I'm in the hunt for a used 3VZE (3.0 v6) engine to rebuild and swap into my truck. Anyone know where a good place to get one cheap? Prefer if it's already been pulled.

Pick and pull is your best bet.

There's a 94 2wd pickup with the 3vze intact - 214xxx km i think. May be off but i'm pretty sure 214xxx.

Sorry to hi-jack ur thread....but i do have a new set of plug wires, rotor and cap for the 92+ trucks. lmk if interested, just need to get rid of them. Bought them for my truck but it doesn't fit on 89-91. Was changed for 92-95, so my loss is your gain. These are NEW OEM parts too in original packaging.

Pics of your truck btw? I'm rebuilding a 91 right now :D

I am loving these old Toyota trucks. Got a 95 4Runner recently as my new toy so I will be joining the 3vze gang.

If you can , find out if the head gasket has been done on it . They had a recall on this in the early nineties because of the aluminum heads and cast block .

3rd gen Toys are hard to kill . In the bush our motto was always .... " 2nd gear four low 3000 rpm " .
With a mild lift and 33's , could get you almost anywhere off road , and I've never ( touch wood ) broke down . Never ! 21 years of bush bashing . Drivetrain is still solid and zero leaks . Body though ..... :(

This one was taken from a beyond run to Waiprous the week after I got it......

I've been using the truck as my daily driver pretty much since I've gotten it. It's losing oil so that's why I'm thinking of rebuilding an engine for it so that I can keep it around for a while.

Bokchoy, I'll keep the wires in mind. I don't really need a set right now. I saw the truck you were talking about. I actually took the steering column cover off of it. (I broke mine when I changed out the heater core last weekend.)

$100 and they're yours. NEW.

Also that front grill, that's from the 2wd. Did that just fit in no probs, know if i have to change my bumper to get that to fit or just direct bolt in?

Damn sexy trucks.

Ordered a water pump + timing belt + seal kit for my 3VZE as the previous owner hasnt changed the belt for ~200k. Going to try to find some time to do it. Wouldnt be too confident traveling long distances until this has been done. Would love to go on a Waiparous/Mclean run with you guys sometime as I havent taken her offroad yet.

Pics of my stock 1995 4Runner SR5, fully loaded:

Nice man, looks great!!!

How much did the kit cost you and where did you get it if you don't me asking? I have the timing bekt, gotta figure out how to change that bitch.

238k on my truck, don't know when the timing belt was last done...so this is something i have to do to.

lol thread hijacked.

$170 from eBay. GMB German brand which is apparently good quality. Comes with belt, pump, tensioner, idler, and 3 sets of seals.

In my head I think I know how to change it, but of course wont know until I try. Going to be a bitch to take out the crank bolt, but good thing I have a manual tranny so I can use that to hold the crankshaft while I take a breaker bar to it (I think). No idea how I am going to take off the two cam bolts as I dont have the Toyota special tool. These Toyotas are infamous for the amount of torque required to break the bolts.

I didn't realize about the bumper. It came that way when I got the truck.

Sounds like we all need our timing belts done. I say we do a beyond/timing belt change meet.

Frozenrice, you got more pics of your truck? Is yours an SR5? I've been told at the time it was all alacarte, so i've seen some with a mixture of everytthing. Generally a sunroof is a dead giveaway though. have you done anything else to your truck btw?

BokCh0y

I also used to have a white 93 DLX 4x4. Sold that to a good guy on the forum here too. I wanted a SR5, ended up with the black one i have now and it was 100k km's less. But i've been told this is a solid engine though, seen some at the wreckers with 6-700k on them.

Yeah dude i was totally gnna get a 4runner, but i needed something with a box so i can haul shit around and not have to worry about wrecking the interior :D The truck started off as a work truck to haul shit outta my backyard (re-doing the yard and then up for slae the house goes) but after having one....i really started to love that thing. So i've been using it more and more as a daily driver and a project truck.

Don't have any newer full shots of it. Nothing done to it at all other than I the side steps and rear fender flares that I found on Kijjiji. The truck is absolutely base. No air, no nothing. It is an automatic though. I also attempted to di noc the spare hood that came with the truck but it ended up in a big fail LOL.

Any of you guys attempt your timing belt yet?

This weekend is the weekend that I am going to bite the bullet and attempt to go for it. This will either end up in failure, or success such that I will be able to give out helpful advice on how to do this on your guys' engines

Wish me luck.

