Current trimmer has died after 15+ years of use.

I'm in the search for a gas powered trimmer that is reliable, will last, and doesn't cost a fortune.

Any recommendations?

I'd go with an echo or stihl residential trimmer. It should be more than enough for what you need.

You might want to look for a 4-stroke one. No hassle with mixing gas and they don't stink.

I will also second the recommendation for Stihl. When I worked in a rental department, people abused the shit out of our stuff all day long and it never quit. Rental equipment IMO is the best indication of durability because people don't give the tiniest fuck about how they treat it.

I was in the same boat last weekend. Went there and picked up a husqvarna one instead. Reviews online were very good. Ranked one of the better all around gas trimmers.

I have a commercial gas one and a cordless Ryobi one.

I never use the gas one. Cordless ones that run off of drill batteries are perfect IMO.

I bought a Lehr propane powered one from HD 2 years ago.. Not sure I can recommend it. Although it is GREAT to use (uses those green Coleman propane canisters), the thing has been leaking oil from the onset. And now it leaks a bit in operation so when I am done, the smoke pouring out of it as the oil gets burned off from hot surfaces. Propane is great as there's no stench and it's very powerful. I'd definitely buy another propane one, just not this one...

Gas is WAY overkill for around the house.

Unless you are clearing brush or ditches, just stick with an electric.

I had a gas Stihl and honestly broke two windows because the thing would pick up the tiniest pebble when trimming next to the sidewalk and driveway.

This electric one is currently on sale for $28 @ CT: http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/product_detail.jsp?bmLocale=en&locale=en&cid=null_en&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524443316887&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474396672077&bmUID=1344550306961
I think it would do the work.

The only thing worse than using an electric trimmer is using a corded electric trimmer. Nothing worse than unwinding a hundred feet of cord.

Even a $60 weedeater is better than any electric trimmer I've used. The cordless electric ones I've used die too early.

I have the ryobi weed wacker I never had a battery run out, but worst case I have 2 batteries so I can just swap out.

100% agree on corded though. Absolutely the most annoying thing in the world.

Ya. +1 for corded being the worst fcking thing ever.
I just picked up a Stihl gas trimmer for like $179 at Arnes and I've only used it once but I love it! ...and I've only got a small yard.

The issue I had with the corded elec. trimmer I had was (a) the cord, and (b) the thing had so much damn torque it would catch on every edge and gauge out the ground and basically fck sh1t up -the wire would come out extra long then break and it was just a giant pain in the ass.

I'm pretty sure I paid right around a $100 for this POS elec. trimmer when I could have shelled out another 80 for the gas one.

My recommendation would be go with Sears, or one from Arnes, or the Alberta Forest supply company or whatever it is....somewhere that services what they sell.

I'm going with a battery pack one this summer. Gas is a PITA.

This thing is made by Yardworks. Yardworks is the worst crap on the planet. They can't even make a decent trigger nozzle sprayer. Stay away from Yardworks!

For me, a gas trimmer isn't so much of big deal because the mower is gas too. Both are four-stroke. The trimmer rarely needs filling.

Echo or Stihl. There are no others.

I have the echo 265 that I can put other attachments on. It's badass and worth the extra money spent.

I have a 24 Volt Toro rechargeable. It's the cat's ass. The fewer gas engines to maintain in my garage the better.

I bought a ryobi 4 stroke trimmer 3 years ago. Spooling device is a little finicky with the string but I think thats all of them.

the 4 stroke is awesome. No more mixing, idles quieter, lots of power to destroy everything. Started easy for me this spring, couple pulls and away she went.

Agreed with those that said for the around the house, gas is overkill, and corded is a pain in the ass.

I'd go with a high quality rechargable. Just don't go cheap on rechargables, as they have little torque to begin with, and quickly lose even that after only a few minutes.

I looked at that one, but ended up with the weedeater one. No issues on its second season. Had an electric yardworks one for a day, and that was enough of that brand for me :D

After my corded trimmer broke, I bought a Stihl and have never looked back.

Performance is similar, but the balance of the Stihl is great and I could use it with one hand vs always lifting those heavy corded/battery trimmers with all of the weight on one end.

I'd never go back after picking up our Husqvarna gas powered trimmer.
