Hey myslef and few friends are heading down to San Fran soon and was wondering what beyonders recommend one should do while out there (recommended restaurants, pubs, clubs, attractions)? Were heading down for 4 days and were gonna check out an NFL game, mbe Alcatraz, check out some night clubs.

Also what would you recommend for traveling while down there (rent a car, public transit, taxi)

I'm a huge fan of Sushi Ran, one of the best sushi joints I've ever been to anywhere. It's right across the golden gate bridge in Sausalito.

Purchase your alcatraz tix ahead of time. We thought it wouldn't be that busy and could get them the day we went, but they sell out at least a week ahead of time.

I had a coworker just come back and she was told 2-3 weeks minimum for tickets to Alcatraz.

Also, depending on where you're staying you can probably get by without a rental car. We stayed in Union Square for 5 days and didn't need a car at all.

I would recommend renting a car especially if you're not just sticking around San Francisco city itself. Full week rentals can usually be quite cheap and pretty convenient at the air port. Always check full week pricing, even if you're not there for the full week, just return it early. BART won't really get you to places of interest, at best you can get off at Market Street. Unless you like lots of transit transfers, go with the car.

Not exactly San Francisco, but Morimoto and French Laundry for restaurants.

Go to Chinatown, ask for Caine, he will help you.

Car rental is redicular cheap. A fullsize car is $140/wk+tax.
Be sure to head up to Twin Peaks Blvd...nice ariel view of SF.
Also, Full House townhouses = Alamo Square.

Renting a car is cheap but parking it costs a fortune. :dunno:

If you are staying around Union square, forget the car rental because the price of parking at the hotel will offset at savings. I believe at the Hilton it was $30+ per day.

Just go to any local tour place. They'll have Alcatraz tickets for the day you want to go.

This.

You can at least burn 4-5 days without a car. BART is quite efficient.

You only need one if you want to venture out.

I got the City Pass for $69, this gives you access to public transport + cable car (cable car ride is $6 one way) plus you get passes to 5 attractions. http://www.citypass.com/san-francisco

Did 4 out of 5 of the attractions, well worth it, if not planning on attractions its $27 for the Muni pass. I used the F-Train all the time, cable car lineups are long and bums hassling you for money.

I did the Segway tour http://www.electrictourcompany.com/ Really awesome!

Do they allow Segway everywhere or to just certain paths?

I remember they had a ban in 01/02 for those electric scooters. There was no stopping those things coming down steep hills.

You'll need a car for this. I try to pay a visit everytime I'm there as the cars keep changing. About an hour away at speed limit.

Not too sure, We did our tour in Golden Gate Park, did see a tour in Fishermans Wharf. Did see one guy using them on the hills, I think he was one of the guides off duty though.