Whew....done! In terms of difficulty, it's actually not too bad. It's mostly difficult in the sense that you have to take off a bunch of crap just to get at the belt. Just a bit of mechanical common sense, patience, and following instructions...you will be fine. Some random tips to help you guys out:

1. To disassemble everything up to the point of removing the belt, one of the best step by step instructions is linked below:

http://www.instructables.com/id/1994-Toyota-4Runner-V6-3VZE-Timing-Belt-Replacment/

By the time you have everything off, it should be pretty intuitive in terms of putting things together. But it is still helpful to refer to the factory service manual because the Instructable linked above does not really go into some details of which I felt were missed (such as setting the hydraulic tensioner, or the detailed steps in putting things together).

2. Having the right tools REALLY helps. Having a breaker bar is an absolute necessity. This job took 3 days, but I think it could have easily been done in 1.5 days for a noob like me if I hadnt have to run back and forth to Canadian Tire so many times for random widgets. The 3 days also accounts for the fact that I literally changed out all the old components with whatever was in the kit (two idlers, 3 seals, water pump, and timing belt). I dont think a shop or dealer would necessarily do all this for <$1000.

3. The most nerve racking part was setting the timing correctly because even being off by 1 notch on the belt...you would have to disassemble everything again. Once again, just be patient and make sure everything is marked before you take off the old belt. Setting the TDC on the two camshafts is a bit easier if you unscrew the spark plugs (to relieve cylinder compression) but it is not necessary. If you find it difficult to turn the camshafts such that they will "pop" from one orientation to the next (you will know what I mean when you try to turn it)...then that is a good sign because it means your cylinders are holding compression.

4. The easiest way to break the bolts on the camshaft (only if you are redoing the seals or replacing the top idler) is to wedge a small socket piece in between the cam wheel and one of the inside bolts, then take a breaker bar to it. The crankshaft bolt is probably torqued at 200 ft-lbs so it requires some effort even with a breaker bar. Lucky for me, I have a manual transmission so I just put the car in 4th gear and breaker bar'ed that sucker off. If you have an automatic transmission you will probably need the special Toyota tool, or use the starter motor trick.

5. I'd recommend buying a $6 tube of water pump/coolant certified gasket compound on all your coolant seals (even on both sides of the fiber gasket that is included in the water pump). Because if you have a coolant leak, you will have to take everything apart and redo. Might also want to get some thread lock for the camshaft and crankshaft bolt.

Here is a pic of what my old timing belt looked like with 200,000km on it. Basically the threads of the belt were holding it in together as the rubber belt has turned into plastic:

Good work. How much time would you have taken if it was just the timing belt alone (no pump, pulleys etc)? Did you have a new tensioner or did you use the old one?

I'm thinking I need to do mine soon.

nobb
08-23-2012, 09:00 PM
The tensioner, idler, and water pump you just unbolt and re-bolt the new one. Hardly any time is saved. The seals might take a bit extra time since accessing the camshaft seals means that you have to take off the camshaft cover and also to break the camshaft bolts. But you have to do that to get into removing the idler anyways.

I used new everything. Idler, tensioner, pump, 2x cam seals and 1x crank seal. You might save $100 and an hour of time by doing just the belt, but it's not worth doing a half assed job IMO.

You will spend $30 in coolant alone if you have to take everything apart again lol.

I'm on the fence right now about spending too much money on it. I just want to make sure that the belt doesn't go on me. I've been toying with the idea of a newer truck or like I said rebuilding an engine and dropping it in.

3vze is a non-interference engine, belt breaks = no damage.

Nice to meet you today, B0kch0y! I think a bunch of us Toyota truck owners need to get together and go on an "easy" run sometime lol.

I've upgraded my old 95 3vze 4Runner to a 98 with the 5vze (the deal was too irresistable!) so Im itching to see what she can do :poosie:

Unfortunately I changed plans. Since my kids are getting older, thus bigger, they were getting too big for the rear seat of the Yota. I started off looking at 4 door Tacos and during that search found a really good deal on a Ridgeline that I couldn't resist.

The Ridgeline is real nice though. Kind of nice having some luxuries like a/c, sunroof, power windows etc. :D

Did you always have a topper for your truck bok choy?

I picked up the topper before it started to really snow...October I think? Thought better to have that instead of shoveling snow outta the box all the time. Also comes in handy to have in general.

Still sorry to hear you sold your truck yo.

I found very recent dealer records for much of the maintenance items, so I havent had to do much to her. Just some small things here and there like a new fuel filter, front brakes, brake/clutch fluid, and prop shaft lube. I am very glad to see that the previous owner serviced the vehicle almost solely at the dealership. Under the hood was full Toyota parts, from the battery, to the oil filter (with a proper crush washer!), and even the Toyota red coolant.

Will probably probably do the timing belt + WP next summer, but I am fully qualified after having done it on my old 3VZE

I have to say though, even though the 3rd gen looks very similar to the 2nd gen, the ride is completely different. SO SILKY SMOOTH and the power from the 5vze is heavenly.
