Anyone ever done this?

I'm looking at picking up a 2006 Porsche Cayman S from a family member who lives in Playa Del Carmen.

Anyone know what I would need to do in order to fly down and drive the car back to Canada legally without running into any problems at the Mexico/US Border or Canada/US border.

The car is currently registered in Playa and has no liens or accident history.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I looked into it last year, as I wanted to import a Mitsu L200 Triton. I found that with everything it seemed the easiest way was to import it to the US, then register it in the US, then import it to Canada.

There didn't seem to be any issues, in talking with all the different border agency's and such all that they require is a letter from the manufacturer saying that it passes all crash tests and emissions standards, as well has english stickers, and all the standard DOT stuff. (Child Seats can be an issue).

Apparently to get any messages from Mexico though is pretty difficult. They recommended that I contact Mitsubishi Global, and they can send a letter on their behalf but this would only work if i was to go through a dealer.

Now to get it into canada it doesn't follow the regular RIV. RIV is only applicable for vehicles that were originally distributed in the US. But, the canadian border told me that there shouldn't be any issues at all, as long as it was registered in the US. If its not registered in the US, it makes things incredibly difficult, and the inspections are incredibly thorough.

In the end, I didn't have the time to do it. Still would love to have a 4 cylinder turbo diesel here, but seemed like an awful lot of red tape to jump through, and who knows... you could get here and they wouldn't let you cross the border.

Thanks for the input,

How do you register it in the us without being a US citizen or having a residency in the US?

This all feels like that Seinfeld episode where Kramer and Newman have what they think is a means to collecting pop bottles and cans in NYC, and taking them to Michigan for triple the deposit money. Did not work out so well for them.

I still want to get a late model Type 1 from Mexico. Have no idea how to get that accomplished though (without having to go down myself)

Unless you have tons of money to spend and love to show off to everyone how "rare" your car is, why would anyone want to import a car here that is going to be next to impossible to service and find parts for? I guess I just don't get it. Kind of like the JDM craze.
