View Full Version : One car broken into every hour

While many beyond members are busy working in their garages on their pride and joy one thing is often overlooked and that is vehicle security. You may spend all winter working on your projects but all that hard work can dissapear the moment you walk away from it. Although there is nothing you can do to guarentee your vehicle is not stolen, there are some common sense practices will help reduce your risk:

1. Lock your doors
2. Keep valuables out of sight
3. Park in well lit/high traffic areas
4. Get an alarm (2 way if possible)
5. Don't advertise your stereo parts on your backwindows!

Based on Calgary Police Service statistics that were recently released, during last year there was a car break and enter every hour. Theives had a field day in the community of Connaught where there was nearly 300 incidents throughout the year. The following is a breakdown by community (including campus lots and transit lots):

i remember when i lived there, my cars were broken into/stolen three times in one month... lock those doors!

I think its common sense. If you have a nice looking car, no matter what area you are in. Someone is gonna try to steal it.
So your best bet is to leave it in a garage that doesnt have a secondary door to access.
If you have one with a secondary door, turn up the sensitivy and get "THE CLUB". A theif will take a second thought about stealin a car with an alarm and a "club".

the numbers are kinda deceptive... because some neighbourhoods are considerably larger than others...

would be interesting to see how many cars are stolen per 1000 people or something

i thoguht the same thing when i saw this in the paper a couple days ago, for example dover:130 is a HUGE neighbourhood, it goes from peigan to 17th ave and from deerfoot to 52nd ave (i think)

compared to some of the newer communities that have maybe 200 houses.

Insurance varies depending on neighborhood right? So that means the Bayview and Pumphill people are paying next to nothing for car insurance. But I guess they make up for it in house insurance LOL.

The best thing to do is keep stuff out of site.

My cavalier was broken into near the U of A because I left a 24 CD case on the seat. The fuckers broke my window ($175), took some CDs and a paycheck from my part time job (WTF?).

Anyhoo, keep your stuff out of sight and they'll probably pass your car by. Nothing to see, nothing to steal.

What about if your windows are tinted? and they're curious and break in anyways...

just buy a $1 flashing red led from RS hook it up to a switch and turn the switch on when you leave your car... any theive with half a brain wont even chance touching a car with a flashign red light in it, because there is always another car 2 houses down without a flashing red light :D

Insurance varies according to geographical region not residential neighborhoods... otherwise people living in newly developed areas would be paying next to nothing for insurance ;)

Also, for all you apartment residents out there, never park your car in the underground, "secure" parking. Most car break-ins happen in underground parking.

think about it, if you were stealing stuff, would you rather chance it with a car with the light in it, or walk 5 steps to the next car without a red light?

Haha wow, my neighborhood (fairview) has 11 break ins whereas acadia which is right next door has 104! lol thats nuts!

QuasarCav
02-11-2004, 12:37 PM
yeah I used to live in Acadia, tons of prowlings and it's not really a rich neighbourhood.

Fairview on the other hand, bling bling. with the bowling alley and the perfect pizza.

t3rry
02-11-2004, 12:38 PM
isn't acadia a much larger neighbourhood? (that could be why)

To me, it would depend on which car is hotter. I wouldn't be scared of any sort of flashing light. And I don't think people that break into cars are either, they'll do it in broad day light in busy places... and when car alarms go off no one really cares either.

maybe if they are idiots, but im sure 90% of theives aren't quite that stupid...

and these stats are for car prowlings... wether the car is a hot car or not has nothing to do with the value of the contents.

They were most likely using it to "jack" something else (ie: street bikes). This happened to one of my friends moms they found the van ditched with 2 street bikes in it...

Exactly, if your budget is next to nothing or you don't want to spent money on an alarm, buy an L.E.D. I've put a couple in my friends cars already. I just know that if I was one of those guys that rip off cars I would think twice before trying to break into a car w/ a L.E.D. It's not to say the thieves won't touch your car but they will look for an easier target before the come for yours.

I think thefts are higher in B.C. period just because they have ocean access so cars are stolen, chopped and the parts are sold overseas.

some foreskins stole my van a few years back and had the nerve to drive around my community. all the neighbors that saw it thought it was just me driving around (windows were black) then one day they pulled in INTO MY GARAGE and proceeded to go out into my yard and break in through a basement window!! Luckily at the time had a crazy asian guy renting the basement and he happend to be home from work for some reason. so when they went and started fucking with my window the guy came out the back door and managed to cane one of them with a bamboo rod!!
then apperently they jumped BACK in my van and took off.... when cops got to it they said it had been use to steal things.

crazy bastards:whipped:
