First off dont anyone say some cops are cool.... cause i realize that. Just that i never seem to get the nice ones.

Just finished getting pulled over for having a modified exhaust. Its is not loud at all. And the silencer is installed. The "oulet" with the silencer is not much louder then stock.

Anyways, so first there is a car tailgating me from midnapore mall, over the new over pass and all the way up to a&b sound by the lrt. Now i dont know its a cop but i'm not fucking speeding up. He continues to tailgate, yes tailgate. My passenger even joked i should slame on my brakes (i really didnt). So then the blue and reds finally come on. Great. He comes up fuckin this fuckin that.... you exhaust is modified.... blah blah blah.... i act dumb and say i got it put on for free from a buddy cause mine was rusted through (sorta, kinda true) anyways... he goes on to explain he hands out $115 tickets from modified exhausts all the time (as he laughs it off) and then explains how if they go to court he never looses  would you like a hero cookie.

So he let me off with a warning.

btw - my car is stock on the outside and i have been harassed about my headlights ( with "blue" bulbs and again with stock ones) my window tint (which is only on my passenger side and rear hatch) hmmm what else

cps :thumbsdow

Is this "chiming in" to you?

Rice is crap these days, just try and make your car look as stock as possible. Get rid of the front tint, the bulbs, and put as close to looking oem exhaust on.

I was in the same boat you were, big exhaust, slammed, blue lights, tint, etc and i alwyas got harrased. Since then i removed all of that, but on a sensible aftermarket exhaust(quiet and tip is 2.5"), put stock bulbs back in. I have zero problems now with the law

hmm i'don't think the cops will like me.. 2.5" cat-less exhaust, leading to a straight through dynomax "muffler", dumping out the side, under the right rear door (4 door sedan) :banghead:

But what would happen if you slammed on the brakes for no reason???? Could always say an animal was on the road or a low flying bird, but I'm not one to lie... Just curious what would really happen if one was to actually slam on the breaks...

man, doesnt matter..i was told by a cop, that even if a person slams on there breaks for no reason, you should be far enogh back to stop without hitting the car....fuk next time that happens to me iam gonna.....

I've often wondered about this. I've had cops follow soooo close to me and have gotten really pissed off. I realize they might be checking your plates or other stuff on the car, but a couple occasions they have stayed on my ass for long periods. I was thinking what would happen if I slammed on the brakes and they smashed into me... whether I'd get in trouble because its a cop and not some average joe.

i got pulled over just yesterday for goin 83 in a 60 zone. also my registration was expired (my mom hid the new ones so ALL vehicles in my house were drivin with expiered registration until last nite when me and my dad changed em all) and the cop waved it off and said "ill give you a ticket for only 15 over, and check that insurance out with your dad tonight. no need getting your car towed over something small"

and ryan i have NO idea why they keep pullin you over, your exhaust is small !

I've been reading this thread and kinda lost. I didn't know/realize that modifying your exhaust was a crime. I am about to install a Tanabe Hyper Medallion cat-back on my lude... can i get pulled over and ticketed for that? :dunno:

Ya its a great exhaust! But I mean can a cop just be driving behind, see your exhaust, pull you over and write you a ticket for a modified exhaust... what law are you breaking exactly?

googe
02-06-2004, 02:42 AM
there are 2 issues with modified exhaust
its illegal if
A) its too loud (i think 95 db?)
B) if the tip is wider than your stock tip

Instead of slamming on the brakes why not keep slowing down until A) they pass you or B) they pull you over. It will force them to make the decision, and from what I've found they usually just pass you. It will save you from lieing, save the taxpayers money, and if they pull you over and ask why you were slowing down explain that they were following too close and if you had to come to an emergency stop they would have hit you from behind.

Whenever a cop is following me for a while, I just pull over into the next gas station or something- and let them continue on. Of course they will eventually Find something wrong with your driving if they are back there for long enough.

This time last year i got pulled over cuz my car was too dirty!! Yep to much dirt said the cop. I was driving to work in the morning as a chinooke came in and lots of water and dirt on the road. I could see out of my windows. Then she ( the cop) stuck her head inside of my car and said NOPE I cant see out of them. That lead to $900 worth of tickets. So yeah be thank full you didnt get a ticket!! My car is pretty simple looking as well, more so in the winter!!

lets face it... rice is gay ... :thumbsdow

also... ricers will be associated (unfairly) with the street racing crowd by cops... that just the reality... its like having a licence plate that says "THUGLIFE" or "COPKILLR"... you are just asking for trouble.

in calgary the cops are tough on the modification laws and as they should be... bullshit or not... the law is the law... and you are REQUIRED to comply.

do yourself a favour and lose the attitude... based on your post you clearly dont like cops and you probably demonstrated that (subconsiously) when he pulled you over.

just be thankful he let you off without a ticket.

