3.0L I6 Turbo. Isn't that pretty much a 335i? WTF?

http://www.gtspirit.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/BMW-M3-V6-Engine1.jpg

Rumors have been floating around concerning the engine for the next generation BMW M3 with predictions arguing that it will be a Turbo V6, Turbo inline-6, straight-6 with three turbochargers or a Supercharged V6. Well, a new set of photos have emerged that put an end to all these rumors. The photos show the engine bay of the 2014 BMW M3 and experts have come to a final conclusion.

Apparently BMW will be reducing the number of cylinders in the new M3, from the current naturally aspirated 4.0 liter V8 to a 3.0 liter inline six engine that will deliver about 450hp. Mated to this will be a seven-speed DCT and six-speed manual transmission. There are two pipes feeding the intercooler hence suggesting this could be a twin turbo engine. This setup appears to have a water-to-air intercooler similar to BMW’s larger-displacement twin-turbo V8s, the current N55 turbo I6 uses an air-to-air intercooler.

It’s most likely that the M3 had to take fuel mileage into consideration and returned to a smaller-displacement engine but from these new features we sure know BMW intends to make sure that smaller doesn’t mean slower. The engine also comes with strengthened aluminum block and a heavily modified cylinder head.

Maybe they were using the 335's of this generation as a test mule for a high performance model for the next generation.

Reduce displacement, get boosts seems to be the way to go these days.

It almost sounds like the 335is engine beefed up with a tune?

I was expecting a larger than 3.0L V6 with the TT setup. I am curious what the boost is set at to get 450 and how much more room is available above that without compromising durability.

That engine looks like a joy to work on
Cheeky title there though rage2

Other rumors/reports are still saying it'll be tri-turbo, one of which will be an electric turbocharger.

the current 335 only runs 8psi to get 300-320 hp. To get to 450, you really only need to run 15-18psi which the 335 does at high altitude (12 psi) to make 300 hp in Calgary.

What will be interesting is whether there will be turbo lag. To run 15 Psi at sea level will require bigger turbos than what the 335 is running now. I remember my 335 being laggy before they relflashed it.

The M3 is know for throttle response. Maybe that is what the 3rd electric turbo is for.

That was way back though was it not. The latest pics and videos are very recent so it would seem that this is the engine that will be in the M3/M4.

If it's a M335i its supposed to be the model between the 335i and M3 from
BMWs new model nomenclature.

I love the air/water intercooler.. wonder if I can retrofit.

The n54 is a kick ass engine, if it's ain't broke don't fix it. A v6 in an M3 would have just been weird.

I knew there was more for that engine to give, people are easily getting 100hp more out of the N54 (I think the N55 has more to give than the N54, just harder to tune). Plus they limited the 1M coupe just so it wouldn't beat the current M3... which it pretty much does anyway, lol. It only makes sense they would unleash its full fury with the M3.

IMO the M3 should still have a V8, the next 1M should this engine. BMW needs to stop trying to tier these cars in terms of performance and just make them appeal to different people instead. M3 should be more powerful and solid performing sedan.... the 1M should be lightened up and marketed as more of a sports coupe.

There are many N54's running over 500 wheel horse power. It is a very capable engine. The M3 needed more torque, as for turbo lag I would say there is almost none in my 335is ( N54 ). Most tuners for the N54 have had to dial back torque because the transmission is unable to handle the power so hopefully the M3 gets a beefier tranny. Either way I am sure it will be a great car.

Considering the new 2.0L AMG motor is supposed to put out 380hp (and there is no way they will sell it if it has "lag") 450hp for a 3.0TT should be a joke. Guys are running that on 10 year old 2.7TT Audi motors.

With JB4 program on 91 with only intakes the 3.0TT puts down 371RWHP - so its going to be over 400HP at the crank. With upgraded turbo kit they PROcede tune is running over 600RWHP.

Pretty cool, but I think Rage2 is right that it is just a modded 335i w/turbo package.
