I need some new road tires and tubes. Do you guys know of any canadian retailers that offer good discounts on this stuff? I can find some pretty decent tires on nashbar.com for about 50% off msrp, but the shipping to canada costs more than the tires themselves! are there any similar sites in Canada?

Thanks!

Tubes from Bow Cycle. Axiom @ ~$6/ea. Tires hard to say, depends what you want.

I'm looking for road tires for a MTB. Something cheap as this is bike is just for hacking through urban areas. I took a look at the MEC site and found these

http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/Cycling/TiresTubesWheels/RoadTires/PRD~1807-270/tioga-city-slicker-26-x-1.5-wire-tire.jsp

which are similar to tires I wanted from nashbar (but those were less than half the price).

I'm not sure if I can find similar tires for less in Canada though.

Axiom tubes are great. +1 for Bow Cycle.

Same with tires. Go with vittoria - best bang for your buck - and all around amazing tires.

$65 for Vittoria rubino's 150 tpi
$90 for Vittoria corsa evo - open tubulars 320 tpi

... and overall amazing commuter tire (i swear by these):
$30 Vittoria rubino - 60tpi (cheap, durable and inexpensive tires) wire bead

^^are those tires available at Bow Cycle for $30, or do you get them somewhere else? thanks!

I love the tioga city slickers myself. I run 26"x1.5" on my Kona Fire Mountain commuter setup. They're cheap and I've never had a flat in ~1500km on them.

are you using Mr. Tuffy liners, or just the tires?

Also been using the City Slickers 26x1.5 and have not had a flat. I run them with Axiom tubes with no liners. Rode them on some gravel and rocks before too. Great upgrade from the MTB knobbies on the pavement.

Yea I am now leaning towards the City Slickers, or perhaps even the cheapo Duro City Cavaliers ($10/tire). http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/Cycling/TiresTubesWheels/RoadTires/PRD~5014-766/duro-city-cavalier-wire-bead-tire.jsp

I will only have a short 2-mile commute, and will probably be getting a new bike soon enough so I just need something cheap to get me by.

I think i'll try them without the liners first and see what happens, if I get a shit ton of flats i'll try the liners.

No liners - just tubes inside the tire. They seem pretty tough by themselves!

I'm running Tioga city slickers too (26x1.95). Probably close to 2000km on them.

I think they're great tires, especially for $25. I initially ran them @ 65psi as per the sidewall, but I've been running them at 100psi for a month and no issues. Definitely would buy again.

Probikekit.com - best for chains, tires, tubes, etc. Sometimes crazy tire sales (pro-race3s for 29$ etc)

Reg price:

GP4000S - 2 for 113.
Vit Corsa Evo CX clincher: 65$
Pro Race 3 - 46$

Dura-Ace 7801 chain: 59$

Latex tubes as well.

Shipping etc is incl and I've only been dinged for duty once. Never brokerage.

Can anyone recommend a good 700 x 23 tire for a road / race bike that has really good cut resistance?

I am riding down the path by the Shag golf course and it is gravel. Don't want to end up with a flat.

Try to find a tire with kevlar lining if puncture resistance is your top priority.

Race tire + Incredibly durable are two mutually exclusive terms.

Race tire: Vittoria Corsa Evo - all day long
Durable tire: Vittoria Rubino or anything specialized armadillo/conti gatorskin.

Armadillos are stronger, but gatorskins are pretty good and lighter so you don't feel like you're riding on cement (I use gators for all training rides) - have still gotten flats from a piece of a box cutter so always have a flat kit and know how to use it.

Dont need a race tire, need race tire size.

There isn't much clearance on my Madone for a larger tire like a cyclocross tire.

I am not doing training rides, just commuting DT to work and back home. I have this uber expensive Carbon bike that just sits in the garage, so I thought I would use it. My fear is that the super slick racing tires that it came with will go flat given that I have an off road section in my course.

Want something made of steel... haha

haha... fair enough. Request seemed a bit odd.

But to be honest, i ride Vittoria Rubinos on my commuter (700 x 23c) and ride off road with it and get enough traction to ride dirt trails with confidence etc..

The biggest you'll be able to go on that bike is a 700 x 25c. MAybbbeeee a 28c
So get something cheaper and durable.
If you're really concerned about flats - get the armadillo or gatorskin casing.

However, ive never commuted on a tire with an extra casing and have never had any issues with it either.

Good luck!

I use the foldable continental gatorskins on my cross bike in 700x23. Pricy, but I like them a lot. Surprisingly managed to cut my rear tire recently though after about 2500km on them. Front is still in good shape.

I got the Tioga City Slickers for $23 from MEC, put them on last night and they are great. if you get a size lower, they're even cheaper.
