View Full Version : What's your acceleration style?

We should be telling this to every Asian woman in her champagne colored Camry to MOVE HER @$$ for the sake of my time and fuel economy.

Conventional wisdom says that jackrabbit starts consume more fuel. But it turns out that nursing your speed up to the limit too slowly also lowers mpg. How can that be? Cars get poorer fuel economy in lower gears, and accelerating too slowly prevents upshifting at an efficient rate. The best acceleration rate varies with the vehicle, gear ratios and weight. But in our testing we found that taking 15 seconds to accelerate to 50 mph used less fuel than taking 30 seconds to reach the same speed, because the car entered its top, fuel-saving gear sooner.

I drive at or near peak tq (330TQ) all the time, right around 1900RPM. Easy to get up to speed without holding people up, maximizing efficiency as well.

10.9 MPG on my worst tank...using all of that 322 rwtq

I never purposely accelerated to 80 km/h in 30 seconds in my entire life. That is s-l-o-w.

Well driving hand book states that you should get to speed as fast as possible in a safe manner (ie not hammering the gas)

But fuck who follows rules any more right?

I just like to enjoy my twin turby. Sometimes it's nice to chill and drive slowly, sometimes I'm hammering it for fun. Probably show as my average fuel economy in my car has been 12.05L/100km since I've owned it.

Same style roughly. I've averaged 11-12L/100 Kms in my STi that has a slight tune. No one buys a sports car for the great gas mileage

That's pretty good on the n54. My xdrive kills my mpgs. I average around 13.8L/100km.

That X5 5.0 doesn't get driven much below 18L/100km

It's just too tempting :burnout:

11.4L/100kms (21mpg) calculated using 415ft/lbs TQ a few times per day. :burnout: all city driving too. That's less than my GTI and WRXs in the past.

Depends on what I'm driving. When I had sports cars, I would generally pick up speed fairly quickly because I loved the feeling.

Now that I have a crossover, it is too heavy to have fun with so I don't even bother.

pedal to floor for 5.1 seconds with one gear change. then straight into 6th gear and coast.

I drive like Miss Daisy, just because most M3 owners drive like douches and everyone already have a bad opinion of us M3 drivers. But when I want to let loose, I use Launch Control. If you ever get a chance to experience it in a M3, Launch Control is sex on wheels :poosie:

I got passed on the Deerfoot this morning by an asian woman driving a Civic... I was already doing 120 km/h

Back on topic, I accelerate at a brisk rate most of the time if I am alone. Driving at a slow crawl just doesn't make sense.

I like to get of the line quickly and once I hit the speed limit relax and take it easy.

Before the tune and when I go into stock mode I average 7.5L/100km, more spirited in my 93 Octane program I'm still at 8.5L/100.

I'm a spirited accelerator but that's because I have no choice.

161hp in an AWD SUV? Gonna have to gun it to get up.

I drive pretty damn enthusiastically. More so on my bike since it makes next to no difference whatsoever in the fuel economy. Regardless of how I ride it, I always get 5.0L/100kms so... why not?

In the car though, Im fairly aggressive, but not overly as its almost pointless.

I don't care about fuel economy and its nice to hear the turbos spin up

Really? My 15L tank usually lasts ~190km but I've run it out in 150 and made it to 280 following some cruisers around, huge differences!

Full throttle.

How fast I accelerate depends how much I rev it out before shifting.

I'm a douche. :)

That's how I drive slow cars anyway. Anything with real power I drive responsibly ish.

I get about 250-350km's per tank in mine if I ride it normally. I dropped a few teeth at the rear to lower the RPM's at 120kph.
I can do the full Longview to highway 40 route and back on a single tank easily. Most people say you shouldn't drop teeth in the rear for the lack of Mid-range, but i've noticed no difference at all in terms of performance. It still pulls like a freight train on PCB regardless when you crank it. ;) With all that mid-range, I can afford to keep the RPM's as low as possible as often as I can.
But mind you thats on my Triumph, Jap bikes its a different ball game all together.
With them, you have to keep the RPM's in the sweet zone almost all the time, otherwise you'll find yourself dropping gears consistently just to have power for much of anything.

start out with a fancy 8K clutch dump, wheel hop like a boss, miss 2nd w/ a nice grind then proceed to bounce off the rev limiter,3rd gear syncro grind, slam on brakes down to 80....then coast right into 5th. jk.

But moderate acceleration depending on how i feel like driving. some days balls to the wall, others like a 90 year old.

I usually accelerate fast. If I keep my avg speed up past 45km/h I can get 10.5L/100KM in city driving, 10L/100Km in highway, and 8L/100km on roadtrips.

Shift gears quickly everytime I hit 3000-3500rpm

Yeah true, I guess for me that's the difference between 3-7k snooze, 7k-10k normal, 11-15k stole it!

In the civic I have people accelerating past me all the time...... so that they can sit at the next red light.

A perfect example of this is the green wave downtown ... rushing to the next red light is pointless when you already know when its going to change. I would rather do 50kph and hit all the greens fresh rather than take off like a rocket and them sit at a red.

Motorcycle - I love when people look over all concerned when I am leaving them all in the dust, but it's only 1/4 throttle - if that!

Car - 1/2 throttle, 3K RPM shifts. Get into 6th gear as fast as possible, and just cruise 10 over mostly.

I really hate when people take their sweet time - the lights are timed in a lot of locations, downtown mainly, that you end up hitting every freaking red - but they just don't think about their fuel economy when just idling. They just want to go slow.

I try to accelerate in my auto Taco the same as I would if it was a manual. I see too many people in autos flooring it then having to brake for the person in front of them.

You're right compared to other bikes, but I can baby mine and shift at 5K and still out accel most cars on the road.

It's funny when they don't stay behind you approaching a red light an decide to line up beside you... Then light goes green an eventually they signal back into the same lane behind you. lol

usually to the floor (after 1st), but i shift at usually around 2000 rpm... average 6.5l/100km usually. average 5.5l/100km on the highway.

Just out of curiosity, I timed myself. I did 3 samples and they all averaged around 13s to get to 50kph.

This is in a Civic 5spd.

I'd try the bike, but I'd guess it'd be 1.3 seconds to get to 50 kph :nut:

Sometimes you can tell they're going to do that, and I choose to be the parallel douchebag (only when there's low traffic)

I usually floor my 1st and 2nd gear then just cruise on a higher gears on my SW20. For some reason, turbo drinks fuel so bad.
