Well folks, im spreading the word of the JZ and doing another swap. This is for a beyond member, who im sure will chime in eventually. Figured i would post pics as we go, and kinda give people an idea whats involved in these swaps. This particular swap will be a 1jzgte vvti, from a JDM jzx100 chaser.

So on with the starter pictures

Engine bay before removal of sr20. This sr20 was already making around 320 whp, and she was pretty potent....

Engine out, and on the floor. Damn im good.

Clean slate....ahem...pressurewasher soon...

I pick up the vvti engine next week, so i will post details as the install progresses. Thanks for looking !!!!

Evan, do they make a swap kit for an s13 with a 2j and v160? Or even a 2j with a t56? I can't seem to find a straight answer anywhere.

gretz
09-03-2012, 09:33 AM
I'm pretty sure they do... tranny tunnel clearancing and an adapter plate are needed...

sr20s14zenki
09-03-2012, 09:42 AM
Gotta pound out tranny tunnel. V160 mounts to 2jz out of the box as it was intended for that. You would need to mod the cross member for v160 vs r154 which wouldn't be all that bad. Maybe the v160 will fit without banging. The r154 is practically swimming in all the room it has in the s14

Honestly the talk of the r154 shifting shitty imo is bull. I like it just fine. Just use it.

Yep.

Was just letting Kino know that there is really no reason to use the v160....unless hes planning on making over 700 whp haha. In that case, use a turbo 350 LOL.

Well I know the v160 bolts up to the 2j, just wanted to know if they made direct bolt in kits for it in an s13 or if would even fit in the tunnel. I also want to know if anyone has used a viper spec t56 with a 2j. If I go through with the swap I don't want an r154 because I have seen what happens trying to bang gears in a 480hp supra with it.

could check that out (=.

v160 i bet would fit the tunnel. That would be much more simple. By this picture, it appears that yes the v160 is larger in diameter, but not leaps and bounds. Mostly longer. Like i said, the r154 allows quite a bit of room in my s14. I can drop it out easier than i can an sr20 tranny...must be the placement of the engine, or the shape of the bell housing.

heres the comparison of v160 and r154

Engine arrived, spent some time simplifying/eliminating useless crap. Got rid of automatic tranny, and ac pump. Next need to deloom harness and pull crap out of it, re-rout e some wires, and run a sub harness for the use of factory relays in the s13 wiring. Should be FUN FUN FUN!!!

Side note, im so glad to be working on my own again....its so much more zen.

Yep, have all the pinouts. Just need to find some missing connectors. It appears on the jzx100, the jerks in japan unplug the body harness from the ecu rather than cut it so i can use it. Apparently the connectors were used on a few different cars, including hondas, camrys, etc. The hunt is ON!! Starting with PNP.

1j!! 1j???!!!

Pansy. A stock 2j is lethargic enough, now a stock 1j!!

Hey, I have a nice boat anchor for ya. It'll be faster.....down a cliff.

Just buggin, looking good. Just stock ecu for now?

sr20s14zenki

The vvt 1j is rated at 280 hp and 280 tq. And apparently good for a lot more. I didn't realize how closely rated to the 2j they are. Yea stock ecu. Boss is too cheap for a haltech :). har har har.

gretz
09-06-2012, 04:22 PM
Oh shit lol, already getting flack lol... Staying with the stock ecu to start

2J toma? peak torque at 4000 rpm or 2500rpm, which would you go with lol...

should be a fun, responsive motor as it sits > 300whp on stock ecu, fuel, turbo is attainable at 14lbs > should keep me happy for a bit (until she gets an s300)

The 1j with vvti, is a not bad engine at all. I say a good contender to the 2j at stock form. The early spool at lower rpm makes it very responsive. Has power/torque/response at all speed and rpm range.

I’ll be keeping up with this build.

Holy shit connectors... Took some serious digging but we got em ordered...

