View Full Version : Almost got ripped off by Meloche-Monnex

Meloche-Monnex is an insurance division of Toronto Dominion and have been awesome to me for the last 7 years. My insurance is usually around $120 a month and I just noticed it was $170 a month so I called them up to ask why, that's a $600 a year jump.

me - Why is it so high?
her - I see claims in 2011 and 2012
me - They weren't my fault.
her - Let me check
- hold -
her- Weird, the case from 2011 said it was still open but when I went into it, it was closed and deemed not your fault. So I closed it manually and readjusted your policy, you should get a $450 credit on your account.
me - And the 2012 claim?
her - That is open so once it's closed, they'll readjust your payments again.

So for anyone noticing a jump in their pricing, make sure it isn't some weird glitch about the file showing as open when it should be closed or whatever happened to me there. Looks like they hike your prices while the case is open and refund you once it's closed, never heard of that before.

So how are they trying to rip you off? You had prior claims which wasnt closed by someone on their end (clerical error) and then when you noticed they closed and are giving you a credit.

If he wouldn't have called he would have been giving them extra money for no reason :dunno:

When I had my renewal in the spring, they bumped my rates up to about $1400iirc from around $900 which the website also said but on the phone they couldn't do that. They had me down as 24 years old though so my magic discount of actually being 25....................$2/year
Switched to touchstone after that

Yup. Rule #1 that I've learned, called Darren Roy. He works magic.

My brother has an atrocious record. He found a way to get my brother in a car with something that wasn't absurd.

I love my insurance rates too =)

"Ripped off" implies intent. He wasn't ripped off, they just made a mistake.

Maybe.

Ya give Masked Bandit a shout. He's really knowledgable and has tons of great advice.

I keep meaning to follow up with him after my premiums went from $420/yr to $2700/yr.

So you have two not-at-fault claims and TD thinks it's a good idea to rate you (charge you) for each of them until they are closed? That's horseshit! The underwriters know pretty much right away if it's going to fall as at-fault or not-at-fault and rate your next renewal accordingly even if the claim isn't closed yet. Good on you for catching the first one but I would call back and tell them to take the 2012 one off if you were not at fault.

What were the circumstances of the accident? Did you hit someone? Did they hit you?

Which one? I said an accident but I get hit like once a month.

1. Stopped on the road minding my own business, got rear ended by a city bus.
2. Stopped on the road minding my own business, got rear ended by a punk kid.
3. Driving down the road in the right lane and some retarded kid in a huge truck in the left lane cuts across my lane to get into a parking lot. Smashy.
4. I got a rental for number 3, stopped at a light and got rear ended in the rental after being sat there stationary for about 20 seconds. Then got a rental for the rental. These 2 were the 2011 claims.
5. Driving downtown in rush hour in an open right lane and the 3 lanes to my left were all bumper to bumper one way. Some retard from Winnipeg cuts out of an alley, across all 3 lanes and rips right across my lane right in front of me to get to the other alley to my right.. Smashy. This was the 2012 claim.

There are way more, Contemporary Coachworks knows me by name, I was just there again yesterday. I've never had an at fault accident, it's weird how they can even still be reviewing the 2012 claim if I'm driving down the road and the guy hits me broadside while travelling west bound on a road that only goes north-south, completely perpendicular to traffic.

This thread isn't a complaint, it's a tip for people to just check their payments, that's all. Take a look, make sure you're not getting screwed.

They raised my premium ~100 a year on each car so I phoned them.

"Yeah we are switching our rating system (or whatnot), let me look into your file. Hmm I see you have a newer secondary driver in your policy, it'll be cheaper once she has more experience"

WTH, she isn't getting any newer with time, why was it cheaper when she was even newer before?

Hmmm. They always seem to lower my rates. Down to $1100!

Can't wait for the 25 years old discount.

I wouldn't get so excited. If you saw my post on the first page, I only save $2 per year.

And no Mar you cannot borrow my car. You should go as a crash test dummy for Halloween.

I'm pretty sure someone called my insurance company and forwarded them some of my posts on Beyond and tried to ruin my life. And you know what? It was you!

Dude I hope you have a dash cam. With this many collisions you KNOW eventually someone is going to try to claim they were not at fault.
