If you get the durango, go with the R/T version. They have plenty of go.

My mom was gona buy one but then settled for the jeep. She liked the feel of the jeep more. The jeep came with leather!!!
not to mention it's trail rated. and with the V8 they really go, even the I6 still has plenty of power.

It would be tough choice. I would choose on which one you like the look of best. Seeing as they are made by the same company and features are comparable.

The Jeep is definately better on the inside. Probly has better off-road capabilities too

Cool new forum eh?

Go with the jeep

The 5.9l is an awesome engine, But it's a PIG on gas. Plus it requires premium gas or it knocks. The Cherokee is better, easier to off-road. The Cherokee had a 5.9l version in 98 that would make it a great off-roader!! But the 4.7l in the new Cherokee(99+) is a great all around engine.
How about a 2002 Dakota:D
like this one:thumbsup:

don't knock the 4.7 in the jeeps. those things are quick.

5.9 R/T

My 2 cents:

For offroading Jeep, hands down.

As for speed the Durango R/T isn't great, it feels a lot faster then it is. If you like the looks of the new Durango (very slim chance if you've ever seen one) you can get it with the HEMI and thats the better way to go. I think the 98 Jeep with the 5.9 was actually faster then the Durango R/T. Currently in the JGC you have two flavors for the 4.7, regular and high output. The HO's, orginally only available on the Overland edition are now an available option on all the limited's and these things go. Not as torquey as the 5.9 but more hp and better mpg, if a 4.7HO went up against a Durango R/T my money would be on the jeep, especially in a 1/4 mile or longer. The 4.7 is also a lot smoother then the 5.9, not to mention quieter, the tranny is quite a bit better on the 4.7 IMO. Given the choice I would take a Jeep with the 4.7HO anyday over the Durango R/T. Much classier vehicle, with a near luxury car interior.

Hard Numbers:

5.9 R/T and 98 Ltd Jeep - 250hp 345lb/ft tq
5.9 (non R/T) - 245hp 335lb/ft tq

4.7 - 235hp 300lb/ft tq
4.7HO - 265hp 335lb/ft tq

PS - That pic of the Durango is misleading, as it may or may not be an R/T. An R/T comes with single 3" exaust, different rims and chrome badging.

If I could get a diesel Durango... I would get one...

However I find the Jeep has much better interiors and overall better styling.

Buddy has a 5.9l R/t and we have taken it on a number of trips to fernie for snow boarding. I love it very comfy good looking and has some decent power. Also very stable and nimble footed on slippery highways for an SUV! go with the RT

The new Dodge trucks offer the 5.7L Hemi instead of the old 5.9L V8. The 5.9 L is based on early 90's technology and it doesn't have the best track record for reliability. My pick for offroading hands down would be the Jeep, but also for reliability - the 4.7L Engines are well designed.

The older Durango's look nice, and if you are after a :bigpimp: ride, it might be worth going with the Durango, but that's it.

Thats my opinion.

For true offroad use, i feel theyre both shitty...

but for basic offroad use, i'd have to go with the cherokee

I know its just your opinion, but it seems odd that you'd feel a Jeep is not suited to offroad use. Hell they made SUV's even before the term was invented, and offroad use has been a major design feature of all the Jeeps.

Have a look:

There aren't many vehicles that you can drive from the dealer's lot to rough roads using the stock setups. I guess it just strikes me as odd whenever someone says jeeps aren't for offroad use. :dunno:

I have to assume you've never offroaded in one.

5.9 R/T

Again you pickin on a motor I use to have. Whats with that? lol I disagree, the 360 has been a workhorse motor for chryco since the muscle car days. While it did go through a minor redesign for fuel injection it still retained a lot of its old specs from before. Considering you can get a crate 360 with 380-400hp N/A with the same bottom end from chryco I don't think 250hp is going to bother it much. Pretty stout little motor actually, it just needs to breathe a little better and it can make a ton of power.

Bah, see the post above. Good luck finding a factory car that will handle off road use as well as a jeep.

LOL I know I pick on that motor, I guess its just I know too many people who have had problems with it. We'll just have to disagree on that, but I will agree with you that with a few breather mods will really wake that engine up.