These motors don't typically come with the connectors posted above and nowhere online has specific info on where / how to get them in Canada. Dealerships requested I by a harness at $3000 to get the connector, great advice there > other told me I had to source the part number for the connector I don't have, apparently they cant look up year/make/model specific parts... more great advice there...

For everyones future reference with vvti swaps, part numbers 90980-11219 and 90980-11218 are the connectors needed...

Needed Parts update for now:
ka24 aluminum rad
S13 exhaust

If anyone has anything kicking around, shoot me a pm

Update,

Did a test fit of the mounts, as well as to see if there would be any interference issues. The only issue is the sway bar (as i had figured)

suprisingly with such a big engine, still lots of room in there. May even be able to fit some real fans....

Took some time today to do the fuel lines, set up the clutch and flywheel, mount the transmission, and drop it all in for mock up. Once i replace the absolutely totalled tranny mount, im sure everything will be more straight.

Compression fittings, lines bent to suit curvature of car:

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t320/ca18det240sx/20121007_171157.jpg

Lines tucked neatly under pinch seam:

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t320/ca18det240sx/20121007_171212.jpg

Even relocated the filter mount, stock filter for mock up, z32 filter will be there:

Depends on what rules??

NHRA you cant run brake lines across the firewall unless they are enclosed, but they accept the factory double lip fold thing that the brake lines sit above. Not sure if same rule as fuel???

Not sure about fuel lines. It does say no fuel distribution block within 6" of firewall. :dunno:

sr20s14zenki
10-09-2012, 05:51 PM
Hah, id like to let them even try and find the fuel lines after i cover them with everything (=

I believe that they are in a safer place than my car, so we shall see what happens. In the event of an accident, the engine is less likely to hit them where they are, and that was kind of my intention, since this is a street car.

thanks for the heads up tho.

if shit comes to shit, i will just run new lines front to back, i got pretty good with that bending tool :burnout:

Got some boots that fit PERFECT for this application. Unfortunately they don't sit QUITE how i wanted, but pretty decent once we machine plates and spacers to hold the coilpacks steady. Also painted the engine cover. YUCK to that nasty blue/aqua crap that was on there.

This is how i WANTED them to sit. unfortunately, the coil covers the mounting hole i wanted to use, so they have to face eachother, as they do in the following picture =(

heres a blurb

The third generation of the 1JZ-GTE was introduced around 1996, still as a 2.5-litre turbo, but with Toyota's BEAMS architecture.[2] This included a reworked head, newly developed continuously variable valve timing mechanism (VVT-i), modified water jackets for improved cylinder cooling and newly developed shims with a titanium nitride coating for reduced cam friction.[3] The turbo setup changed from parallel twin turbo (CT12x2) to a single turbo (CT 15B). The adoption of VVT-i and the improved cylinder cooling allowed the compression ratio to be increased from 8.5:1 to 9.0:1. Even though the official power figures remained at 280 metric horsepower (210 kW) at 6200 rpm, torque was increased by 20Nm to 379 newton metres (280 lbf·ft) at 2400 rpm. These improvements resulted in increased engine efficiency that reduced fuel consumption by 10%. The adoption of a much higher efficiency single turbocharger than the twins as well as different manifold and exhaust ports were responsible for most of the 50% torque increase at low engine speeds . This engine was used primarily in Toyota's X chassis cars (Chaser, Mark II, Cresta, Verossa), the Crown Athlete V (JZS170) and in the later JZZ30 Soarer, as the JZA70 Supra was long discontinued by this time.

Yes, great success...

Big thanks to Evan and his expertise, this man knows his toys lol... Smooth swap start to finish, no cut corners, and great results

Although power figures don't seem too high to most, its where it makes the power that makes it sooooo awesome... 3rd gear @ 3000rpm will break the 235 Nitto Invo's loose with 1/4 throttle > so smooth and consistent power makes for a awesome street car.