And that's just the attitude that makes things worse. Can you give one logical reason for having a larger than stock tip being illegal?

Sure, not having strobe lights and other rules that actually serve a purpose make sense, but just blindly accepting bullshit out-dated laws like tint, exhaust tips etc makes you a sheep.

But then you'd probably just quip "The law is the law" if someone gets a fine for 4km/hr over the limit on the highway. Baaaaaaaaa.

And what have you done about it??? Written a letter to your MLA, Premier Klein, started a petition lately??? Or did you just go and fight that ticket you got last week. Sorry fighting a ticket isn't doing much other than trying to get urself out of the demerits or the fine.

You also have to understand there are just as many mods out there that are not street legal. But they sure as hell look the same.

you never win against cops. superiority complex + friends in the legal system = you never win.

a cop could be two centimeters from your bumper while you're doing 100 down deerfoot, and if you slammed on your brakes to avoid a chunk of flying truck tire, you'd still get raped by the CPS.

I dont care what any of you say, I have never met a decent police officer in my entire life. every single one of them has been looking for an excuse to flex their superiority muscle. In grade 12, I had a cop take away a bouncy ball my friends and I found while sitting in the hallway because "it might break a window"

my finger might put an eye out, wanna confiscate that too?

it's not like I had a hardon for the some rubber ball, but come on.

I find it funny how despite the fact that the police service is supposed to protect society from 'criminals' most people seem to have bad experiences with cops. is that their job? to make ordinary kids with some loud or miscoloured stuff on their cars feel like criminals?

Isnt calgary the murder capital of canada at the moment this year? funny thing.

go solve some real crimes and bother someone else. pick up a prescription of viagra while you're at it.

just so you know, I've never had a traffic ticket of any kind. no photo radar, no parking tickets, nothing, and I still think cops are assholes.

I don't understand this 'enlarged tip' being illegal. LOL
Remember the 'Street Edition' Civic Coupes Honda was promoting awhile back? A feature of it was the 'enlarged tip'. It is also factory on both my S2000 and RSX too. That has to be the dumbest one in the book.

When were these traffic laws passed? I think it's about time they change them but it doesn't really affect me, I like my cars stock. LOL

I believe lowering your car is illegal too? Something about changing the original height of your front bumper? Wait till they start handing those out.

Most cops I've met to date are nice people. They always let me off with just a warning. 2 days ago a cop came up to us smoking in a car, he coulda made $750 in tickets but he just warned us. Not all cops are bad.

For one thing, I've seen 88CRX's car, and it ain't no ricer. His exhaust isn't even loud, fuck, it's BARELY larger than a stock exhaust. The cop who pulled you over is a total fuckwad and unfortunately you got the wrong end of the stick of it.

I guess i'm pissed cuz if 88CRX got pulled over for that kinda stuff, anyone could, even when they're not ricing it up. Next thing I know i'm gonna get pulled over for having my car "too loud" with my kick ass 2 8''xplod subs powered by a whopping 140 watt amp.

Don't get me wrong, i've gotten pulled over a couple times and when I was nice to the CPS, they were giving me the same courtesy I was giving them. I would just hate it when I encounter a cop like the one 88CRX did.

I was driving down centre street south just before the centre street bridge few nights ago at about 22:30 when I come across two police van stopped right next to each other right on the road!!! WTF??!!!! Just talking to each other for like 30sec while myself and 3 other cars are waiting for them. Probably talking about where to go for their break. :thumbsdow

I hear all the police groups (CPS, RCMP, EPS) are in a hiring mode right now. Demand > supply which means there standards might be lower as they don't have a large group to pick from. Might mean even more arrogant cops on the street with 'something to prove'. Can't wait for that.

Wow there is alot of hate for cops? I will tell you the truth i have had one very unpleasent run in with a cop. Officer hebert! I got like 4 modified tickets form him which totaled 500$. I fought them and got two taken off. I have also had an enlarged exhaust outlet ticket but i just payed it. These two time the cops were very rude and had no respect for me what so ever. Yet i gave them all my respect and got non back.

But i have also been pulled over a third time when made a mistake in which i broke the law. The story is a little long you can do a search i did a post about it a whille ago when my car got broken into. The cop that pulled me over was very polite and gave me nothing but respect and told me not to worry about what i had done ....a simple mistake. I fought this ticket too and got it dropped from 300$ down to 120$ and demarits from 3 down to non. I guess the Justice of peace said that the cop wrote a note saying that i was very apologetice and respectful. So he gave me a break.

