Update through iTunes on your computer or direct from your phone (warning very large file) Settings > General > Software Update

780mb took less than a minute on my home computer.

Wow thats fast, I remember it took forever with iOS5, guess it may get busy tonight.

From the start of the download to using my iPhone again it took 20 minutes on the home computer. Add another 15 minutes for passwords for iTunes, new settings to be looked over, etc and all the app updates and it might be 45 minutes in total.

There is also an OSX update. Restart needed.

It just depends on what phone to have. The 3GS version is smaller than the 4 which is smaller than the 4S etc... the iPad ones are pretty big too, 1.1GB or more if you have a 3G version.

Guess it relies on crowd sourced data from other ios6 users... hopefully they'll end up with same or better traffic coverage.

I imagine the traffic data will eventually be better than Google Maps since iphones are everywhere. Good news for users of Google Maps is that they weren't crowd sourcing traffic data from iphone users (Apple wouldn't let them?) so traffic data will be unaffected.

Anyone getting the iOS6 wifi issue? Everything was working up to about an hour ago, now when it connects to wifi, it does a login page, which redirects to apple.com saying page not found.

Looks like someone nuked the "internet checker" page on apple's site, so it thinks there's no internet and need a login (ie at Hotels, etc).

iOS5 devices are fine.

The stations are there, tap the map to zoom in. Or in the search bar type "london train stations". Although one has to expect a dedicated app to be better overall.

There are some but not all. My station is completely missing. A dedicated app is better for routing and lines but not for when I'm trying to find a nearby station. The old maps had distinct symbols for tube, rail, overground, tram, etc.
Anyways, how do you use passbook? The app gives a link to the App Store. I get the "cannot connect to iTunes Store" after clicking.

Looks like it. It's Apple's way of testing to see if you're on the internet after connecting, or if it's going to redirect you to an access point login page, ie at Hotels, public spots that require sign-in, etc. My guess was iOS6 introduced this new way to figure out more accurately if you're online, and something broke on it for 40 mins.

iOS5 devices didn't have this problem.

This page is used to check for wifi internet connectivity:
http://www.apple.com/library/test/success.html

The page was inaccessible for awhile and apparently IOS5 and 6 use that page to check. They could probably change the code so that it stays connected to the wifi access point (even if there appears to be no internet connectivity).

I'm happy with it. It's pulling up my camera, messages, emails and photos without any lag compared to iOS5 on an iPhone 4. That's where I mostly spend my time on my phone.

I guess Google has a Maps app waiting for approval in the App Store. So the ball is in Apple's court.

Android users are definitely smirking over the whole ordeal though. Apple has really shot themselves in the foot by trying to take on the rest of the smartphone industry. As it stands it looks like they might be in hot water over LTE patents. I can't imagine how they're going to dig themselves out of the hole once LTEA comes around and nobody is willing to license the technology to them.

Pretty sure that the patent holders would be in some hot water if they sold licensing to some but not others. I think it goes against the whole competition thing. Not really sure, but that's my understanding of it.

You're talking about "standard-essential patents." They are fairly rare and are basically your no-frill patents that get you bare metal functionality at best.

As an example of what's not a standard-essential patent, motorolla is suing apple over "location reminders, e-mail notifications, video players," all of which are covered in non-essential patents. Obviously in the smartphone world there is a lot of "standard functionality" that is not covered in the standard-essential patents.

And also as a note, the patent holders ARE the competition. So there's really not a lot of desire for them to cooperate, especially after apple has pretty much burned every bridge in the smartphone industry.

It's my understanding (I only have an Ipad 3 still running iOS 5) that you can pin maps.google.com to your front screen on iOS 6 - a pain in the ass until Google releases an actual app, but gives you all the details and usefulness of Google Maps while Apple fixes the folly of iOS 6 maps.

Contacts should be saved to cloud or gmail if that's what you use.

When it comes to apps just resync them. When it comes to games progression however I think that might get lost.

This

I read about this a while back on my 3GS how ppl reported better battery life when they set it up as new and I tried it and it actually did make a difference. As to why or how, no clue... :nut:

Btw even if u have jail broken in the past it should have zero affect once u wipe and reinstall any iOS and setup as new phone...it's not like jail breaking changes anything hardware wise. The software unlock from way back would alter the baseband I guess but that doesn't work anymore so no one would be doing that anyways.

I was thinking about updating to ios 6 and see how it is for myself and if it sucks then just downgrade to 5.1.1 again but after reading abt the apple maps fail I decided against it.

I might've mentioned this before somewhere, but I've noticed once every month or 2, the iPhone goes into slow/super battery drain mode, where you can sit at dinner and literally watch battery life drop by 20%. Rebooting it doesn't do anything, battery drain continues. Usually lasts a solid 12+ hours.

I suspect that iOS does internal cleanup or some sort of maintenance task once in a while which shows up as WTF is wrong with my phone for a night. I've had this happen since the 3G, so it's been an issue for a long time. Wonder if that's what happened to you...

My 4S has never run worse. It is about 6 months old and it has never been jailbroken.

My biggest thing is actually the bug with Exchange/ActiveSync. I don't really care much about the maps, but the battery drain is just brutal now! I probably only have 6 or 7 apps, and the only one I leave running is mail.

I have disabled Siri and almost all location services, but my phone is almost dead everyday when I get home. When I was on iOS5, I would easily have 60+% left.

Try a restore. Sometimes the iOS installs don't go we'll in the beginning when apple is getting hammered with update traffic.

I kind of liked the clock from ios 6 for my ipad, as I played with it briefly before getting my ipad replaced due to badly cracked screen.

Is it possible for me to install the native clock app from 6 and put it on to 5.1.1?

They better fix this fast!
