocate to yard work and even less interest. This stuff sounds good to me.... I have two beautiful city parks on two sides of me, annual money and time wasted on my lawn has no purpose.

I suppose it's a matter of preference too. I have the odd buddy who has that suburban pride in having the greenest most perfect lawn whereas I'm much more happy spending the weekend surfing at the lake or out on my bike or something than twiddling my greenthumb in my yard.

Wait. What?

You're not happy with growing, maintaining, and spending time and money on something that you cut down every week? ;)

Make your lawn a vegetable and fruit garden.

Wait again...

Do so and you'll be sued. Yes, sued for making the , well, uh, the sustenance of life.

What the fuck are you talking about?

bignerd has a valid question. A real lawn helps cool down the area surrounding it. If you are unsure of how this works, Google it. Lots of information on it.

Syncrude just put fake grass in around their building. Since the sidewalk is so narrow around their building, people were always walking on the grass and killing it, so it makes sense for them.
I've seen people walk by, notice it, and bend down to feel it with their hands lol. They used Train Lawn Care and it is lumpy and not nailed down very well.

I'm going to use it for my point of reference on the durability of synthetic grass over the next year or so.

Hi Gregrego,

Here is a message from our Calgary installer:

Yes there is pet friendly turf.
It will not match Kentucky bluegrass but will be close.
Normally we install a border to separate real grass from artificial grass as the real grass will try to infiltrate our artificial.

He's available today if you'd like to find out a bit more information!

Hi ExtraSlow,

Got an answer back from the Calgary installer, but he's not sure what you were referring to.

He said "We don't use topsoil to install the turf".

"Do you want to know if it is cheaper because he doesn't have to remove the grass?"

I have the stuff for dogs. Mine has been down for 6 years now. I love it, it makes cleaning up so much easier. The stuff I have is fairly green. I really do not think it will matter much to match as you will be able to tell the difference between the real and fake stuff no matter how close they match.

Here is a pic of the dog stuff. It actually looks better in person.

I took a trip out to Home Hardware in Airdrie over the weekend. They have 6 samples of synthetic grass. Least to say there is a huge spread in the quality. Obviously I liked the most expensive one at $6.35 a sq/ft called "Natural Real Supreme". Add $3.50 a sq/ft for install assuming you have removed the old grass.

Your lawn needs water more than direct sun to grow nice and green. Longer watering sessions, > 30 mins so that the water penetrates further into the ground and promotes deeper root growth.

Sweet, let me know!

This stuff is amazeballs!! My yard looks like it's mid July and I've saved hundreds of dollars and days/weeks in time!

Tips
1) have a good sprayer
2) maybe buy 2 bottles in case. I just had enough.
3) don't wear crocs, I have green toes now.
4) have a good pressure washer on hand to get footprints/overspray/drips off concrete.

I'm extremely happy with the results. Thanks ImranM!
