I thought it would be a good idea to have one mega thread for all things Hamilton. This would be a great spot for us to discuss Hamilton watches and if you have questions post away and I’ll do my best to help. I’ll also post when new models arrive in the store!

First of all, a little history of major milestones for Hamilton:
1892: The Hamilton brand is formed in Lancaster Pennsylvania
1900’s: At the turn of the century, all railroad employees were issued a Hamilton watches
1930’s: Official watch of American airlines, TWA, United and Northwest
1940’s: The beginning of the ‘Khaki’ saga. Hamilton becomes the official watch supplier of the US army
1970: Hamilton launches the PULSAR watch, the world’s first LED digital watch
2003: The production and headquarters of Hamilton watches are moved to Beil in Switzerland where all Hamilton watches are now SWISS MADE
Present: Hamilton is the leading brand for automatic watches ranging from $500-$2500

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s42/justing1018/Maestro.jpg

Being a part of the SWATCH group of companies, Hamilton uses the ultra-reliable ETA and Valjoux movements. The vast majority of Hamilton watches are automatics and almost every watch features scratch resistant sapphire crystal.

For a full history visit: http://www.hamiltonwatch.com/en/spirit-and-history/timeline

For the full collection visit: http://www.hamiltonwatch.com/
The website has a really handy ‘watch finder’ selection where you can specify case size, material, movement etc. and it will show all relevant pieces.

Please email me at [email protected] with any questions or price quotes.
I will be offering beyond.ca exclusive discounts so please feel free to email me with questions.

Thanks!
Justin

Nice!

I quite like my Hamilton Pilot, especially for the price. Picked it up when I was in Miami earlier this year.

Hamilton's are great timepieces. Here's my vintage one that I'm trying to relinquish. Debating on it now because it's clean and a great conversation piece... But, I have to make room for a Hammy I've been eying on for a while and my collection is too big:

Hamilton 1940's Endicott Watch
- Antique but serviced mechanism
- New vintage lizard strap from West Germany

value for dollar... I find their automatics very good... decent case design with good shock protection, decent grade ETA movements and saphire crystals front and on skeleton back...

IMO built as good as Oris, for quite a bit cheaper...

they have some sexy designs, and I am a fan of the jazzmasters and ventura

honestly... as well built as my tag link for fraction the price

Hamiltons have been on my radar for awhile. They have so many great designs and I personally see a lot of value in them, it's just hard choosing that first one. Some of my favorites in no order:

Pan Europ
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-imD0GHRv0pg/TV2qForlUgI/AAAAAAAACo0/RZq90WlRbzo/s1600/Hamilton_PanEurope_2236_G_HD.jpg

Railroad auto chrono

X-Mach

Pan Europ will likely be the one, but the railroad auto is damn nice too. And that maestro posted above in black is classic! Dammit!

But I love my Hamilton. Anyone who is a watch enthusiast and isnt loaded should own a Hamilton. Depending on my financial situation if I cant afford a 2-5k watch I will be picking up another Hamilton. Very nice auto movements.

This. Nice watches for the price. I wanted a nice automatic watch but didn't want to drop a few grand on one. I ended up with the Khaki field titanium and I absolutely love it. I bought mine online because I found they couldn't match the price I paid locally.

For 2012, Hamilton released two “unlimited” versions of the Pan-Europ; a black dial chronograph and a silver dial chronograph.
The Pan-Europ was originally released in 1971 as Hamilton’s first ever automatic chronograph. The re-release stays close to the original design, but with a modern look and a modern movement.
The new Pan-Europ features a 45mm polished and brushed stainless steel case, which houses the Hamilton exclusive H31 movement. Produced by ETA for Hamilton, the Valjoux 7753 based H31 movement boasts a 60 hour power reserve over the 44-48 of the standard 7753.
Like all Hamilton’s, the Pan-Europ offers great value for the money. It’s a beautifully made watch that is true to its heritage at a reasonable price.

Back in stock is the popular Khaki X-Wind
The X-Wind uses the valjoux 7750 automatic chonograph movement and features the world’s first drift-angle calculator in a watch. This allows pilots to calculate and record the crosswinds they will encounter on their planned journey.
Not the most practical function for most beyonders, but it's a seriously eye-catching watch.

Along with the chronograph function, it displays the day, the date, and has an outer rotating bezel as well as two inner rotating bezels all in a 44mm case.

Something different this week is the Hamilton Pulsomatic.
Hamilton launched the world's first digital watch, the 'Pulsar' in 1970. 40 years later, the Pulsomatic was released as an homage to the original.
The Pulsomatic houses an ETA made H1970 automatic movement to power its sapphire crystal LCD display.
When fully charged the power reserve is a whopping 120 days.

$795

50 years later, Hamilton launched the Ventura XXL as a modern tribute to the original.
This unique timepiece features an automatic movement housed in a black PVD case paired with a black rubber strap.

$1,495

Even after 5 decades the Ventura still looks futuristic in design and is an eye catcher either in its original size or its XXL version.
Both models are currently in stock and featured in the window display at Gem by Carati.

