To sum it up quickly the kid claims he fell asleep doing 40kph and hit the van in his Corolla.

Bull. Shit.

I am thinking easily double that and probably texting or something.

He moved my heavy-ass van 4 feet into the truck behind me, then pushed BOTH vehicles another 2 feet further.

Damn. That's a fantastic van. Shame it got hit.

Now how the hell did that happen?

Edit: You ninja'd me.

How do you get THAT distracted while driving? Jesus.

Edit 2: WOW. What is in that thing? And what suspension?

wow, you got some power between the driver & pass. foot area to be sure.
That trailer isn't light by any means. Thats one of the very few vans I've seen towing trailers of that sort. Great idea, since whatever you dont want in the trailer you can toss in the van when you get there.

At Pick & pull you can grab a good bumper for it for a song & a dance. Then you'd be good to go. That Corolla? not so much.

doing THAT kind of damage at 40kph? oh, okay. Good story kid.

My parents bought the van new in '91 and it's been in the family ever since...not impressed that it got hit haha, I wanted to be the one to kill it.

It's got a 7.3L diesel in it so it tows pretty well, we have a permanent location now though so really it just gets us back and forth camping.

It'll need more than the bumper, it's got a couple of decent leaks that weren't there before and the front wheel are both cambered way out so not sure what's going on there.

EDIT- Stock suspension, the only pain with towing is bigger hills as the transmission isn't geared with towing in mind so it'll get there it just takes awhile haha.

Because it's a cheap, light, piece of crap? I was rear ended driving my old 83 Dodge 150 by a mid 90's Ford tempo going well over 60 and I was at almost a stand still. Truck was perfectly fine and all occupants fine. The car less so, it's engine was pushed back into the car almost next to the driver.

? Mid 90s Ford Tempo is not a new generation Corolla.

The corolla did an excellent job at crumpling and dissipating the force of the impact.

At the end of the day, a relatively undamaged car is no good to you if you're dead or seriously injured.

Mind you, this wasn't a life threatening accident, but the Corolla still did its job.

I think Xtrema is getting at the fact that newer cars are designed to lessen the force felt by the occupants of the vehicle in a crash by crumpling.

Man what a dumb kid. His explanation reminded me of Due Date, good thing he didn't tense up

How would he know what speed he was doing if he fell asleep at the wheel?

Update time!

The collision place called me yesterday to inform me that it's definitely being written off :( I am hoping I talk to insurance early next week to see what my options are.

Any thoughts on how to deal with this kind of situation? If the price is right I would definitely consider buying it back but their appraisal is pretty high ($2500+) so I am not sure it would even be worth it.

Likely It would resell at a salvage auction for about $300, more or less what it's worth for scrap metal. The ins co should let you buy back for around what it's worth at auction.

Yeah, it'll be sold at a place very very close to the old Budweiser brewery called "Calgary salvage & disposal". Google it

Or at Impact Auctions, a division of Adessa. They do a lot of salvage auctions for insurance.

Do you have an option to take a lesser payout and keep the van? The one time I've had to deal with insurance (knock on wood) that option was present, and we took it. It was for hail damage. As it turns out the smaller payment still covered the repairs.

Update...again.

I finally got to talk to the appraiser, the bodyshop had written it off but I guess they send someone out just to confirm that everything is correct.

He apologized, saying it took him forever to come up with an actual value due to the rarity of the van (which I figred might happen, I couldn't find much to compare it to either).

So I prepare myself for the lowball that I was about to receive when he tells me that he's forwarded everything off the the collision shop to begin repairs!

Haha apparently the van is worth a lot more than anyone thought, like 2x what I was expecting. He told me that for the year it's one of the most mint interiors he's ever seen (my dad babied that thing). That, plus the diesel package, mileage, and extended seating all added up I guess.

Pretty shocked to say the least.
