Any Beyonders ride the Edworthy parking lot hill? It's a great way to train on the bike, and if you do enough laps it will most certainly give you a good ass kicking.

There are still some people actively updating the stair climbing thread (http://forums.beyond.ca/st/242833/stair-climbing-mchugh-bluff-memorial-drive-princes-island-park/), so I thought it'd be nice to get one going for this as well.

It's approximately 1km long with a 70m elevation gain. It's my favorite hill in Calgary... not so ridiculously steep that you have to kill yourself just to move the bike, but definitely steep enough to really push you. If you do 10laps, that's 700m of elevation gain... to put that in perspective, Calgary's elevation is ~1000m.

Just like the stairs thread, post up your times and I'll periodically update this post. I like doing 10 laps at a time, but post whatever you guys feel like doing. The Edworthy hill isn't as busy as the McHugh Bluff stairs, but I see people going up the hill on their bike ride home all the time... must be a handful of Beyonders who have done it.

Edworthy parking lot hill was too easy for me at my peak. It'll prob kick my ass today, but it wouldn't take long to be able to do it. Too easy IMO.

Home road was my favorite bike hill. I used to do laps up and down home road. Even at my peak, it was tough after the 4th or 5th lap. At the beginning of the season it would take me a solid 2 or 3 weeks to get back into shape to do it once without stopping. That's a hill.

I can keep a pretty good pace going up Home Road, but haven't even come close to wanting to do multiple laps of that thing!

The thing with the Edworthy hill is that posting a fast time will still push your body pretty effing hard. I know a girl who does 10 laps in ~40-45mins... but she's a triathlete, and is ridiculously fast.

^ Home road? Oh man that must be tough. I usually go down it when I head downtown with my bike. Never even thought about going back up that way. Maaaybe I'll try one of these hills one day.

Personally I've been doing laps of Glenmore reservoir and trying to improve my times. Do it about once a week.

Where is this exactly? I can't really picture it.

The switchbacks by Stoney under the bridge beside the bow are pretty good.

Also can't remember you mentioning, but what route did you take from downtown to bragg creek?

It's on the back side of Edworthy Park on the south side of the river. The parking lot goes up the hill and ends up at Sarcee + Bow Trail.

Edworthy:

Distance: 1.1km
Avg Grade: 6.7%
Lowest Elev: 1,093m
Highest Elev: 1,163m
Elev Difference: 71m

Home Road: (19Ave going around the corner at top to 48 St)

Distance: 0.7km
Avg Grade: 6.0%
Lowest Elev: 1,065m
Highest Elev: 1,110m
Elev Difference: 45m

According to data on Strava Edworthy is steeper and longer than Home Road but they feel about the same when biking.

Yeah, the last part of that...

Here, for the Beyond OG that can't read the entire OP ;) You can use StreetView, there are actually 3 cyclists on the hill.

I live right by the Talisman Center, took Elbow Drive down to Heritage Drive, then to Heritage Park, around the reservoir and south on the Fish Creek bike path to 37th and then took 37th to Evensglen and down to 22x.

Most of home road isn't that steep. It's that final 0.1km that kicks your ass. I usually start there, as that's where bow pathway exits to and skip the non steep section.

Super_Geo

Edworthy has a more consistent grade than Home Road... and the steepest part is really from right before 20th ave to 32nd ave, ~400m:

Link: (https://maps.google.ca/maps?saddr=Home+Rd+NW&daddr=32+Ave+NW&hl=en&sll=51.079418,-114.160416&sspn=0.00552,0.013937&geocode=FeVjCwMdA_0x-Q%3BFehwCwMdw_0x-Q&mra=dme&mrsp=0&sz=17&t=m&z=17)

edit: yeah Rage got to it first... that last little bit really kicks your ass.

Yeah I just dug into the detailed data. Only about a 75m section on Home Rd (right at the bend) thats skewing the data.

I like how there are times for all these segments. I think I'm going to do some biking just to see how I compare :P

Cool I have to check those out.

Just remembered about another hilly section that is pretty tough. Checked my Strava and there are parts with 6.5% grade and one with 9.6%(-8.3%) say average of 9%...I was pretty pooped by the top! All that hilly section is right behind the golf course.

I'd do hill repeats at COP up the twisty road.
That'll get you goin. Never actually did repeats at Edworthy.

I'd join you boys, but I'd be hard pressed to find a hill where I live now :( hahaha

I ride that once a week when I go up north to visit my parents. The next leg of the ride is pretty killer, right up the ridge at Country Hill Golf Club. But, you get to the top and there are a bunch of benches and it's a great view if you want to stop and recoup.

1 hour going up and down hills, that is ambitious! Good for you. I did hill for 1 minute and I almost had enough. Will for sure do more hills in order to get endurance up though.

Hey in the winter do you guys put on knobbies/winters and ride? Do you use a trainer to ride at home? May be it's better to buy a cheaper bike and put a that on trainer than to use your regular bike? My question is would the trainer wear out the bike?