I'll have to get the sheets posted, car made 160wtq more than my sr setup at 3000rpm and holds over 280wtq to redline > sooooo much area under the curve, and only 10lbs of boost

Thanks again fugger, goes back on the dyno for more vvti tweaking in the future (and maybe a top mount . cough) but for now, its an awesome setup

at 2500 in 5th gear, if you mash it, youll have full 10lbs by 2800. This should improve once the vvt-i works properly too. Need to speak to haltech regarding settings for it.

Talked to haltech usa and they said if desired cam angle matches actual cam angle in logs that everything is working correctly. He figured with how small and responsive the stock turbo is....that is why the power difference was so small with cam angle changes.

Maybe that makes sense especially if the turbine housing is creating decent back pressure and the turbo is hitting its max rpm. Ive had a hectic week but ill verify with haltech australia as they seem more experienced.

Love the curve vs the SR20.

Thought I'd bump this up, Not even 500kms on it and the turbo is whining, scraping, and has about 1/4" of shaft play... On the dyno we knew it wouldn't last long, unfortunately that was the case...

These turbos are hard to come by, in good shape none the less, if anyone has...

-Tial or other EWG
-Garrett, BW, Holset, etc... turbo
-shot in the dark > 1jz vvti manifold

you are looking to part with, let me know

How about a Tomei Arms bolt on?

I might also have a stock 1JZ VVTi turbo for sale. Send me a text

Well, after much self-debating, I am going to be rolling with the Tomei setup... Not only will it get me to my power goals (around 380-400whp), it will lose none of the response I love so much lol...

We will see if the turbo is as good as advertised, hell, if they just came out with a new turbo line for a 15 year old motor, it has to be decent... stay tuned for dyno results down the road...

Well, after more self debating and research, I don't want to run 25lbs of boost to make 380-400whp lol... That is what the Tomei needs to boost to make that power, no thankyou lol...

Top mount would cost anywhere from $900-$2000 just for the manifold, and only 2 places make them (6 boost and suprastore)... I don't believe fullrace even makes one for this motor. This left me no choice... I'm machining my own lol, Yes, machining.

The design is done, stock is cut, should have the T4 and Head flange done today... It outflows the stock manifold by about 40%+ (CFD) and will be pretty awesome when all is said and done...

I'm hoping to have it done in the next few weeks, only 2 more parts left to machine and some welding... 1-off manifold FTW

pretty interesting! the entire thing will be machined similar to a hpf e46 manifold? sort of a log-style thats created in sections and then welded together?

gretz

Essentially... Not a log style, also no tubes, but a tubular manifold... nice swept ports > it should be interesting

I found a place that did manifolds like that a couple years ago.

http://steedspeed.com/

They're in BC now but I think they used to be in strathmore.

Its a go... design is re-finalized for fitment "issues"...

Should have it done this week / early next week (if all goes well)

Here is a teaser rendering

Yes, solidworks... thrown into Mastercam, hacked up by a Hurco/DMG...

Flange is done... All ports and holes are spot on, just have to doublecheck that it accepts all of the studs and i'll be trying to get the rest ready for welding on Saturday...

Very excite

git er done

gretz

lol... just 3 more parts (the T4 flange will take 10 minutes), so, basically 2 parts left.

I'm going to do some mild CNC porting after it is welded and decked (planed) to open them up to gasket size in case something gets gasket matched in the future...

What studs should I throw in that T4? I'm unsure what is common > M10, M12? Grade 8, 10?

Started out with about 60lbs of QT100, down to 44lbs, finished weight should be around 18-20lbs, and likely the strongest part on my car lol

lots of machining to go lol, looking to get it TiLn coated by one of my tool reps, should be something else

Thanks dude...

here is an idea of how much material needs to come off (outer profile shaping)...

It needs the thickness to account for where it bellmouths out for the T4 flange, as well as the angled boss that the wastegate is on... The ports will have 3/16" wall when it is done for reference

That's fucking cool man. I know it's a "rough cut" right now but it still looks great. Can't wait to see the finished product.

You should start cranking out CNC manifolds. :D
