View Full Version : What school board did you go to growing up?

Just curious as so which board you went to school with if you grew up doing any k-12 in Calgary; public, separate (catholic) or private.

I spent K to grade 9 in a catholic. I'd very highly recommend against it. It was probably the most fucked up thing I've ever experienced.
Teachers having affairs at school with other teachers, the principle beat a few of my classmates, it was just straight fucked. I can literally go on and on for the next hour but I wont. I found it funny my junior high religion teacher was living in his jeep for a good while since he was busted for having an affair.

For that Im public ALL the way now. Dont get me wrong Im sure Public schools have/had their issues as well, but some of the stuff that went on was brought to the attention of the Catholic school board of which routinely did absolutely nothing whatsoever. Like my science teacher who threw a desk at another kid missing her by 6", and yet they shrugged it off saying "Our teachers would NEVER do THAT!!!" and that was the end of it. No suspension, reprimand or anything for the teacher. This shit went on for years, and years.

For Highschool, I had experience in both Public (Grandin) then later to Private (Calgary Academy). For the social aspects (which are all so important in high school) I'd stick to public. It was quite a culture shock going from Grandin to CA. You go from tons of really cool kids from all walks of life to being surrounded by a bunch of spoiled little shits that have never had to fend for themselves in anyway.

Academically, the Private school cost *quite* a bit more, and had little to show for it despite of smaller class sizes. I'd just tell kids to do your best in public high school, and if there are academic problems that we'll find a good tutor to help you along.
I wouldn't wish the social pains of a private school, nor the costs involved to my worst enemy. :nut:

I went to separate from K-9 and then public for 10-12. Being forced to take religion classes in school is awful, wouldn't wish it upon any kid.

K-12 in the public system, albeit my elementary in grade 5/6 was shifting from public to a private fine arts school.

I know quite a few students who are all finishing up med school and they all went public, it's not hindering your learning by any means. I'm always kind of curious how much of a difference there would be between say a public school and say The Edge/Strathcona Tweedsmuir.

I think most interesting would be to see the percentage of students who move onto post-secondary from each high school, regardless of school board.

What did you think the bishop part was for?

Depending on the years you went there it was also the drug school of the city.

Catholic for me... Fjw, o'byrne.... Both tried out experimental learning shit ie. Computer teaching us math. Learn at your own pass social studies... Stupid ideas. I remember a severe lack of funding in junior high. Had to bring your own paper for photo copies if you lost a handout. Besides that I think everything was on par with the public system besides us having an extra class. Just as many sluts, stoners, and dropouts. Winners and losers I would say are about the same from what I can tell from the additions to my facebook that I knew from back in the day (the public vs catholic kids)

I would say when making a choice look at the actual schools you will be putting the kids into. Not the board. It seems like both sides dump all their cash into the new schools and leave the old ones to rot for a few decades before they infuse more capital into them

IMO, The catholic school board wasn't bad and provided me with great tools to succeed. The crowd I hung out with was good and usually stayed away from the 'drama' clique's.

I swear to you, one involvement with them and you'll be in next week's episode of McNally's Creek.

Catholic except for one year of HS public grade 10...grade 11 and 12 were done and O'byrne.

From experience I would say the only difference between public and catholic would be that you take the religion class a few times a week. Most people viewed it as easy credits, and if I remember correctly in the last few years you actually learn about all the different religions instead of just one.

Catholic or Public means nothing when it comes to the drama, fights, drugs, and partying.

Catholic in Medicine Hat, Grande Prairie and Calgary, Public in BC for a few years (Terrible schools there)

No difference between catholic and public high schools, other than religion class, which I didn't take anyway

I'd recommend avoiding catholic elementary schools, not really allowed to form your own opinions there.
