I never once ate there in my 31 years of passing by it but it was a land mark that I'm sad to see gone.

The Chief Chiniki restaurant, located west of Calgary, was consumed by a massive blaze early on Tuesday morning.

There are no clear details on what caused the fire, but it has been confirmed that the building was destroyed by the blaze.

Reports say that the fire first broke out at around 12:45 a.m.

They also say that crews from three different districts - Springbank, Cochrane, and Stoney Nakoda Nation responded to the fire.

No one is believed to have been hurt.

We'll have further details on the CTV News at Noon.

It was the one spot you could tell people you were near, in relation to the distance between heading to Banff/Calgary...

Never pulled off the highway to go in there either.

OMG!!! Same here. Every single time I drove by there. Wife and I would say..."we should go in there sometime and see what it's like".

Wow. kinda sad really. Don't know why. Just is.

So sad. I have fond memories of the place.

Really, really, really sad.

Not going to tell my wife - It would ruin her day.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it was arson. :poosie:

I went in there for coffee a few years ago. It was kind of a dump. You were still allowed to smoke inside the restaurant.

I thought that place had closed down, or was that another venue in the area?

People like Redlyne_mr2 & myself (just passing by) + Competition from the Casino up the highway = insurance fraud arson case.

You heard it here first (but I knew you were thinking the same) ;)

Never heard of this place. What's so special about it? :dunno:

Probably suffered the same fate as that native gas bar just closer to Banff.

Only they just closed that down due to lack of business, with this it was probably insurance fraud again, due to the casino taking their profits.

My parents and I stopped there for gas once when I was a kid 20 years ago. Wow I got a bad vibe from that place and never returned.

Couldn't care less that its gone now.
I liked this quote from the news page.

Why do I somehow feel that this is going to end up costing me money to rebuild?

The name is also sort of memorable compared to other restaurants that are on the TCH.

holy crap!!! I'm not surprised either though. My friend gassed up at the gas station once and said the guy came out to pump his gas with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. Friend had to ask the guy to put it out.

I spent the entire day in Morley and didn't even pay any attention to this. Nothing to miss though, the food and service were awful.

that's exactly why i'm not surprised. I had to fill up at that station once. wouldn't let me fill up. had to pre pay. I walked inside and immediately got the same atmosphere as the animal house guys going into dexter's night club. big scorch mark on the back wall. and about 10 natives (and a few kids) standing around all with burns on their face.

shady place is a understatement.

There used to be an arcade next to the gas station, a couple of kids tried to mug us for quarters, I'm still going to miss the place.

I've only been there twice. It was the red moon when the leafs were falling many many years ago and i had my first buffalo burger.

The second time i took my father it was a time when people still
respected each other and the sun was bright and we caught many fish that day.

Fk i'am going to miss that place dump or not.

Never ate there, but filled up once across the road. The natives at the teller were laughing that the liquor store across the (other) road just got robbed again. Never went back, never will.