My ex girlfriend and now best friends dad is a cop. He knows that my car is modified and is fine with it. He says that everyone has there hobbies and thats fine. He would never pull someone over for there car being moddified ( unless it was REALLY loud or unsafe) Because that is that persons pasion. The only time he would is if you broke the law and if you were being lippy to him. Most cops are good guys.

Im trying to say that there not all bad. Theres alot of good ones and alot of bad ones but never lose your cool be respectful.

I'm sorry to hear about 88CRX and his bad encounter. It shouldn't happen.

I have a question ....My car is turboed and the outlet on the turbo is 2.5' and my exhuast is 2.5" straight through with a 3' tip. Now is this ilegal? Also is it Illegal to have turboed my car? If i were to get an Exhuast ticket now could i fight it and say that my outlet on the turbo is 2.5"??? Some one know the answer to this?

not all cops are bad?

Khyron
02-09-2004, 02:24 AM
No one is saying they're all bad. But there seems to be a lot more bad apples than there should be. Or perhaps should I say more "nuissance tickets" while people who have their homes busted into are ignored.

common guys, think of all the times youve been pulled over by a Couple of cops, and now think of all the other cops that have just passed you and ignored you. yet you guys seem to only bring up negative experiences. Granted, yes about 1/3 of them are fuckers and obsessive about their powers. ill admit that and i wanna be a cop, but there are about 2/3's which are cool about everything.

and how can you say they dont deserve their raise? they've been working without a contract and a raise since 1992. 42,000 (starting) a year isnt a lot. thats only 3500 grosse before taxes. honestly i work at future shop and i make more than that, reason i wanna be a cop is cause i wanna help peeps. and everybody who is bitching, post your liscene plates ;) j/k heheh

I got busted in BC, and I have nothing bad to say about that cop - it was a sneaky trap, but it was fair. And I was speeding pretty bad so game on. I happen to know a few cops as friends of friends - and they are fine for the most part.

My hatred for them comes from the ones I see on the side of the road in a fishing hole getting easy free tickets that may be their right but are doing NOTHING for improving public safety.

My hatred comes from the lazy bastards that came to my friends condo after the door was kicked in, in broad daylight and looted of everything including their kids clothes. The cops found writing a report was an imense effort - let alone actually doing anything about it.

My hatred comes from a cop not bothering to show up for OVER 24 HOURS after a stabbing - because I told the 911 operator the cut was minor. It's still a bloody stabbing.

Do you think it's a coincidence that vehicle thefts, vehicle B&Es and vandalisms have been going up dramatically as our cops get more and more automated? Where are all the extra cops on the streets now that we've got red light cameras and multi novas? I'll tell you where - shooting laser in the middle of the night in a deserted construction zone in the attempt to make easy money!

Christ even Rick Bell was bitching after 15+ cars in his parkade were trashed and that guy loves cops.

It's the same with any job - an accountant who catches all the little mistakes but missed the 10,000 being embezzeled is still a shitty accountant.

The mechanic who fixes your door latch but misses the cracked block is a shitty mechanic. Etc.

I've spent some time reading the law on exhaust systems since I have an extensively modified system on my car. The basic requirements for exhaust under the new Traffic Safety Act in Alberta (and it's associated regulations) are as follows:

- Vehicles must be equipped with an exhaust system that cools and quiets exhaust gases and prevents the emission of sparks.
- Vehicles may not be equipped with a device that emits flames from the tailpipe (flame thrower, hot rod style).
- Exhaust tips must not exceed the diameter of the muffler outlet.
- Resonators are not permitted.

That's about it. There is no defined noise requirement, other than that your car must be quieter with the exhaust system in place than without it. There's also no prohibition against non-oem or non-stock exhaust. Curiously though, the exhaust tip issue makes a large portion of factory exhaust equipped cars like my '02 Mustang GT technically illegal because the tip is bigger than the muffler outlet!

Et voila, you see the point that is so absurd and yet the police are STILL enforcing it. It's being ticketed for something that is ONLY cosmetic.

Dammit my tips are stock sized - it just pisses me off more than it should.

The funny part about this law is that my factory Mustang is not technically legal, but my '90 coupe with the 3.5" dual exhaust is because it's quieter than open headers, and the dumps are the same 3.5" diameter as the rest of the exhaust!

I'd fight any ticket like this on exhaust modification though. I think the chances of winning are excellent.

$42000/year is like $22/hr. Thats not bad starting considering they need no post secondary education.
