please excuse my apparent stupidity, however, i'm perplexed by the whole insurance situation

LIABILITY ONLY

is this similar to the UKs version of 3rd Party Only cover?

IE, if i smash into someone/something...they're covered, but i get f eck all back for damage to my vehicle?

but if someone smashes into me, then its covered by their insurance rather than mine?

only ask because i've just had a quote of $980 for the year on a Honda Ridgeline with $2,000,000 liability cover...which seems really good to me, after being told by others i should expect to pay thousands for my first insurance in Canada as an immigrant

but it jumps to $4880 if i put on Comprehensive & Collision with a $1000 deductible, which is more like what i was expecting!

this is with me saying i've only held a non-learner Canadian license for <1 year and have no accidents, claims, tickets or anything like that

basically what i'm asking is....would opting for the Liability only cover be a sensible thing to do? or should i find something thats a bit cheaper to insure with comprehensive cover?

its actually one of the cheapest vehicles i've quoted on so far...a CR-V is $1200 on a liability only

thanks

Seems about right, but I would call Ray at 1UP Insurance or Bill at Touchstone and get a quote from them. Both are on here and I know Ray is awesome to deal with and have heard excellent things about Bill as well.

As for PLPD vs. full coverage, it is up to you. If you are in an accident, are you fine with paying out of pocket for all the damage to your car? Personally I would have full on anything worth more than $10k, keep in mind that if you finance or have a loan from the bank, I believe that you are required to carry full coverage.

The long and short of it is, call Ray (guessboi) or Bill (Masked Bandit) and ask them.

$980 for the year on a Honda Ridgeline with $2,000,000 liability coverage for a new driver is dirt cheap...which company quoted you that?

3rd party covers your liability - your vehicle is not covered here when you are at fault.

Comprehensive - Coverage for Fire, Theft, Hail, etc

Collision - Coverage for your own vehicle when you are at fault or hit and run...

If you are financing or leasing, it is mandatory by your lender to maintain full coverage on your vehicle.

Also if this is a newer vehicle, I wouldn't recommand going with 3rd party liability coverage only.

Being that you are from the UK we can write you using your UK driving experience ON PAR with Canadian. If you've got the right papers (we can discuss later) we can probably run the full coverage on that Ridgeline for $100 - $1300 depending on a few different factors.

FWIW, the UK is the birthplace of insurance. Most of the concepts from back home will apply over here, in Alberta anyway.

As low as $100 for Collision and Comprehensive? OP is not even 25 yet. I am guessing that is a typo. Yes UK history does count
