I don't know why, but having a hell of a time trying to pinpoint this location. I get: 450 34.0146 N (?) by 640 43.2145 (?) But can't seem to get a location in Google.
Anyone want a crack at it?

Try 45 34.0146 N 84 43.2145 W (http://goo.gl/maps/1rqhA)

Don't think the point I provided above was quite correct - problem is that the numbers on the plate in the OP's post are a bit difficult to discern - the location I provided above is in Michigan, but it would appear there's a marina or something in the background which doesn't match-up with the location I provided.

If you walk around calgary, you will notice bronze pins embedded sidewalks (usually at intersections), they're used as similar reference points by surveyors. There's loads of them around downtown.

That's the difficulty I'm having. Are those first two numbers "450" and "640"? Or are they "45" and "64". I tried "64" instead of your "84" and wound up in the Bay of Fundy somewhere. The location is somewhere in the "UP" in Michigan....I think somewhere around here (http://goo.gl/maps/DT2CX) But I can't pinpoint it exactly.

Those are definitely "D's" after the first numbers of each northing & easting value, signifying "degrees." The subsequent numbers are definitely "minutes" with a decimal equivalent of "seconds." Even if one could read the numbers correctly, there's a possibility somebody mis-converted the decimal to be a fraction of 100 rather than over 60 (or vice-versa).

I think that's the spot. Weird how Google marks those gps coordinates as a lot further south, down by Douglass Lake....
Hmm.

Really odd as that spot is listed as...

45.866887, -84.720061‎
+45° 52' 0.79", -84° 43' 12.22"

Can be found by right clicking in the center of the map and selecting "What's here?" Once the green arrow shows up, then hold the "shift" key/bar down and left click the green arrow.

The marker the OP had in his picture must be elsewhere or it has the wrong info on it.

OP's picture also has no GPS info in the EXIF data.

I can't see the marker having the wrong info...and the post itself IS right by that little Marina. I asked the guy that actually took the picture. Don't know if Google's co ordinates are off...or a different map datum? Dunno.

No, it was taken with a DSLR (NikonD5100) and doesn't record gps coordinates.

So now that someone found it. WTF is it?

Nothin.. :dunno: Just a picture a buddy of mine posted about his vacation. I was curious where exactly it was, and tried finding it on Google maps...but ran into difficulty. First, trying to read the numbers correctly and then how to actually punch in the coordinate numbers for Google to read it. It was bugging me. :D

It's a Firefox add-on. once installed you just right-click on any photo and grab the exif data.

Or http://exifdata.com/ - that works well for any browser.

NERD ALERT!
45.866887 is in decimal degrees. To convert to DDD-MM-SS you have to do the following:

You already have the degrees value, 45

To get minutes you multiply the decimal value (of the degrees) by 60 (60 minutes in a degree): 0.866887*60=52.01322 , 52 minutes

To get seconds its the same as getting minutes: 0.01322*60=0.79 seconds

So the final value is 45-52-0.79
