Hi there,

I'm thinking of possibly buying a used 2010-2011 Shelby Mustang GT500 and I was wondering if there's anything that I should be looking out for.

I also noticed how Ford is improving their looks lately and I'm just wondering of its reliability as well. Is it a 'livable' car and not a PITA? Comfortable, lots of creature comforts, etc.?

I heard one in downtown and I just fell in love with it.

Love the sound those engines make. Are you planning to keep it as a summer car only? Good luck with the search!

Yup, strictly a summer baby. I have an AWD monster for the winter slaloms.

Thanks! :)

My boss has one and recently admitted he regrets buying it, he says it's not pleasant in town to drive. The Z06 he sold to get it was a better "drivers" car and was just as good tooling to work as it was beating the shit out of it. YMMV.

Well, that's very disheartening. I was also thinking if it's easy to work on... It's not looking so good for the Shelby. :(

However, Corvette's are just on fire sale in the used market.

GT500 is a much better street car than a Z06.

The interior on the Shelby ain't to great, a lot of plastics and looks the same as a regular Mustang.

Basically a Mustang with better performance and suspensions, larger wheels, badging, and some exterior mods. At the end of the day still a Mustang to most people.

I would rather look at a Z06 or a Viper Srt-10 since the Shelby's are in the same price range, it might be newer than the vette or viper but they also have lower kms and a better car at the end of the day.

I would look for a Z06.

kissing those home ownership dreams goodbye i guess?

there is nothing wrong with the mustangs as daily drivers. i bet mine is stiffer than a stock GT500 and its great. 80kms/day is what i drive too... so yeah.

but i would wait out. buy the house before the car. its a lot easier that way... plus then the 2013s will be cheaper and that car is... :bigpimp:

LOL I just like to plan sequentially so that I know what to go for in the future.

Definitely the house first then a summer baby. But what?!

It is still a mustang though.

Thanks, Cos.

If it's anything like an 03/04 it's a rolling trash can on wheels with an awesome engine. I love daily driving mine because it's a fun car to drive ... who needs silly creature comforts when the drive is so fun!

It's not *just* a Mustang.

It's got:
1) a different engine (hand built)
2) a supercharger and heat exchanger/intercooler
3) different drive train
4) different suspension
5) different control arms
6) different wheels
7) different tires
8) different exhaust
9) different brakes
10) different transmission
11) different gear ratios
12) different shifter
13) different front splitter

basically everything that makes it move, turn and stop is different.

Aesthetically:
1) different front fascia/grille
2) different hood
3) different rear fascia
4) different wheels/exhaust as mentioned before
5) different rear spoiler
6) different badges
7) different interior face plates and badging
8) different seats
9) different shifter
10) different steering wheel.

basically everything you touch when you're driving is different.

So people who say they are the same are equivalent to people saying the M3 is the same as the regular 3 series. It's not.

As for it being a daily driver, it is if you don't mind driving stick. The GT500 is a proper grand tourer and very livable because it has a usable trunk and rear seats. The Corvette is a proper sports car and is therefore less usable as a daily driver.

Lastly: ever wonder why both the Camaro and Covettes have plastic covers over their engines, and the GT500 does not?

As for the clear hood window, only the ZR1 has that and you can't even see the engine - all you see is the plastic engine cover!!

I think a prize car should have a hand-built engine with beautiful craftmanship - not some robot-assembled mess that has to be hidden away by plastic in the shape of an engine.

The trunk on a C6 isn't un-useable you can fit 4 pairs of golf clubs with a few weekend bags into one there are a few reviews of it online.

Although it may not be pretty, the LS is probably the best motor available right now. I've seen some retarded big turbo cars/trucks go down the 1/4 running those.

That being said there is nothing like the sound of a Modular V8 Ford.

From a very generalized view, that Camaro engine looks more complicated to work on than the Mustang. :nut:

4 pairs of clubs? Like 8 clubs total right? Surely you can't mean 4 sets of golf clubs in a vette trunk. Very few cars hold 4 sets of clubs, and I highly doubt a C6 vette falls in that group.

If you just want a car that's fast in a striaght line and sounds bad ass the Shelby is the way to go for sure.

I've easily had two sets of clubs in my vette with boat loads of room to spare. I don't think four sets would be too big of a strech. The 'trunk' on the coupes is really quite large.

Looks to be bigger than expected...shallow but still not bad.

Holy shit. Its like the inside of a wagon back there.

I was definitely picturing the trunk of a vert then. Those are tiny, are they not?

Damn, that 'vette is roomier than I thought!

Even though I like having extra 2 seats, it gives me an excuse to drive only one fine lady, instead of 3 'meh's :bigpimp:

...Who am I kidding?

For people who want a fun sports car the Vette is one hell of a machine, for a young new grad wanting something 500hp that can also work with his life, I dont see how a Vette = a Shelby. Shelby will be cheaper to buy, easier to park and drive, more practical with 4 seats, and probably cheaper on insurance. Hell I would love a convertible GS Vette but I wouldnt get rid of my Cobra for it.

:werd:

They are two totally different cars and shouldn't be cross shopped

I've got a 2010 GT500. I bought it because it is the smoothest car I've ever driven. The 6 speed is awesome. 20+ mpg on the highway and 540 hp stock while the stereo thumps and the air blows. It is ridiculously quiet for how it performs.

Had one of my customers come in with a Z06 today and two golf sets in the back no problem.

How is it for maintenance? Had to do 'big' replacements recently or the 'usual' i.e. oil change or a timing belt after high mileage?

Oil change is pricey. 5W50 synthetic is only made by a couple manufacturers.
Other then that I am over 40,000km and it still runs like new.

Lots of newbs on that site but you can get some good info.
MRL Performance is great place to get any work done by a Ford trained tech that knows them inside out.
I know my friend has a SRT8 and he buys brakes every year.