The most recent release from Hamilton is the Jazzmaster Regulator. 'Regulator' refers to watches that display hours, minutes and seconds on separate dials. The purpose of original regulator watches was to draw attention to the minute hand and ensure that the hands rarely, if ever covered each other.
The Hamilton Jazzmaster Regulator is no different, but the layout features a unique design with the hours and seconds displayed on diagonally overlapping sub-dials.

The long awaited Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic Skeleton has finally arrived!

The H-20-S automatic movement lies behind a sapphire crystal displaying a brushed skeletonized rotor, an intricate ‘H’ pattern on individual elements and showcases components such as the escapement, hairspring and barrel. Housed in a brushed and polished 40mm case, the skeleton doubles as both a sleek understated watch while being a conversation starter among fellow watch enthusiasts.

That skeleton is awesome......

Question regarding that and, watches in general. I have never had a leather strap, how do they wear? Is it advisable to buy one or two spares when you first get a watch to avoid having one wear out and the original then be unavailable?

Not sure why you want to keep the original strap but leather wears alright; unless you like the fitting tight.

Creases will appear on that notch.

It also doesn't pull out armhair at random times. :banghead:

Usually when people want to replace a strap, they don't like the original one and discard it or sell it on eBay.

Constantly changing straps is a PITA unless there's some sort of quick release built into it haha.

I don't sell nice things once I buy them so I always think long term. Like in 20 years if I give that watch to my son, I want it to have the original strap. I'm not a hoarder.....

Sorry I missed this!
Unless its a really odd strap, you'll be able to find an oem replacement years after watch itself has been discontinued.
Leather as always will show signs of wear, best ways to extend its longevity is to avoid getting the strap wet and getting a deployment clasp for it. This way you're not pulling and stretching the leather every time you put the watch on.

So this is the post that got me all riled up. I was disappointed when I heard this was a limited edition and I spent half of 2012 or so looking for a new one. It popped up here and there on eBay and when I did more research on the model, it turned out that the original Pan Europ had the legendary Caliber 11 movement that are in TAG Heuer's today

The original Cal 11 was developed by Breitling, Heuer, and others in '69 then Hamilton came into the fray in the 70's to improve it, called the Cal 11-I. I spent the other half looking for the original but nothing.

One day, I was just browsing and an original Pan Europ popped up. The listing had it listed as:

- Authentic
- Working order
- Keeps good timing
- Good condition

I bid on it on a whim and now it's with me. :)

http://i.imgur.com/GKlWHJf.jpg

Keeps time well; chronograph works well; date function doesn't so I'll have to stop by Calgary Jewellery to get it assessed and authenticated.

Also needs a new strap but I got someone for that.

Pretty much. It's a vintage watch so 'good' is subjective. I bought it for the movement mostly:

http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/Km8AAOxyNW9SLaDz/$T2eC16N,!zoE9s5nd85qBSL,DzVo+w~~60_57.JPG

If it needs an overhaul, I have to go through dispute and blah blah blah...

If it just needs minor work to get the date function working, then I'll let it slide.

It's a vintage watch from the 70s. It's not bad condition for a 40 year old watch. The crown is in the right place for a Cal 11 movement. Careful with repairs though, it gets expensive to fix if it breaks. Although there's a new Cal 11 movement (TAG) that shares the crown layout, it doesn't share parts from the original Cal 11.

Oh yeah. The TAG Cal 11 is redesigned so that's why I'm going to CJ to see what's going on inside.

The original Cal 11 movement is also in the Autavia, which I was also looking to get, but the one I want is too rich for my blood (rare as well):

If this isn't too busy, the Pilot Auto Chrono is fancy enough for workdays but can be worn with jeans and a t-shirt.

Not suit-fancy but dress-shirt, business casual:

The one watch I really wanted to get through Justin was the Ventura Chrono:

http://www.hamiltonwatch.com/collection/american-classic/ventura/chrono-quartz/h24412732

It may be too small for some wrists so you'll have to try one out for yourself. You also can't easily imagine it because the case is triangular shaped.

That's more dressy than the Pilot though.

CJ doesn't have a repair facility. All they can do is ship it off to Hamilton. I have no idea if Hamilton has a vintage department to even look at this.

I was looking into original Heuer Monacos a few years back with the same movement, and I gave up because it was a PITA to get any repair work done on such an old movement. TAG has a vintage restoration department but it's $$$, and the best repair resources was all the way in England.

Oh really? Thanks for that tip; saves me a trip. I'll go to J Vair then. Last time I checked, they do servicing.

Too bad Joe from Sears Chinook is no longer there. :(

rage2
12-19-2013, 10:31 PM
J Vair might have servicing, but they would have a really hard time sourcing any parts for a vintage Cal 11 movement. Of course, if you're lucky, you might just need a good cleanup and service to get everything going again.

If there's any repairs needed, you really need to go to a Cal 11 expert, but really, you're going to spending a LOT more money than the watch is worth. Guys like Heuerboy (who unfortunately disappeared off the internet last year) have hoarded so many parts over the years, guys like him are the only way to really get these vintage movements repaired.

Vintage watches are like vintage cars. Fucking moneypit.
