What's a good place for fried rice? Tried a couple places in Chinatown but it wasn't too impressive. Any recommendations?

ho wan....cheap and large portions. can be hit or miss, but when they hit it's a home run

Kinjo had the best that I've tried, so far. You have to add a liberal amount of their sweet soya sauce for it to really taste good though.

Homemade is probably the best since everyone has different tastes and preferences, pretty easy to make too, just need some left over rice, 2-3 eggs, soy sauce and whatever you like.

I hate any fried rice recipes that call for soy sauce.

I like the Big Spender's fried rice at Sun Chui Kee off their old menu, most of the staff still know the name. Their 2 Kind's of fried rice is pretty good too.

The Lotus leaf Crab fried rice at Bobby Chao's is good, but not specifically for the rice itself :)

I like Gong Kee's Special fried rice even though the place looks ghetto as hell. Don't let the deteriorating look fool you, it's delicious! :thumbsup:

That doesn't sound like best fried rice. That sounds like best sweet soya sauce.

When I eat chinese with my co-workers, some of them just drench their fried rice with tons of soy sauce. It looks incredibly salty but they still eat it all like it's fine. :nut:

WTF LOL.. Best Fried Rice?? Is OP a whitey? Next, there'll be a thread on where to find the best Chicken Balls and Beef with Broccoli.

I can't say I've ever been impressed with any kind of Chinese fried rice... The only one that's ever been able to make me really smile is the Crab Fried Rice at Pen Thai in Bothell, WA.

That's because chinese food is mediocre in Calgary in general.

Fried rice is easy to make but very difficult to master.

Similar to how lots of places can make sushi but difficult to make good sushi. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Go to a place like din tai fung and you'll see the difference. Fried rice is also a part of everyday Chinese culture. You'll find it everywhere in Asia and people make it at home. You won't find any sweet n sour pork or broccoli beef.

Really? Calgary has some of the best Chinese food(outside of China/Hong Kong obviously) I've found. Aside from Vancouver, I doubt you'll find much better Chinese food in Canada.

Yes Calgary second only to Vancouver.. Toronto.. LA.. NY, NY... I suppose thanks to out status as a preferred Asian immigrant destination, we do have it good here. On an international scale, outside of Asia, I would guess Calgary does rank up there. What we DO have though is FANTASTIC PHO!

fat kee noodle house restaurant in the north east behind the sunridge nissan used car department. they have a really good special fried rice. also the best steamed chicken in the city.

Key to making good fried rice (chow fan) is the rice must be prepped the day before and left overnight to be used the next day. Never use fresh rice.

A good traditional Chinese cuisine chef must know how to make a proper fried rice as a basic skill. Just like a western cuisine chef must know how to make a good steak/risotto, and Japanese sushi chef must know make a Tamago (egg).