Just did 10 laps in 57:08! Had my HRM on for the first time, was surprised to see the HR range to be quite a bit lower than what I was expecting. Definitely more of a steady burn for the legs than the stairs, which is just an all out assault on the legs and as well as your cardiovascular system.

Anyway, here are my lap times (descent in parenthesis)
1) 3:54 (1:47)
2) 4:21 (1:50)
3) 4:19 (1:35)
4) 4:11 (1:45)
5) 4:13 (1:46)
6) 4:17 (1:47)
7) 4:19 (1:45)
8) 4:12 (1:44)
9) 3:59 (1:39)
10) 3:46 (no descent)

Total: 57:08.1

Link: Garmin Connect (http://connect.garmin.com/activity/216644563) (the HR goes kind of wonky at the end of the descents for some reason, not sure why, it just spikes for the first couple descents... anyone else experience this?)

Felt so good seeing the light at the end of the tunnel by lap 9 and 10 that I had some of my best lap times near the end, could've probably pushed it a bit harder in the earlier laps...

Today, I am going to take it easy on the path from dt to Edworthy and then try to hammer up the hill. See if I can do 6:48 haha.

Also, I am thinking of picking up a Garmin Edge 200. They are $119 (after $30 MIR). Don't really care about cadence and HR. Right now, my iPhone is in my jersey when I am riding, so I don't get the real time feed back for speed and time.

Any other suggestions?

Do the Garmin 500 instead...has everything you would ever want in a bike computer. I have the 800 and kind of wish i only had the 500, i don't need the map functionality.

Just joined the strava group as well. :)

Rumour is that the 500 is due to be replaced. I read it is a bit long in the tooth.

I would recommend tracking cadence, since cycling is all about balancing power and foot speed.

Before this summer I would average 65rpm usually in higher gears. Now I'm learning how to make the same power in a lower gear and average 80-90rpm. I'm learning as I go.

I don't use HR, since right on the package it says it can cause cancer haha :nut: I'll use it now and then, but definitely not everyday.

Where exactly are you turning around at the bottom? The fence/where it opens into the parking lot? I assume the top where it forks to the right to go up signal?

on the map, it looks like just before the pavement ends. No parking sign.

right about here:

Friend sent me this to help with my climbing and it pointed out some mistakes I was making.

went 25 seconds faster and dropped 1 position to 204 / 209. How does that make sense? haha

6:24. Updated the first post.

Went on a casual ride today and already feeling way stronger on the hills I usually go on. Rode up Home Road in 3rd gear and seated the whole time... definitely a first for me! Going to run the stairs tomorrow and then try to post a sub-55 next week. My goal is to break 50-mins before winter hits.

I rode on Sat morning and did a 5:35 the first lap, but the second lap, I was back down to 6:40.

I was up early enough to do some repeats this morning, but after the first one my throat was aggravated by the cold air. Only managed to do one climb @ 4:05.

Definitely not T-Shirt weather any more.

Actually did a repeat today!
Lap 1: 4:16
Lap 2: 5:24 :(

One day I want to do this without a backpack.

5 year old thread revival!

There's a strava segment of "Edworthy 10x" now. Lilmira - I challenge you!

nice, have to give this a try now.. curious to see how i fare against others. i can probably do only 2 laps right now, max 4.

on a totally unrelated note, due to a bug apparently I'm the KOM for this segment.

I love Edworthy. I got annoyed by dodging around people and stopped going there. May be I'll go do it in the morning some day. Is there any landmark to turn around?

The segment starts at transition from gravel to pavement at the bottom. At the top I turn around immediately after the gate.

Hard to start at the transition. Someone needs to create a new segment that starts and ends on pavement.

It will count the segment if you turn around right at the very last bit of pavement so you don't actually have to get onto the gravel. The "Edworthy" Strava segment starts at the bottom of the gravel lot and doesn't make sense to do repeats on. There is also "Edworthy Hill from Sign to Sign" which is the start of pavement to the sign at the top (not the gate) when you turn right at the Y-intersection. (https://www.strava.com/segments/1365690).

I should mention - if you're going to try this beware of cars and don't turn around before the gate at the top as GPS inaccuracy might not count the full segment.

I ride edworthy up to coach hill everyday. I see ppl doing intervals all the time.

Anybody ride edworthy in the winter? I want to ride all winter but that road is steep, no lights and has some rough patches.

Debating if going along spruce drive to bow trail by Westbrook mall might be a better route.

Edworthy gets a lot of ice in winter I think, even with the gravel they put down. I've ridden it early spring and there is a ton of water run of in addition to the gravel. Spruce drive would be a better option as it's a designated bike route and should get cleared frequently.

I ride Edworthy in the winter. As long as you don't ride your brakes going down there when it's icy it really isn't too bad, I did switch to commuting with studded tires though and that's made it even better. It also doesn't get icy until closer to spring because of the freeze/thaw cycles.

I've ridden up it many times in the winter. Going down can be super sketch.

For getting to the river path, I always go down the path by the golf course.

The snow gets thick there and going up is near impossible some days and I head over to the edworthy road.
