View Full Version : Is your house warm?

I moved to Montreux (near aspen for those who dont know) in May and now that Winter is setting in I am finding that my master bedroom is way colder than my previous house (in arbour lake).

The room is probably 1.5 times larger than the last house and has a larger bathroom and large walk-in closet coming off it. Both of those have doors.

I only seem to have two vents for heating in the room and I've moved the furniture off them. I try and keep the heat down to 19 deg during the day as I don't want a massive gas bill. The house was built in 2006/2007 and faces SW so this rooms windows face NE.

Questions for others:

Is your house cold in winter?
What do you do to keep it warm? or do you just bundle up?
What temp do you keep your furnace at?

Programmed:

Weekdays
7am to 5pm 19 deg
5pm tp 9pm 23 deg
9pm to 7am 21 deg

Weekends

23 deg all day
21 at night

When there are days I feel cold I do a manual increase to 24 deg that autmatically goes back to the program after 2 hours.

We have a regular two storey, front garage set up. The bonus room over the garage is always colder than the rest of the house. That's the only room that is inconsistent though.

I can highly recommend that stuff you put over windows to keep heat in. It looks like seran wrap basically, can't remember what its called, but it made a world of difference in my university house

The room above the attached garage is always going to be colder. Insulated garage may help a bit. Check your nooks, corners or closets in the area and make sure that there is no frost built up during cold days.

I live in the basement with my parents.

Yes it's damn warm in the winter.
We set the furnace to 72deg (House built in 60's. Ancient thermostat on ancient measurements).
Nothing else really to keep warm.

The only time it seems to be damn cold is around 0°C. It's warm when it's freezing outside, cool in the summer, but when this kinda temperature comes around the basement is freezing and I gotta keep warm with extra clothing/space heaters.

Hmm well our bonus room is above the garage and surprisingly its pretty warm for the most part, however it faces sw west all day long and so gets the most sun so heats up during the day.

Maybe like Jwslam its just cold around this temperature - i'll have to monitor it over winter.

I also thought about getting one of those infrared(?) things that you see where the cracks in windows etc are so that I can make sure that all the gaps are plugged, but im not sure if Rona etc carries them.

Extra blow in insulation in the atic and a spray foamed garage keep my utility bills crazy low too.

The thermostat is at 24 and it's still cold in the house? Do you live in a tent?

I keep my house at about 17 (before I shower, I turn it up to about 21 or so, and back down to 17 afterwards) and I find it comfortable. I couldn't stand 24.

Probably because, like me, the thermostat is in a not so great place. Mine is set to 23*C, but is in the hallway, right outside the office, which has a lot of heat from computers, etc.

23*C in the hallway, is around 20* in the living room

Im the same way.. 18.5 MAX for me in my house.. 24 would be unbearable for me. I bump it up a bit in the morning as everything seems cold whn you get out of bed but she runs steady at 18.5 all other times.

I usually have the heat off in the Summer and mostly through the Winter. I don't like the dryness it creates.

The condo I am at now has heated floors and I find the heat is quite randomly dispersed.

My new place has the same thing, hopefully the heated floors will be more even. I guess I will find out in the next few weeks.

What kind of bird?

I've had it set to 20.5 all weekend and its been great. Although I should probably schedule it so its 20.5 only at night and then again in early morning.

Anyone have a smart thermostat like the Nest or Ecobee? Just wondering if they make a difference to keeping better control over the temps in your house.

In the summer I've seen my condo get up to 28-30 degrees, at which point I'm sitting in my underwear wearing a wet towel as a turban sitting in front of a fan. I also cannot sleep when it's that hot, so I have to stay up super late. I'm rarely home then, though, but when I am it sucks. I'll be putting in AC next year regardless of cost, I won't do that again.

Loving the current weather though, I can keep my place around 15 degrees. I've also never turned on my heat except to see if it works, and my place stays above 20 degrees with the windows shut, probably because it's in a condo building.

OP get a thermometer and see what the ACTUAL room temps are.... instead of by "feel".

- our master bedroom is 19c and 45% humidity day/night (winter Duvet)
- a room or house humidifier helps the air "feel" warmer (or colder if its close to zero)
- my office is in my basement and i wear a sweater when down here
- def plastic film windows, will help when it gets REALLY cold
- a internet controlled thermostat is also VERY cool and will help with the bills --> http://www.ebay.ca/itm/NEW-Filtrete-WiFi-Enabled-Programmable-Thermostat-3M50-Internet-Android-iphone-/180977013083?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a2312115b

2 furnaces FTW.

Basement heated floors set to 21 24/7 from Oct to May.

Main floor set to 23 8am to 10pm. 16 from 10pm to 8am.

Upper floor set to 23 from 10pm to 8am. 21 from 8am to 10pm.

We have a toddler that always kicks off his blankets. Plus my wife says it is cold even at 23.

20 degrees during the cool months like we are entering into now. The problem with the west coast is the dampness, I hate it, so I like the house a little warmer than I would have had it in Calgary.

That said, I just bought a big dehumidifier today to pull the dampness out of the air, which should make the house feel warmer at the same time.

Not a fan of an overly hot house. Until a couple days ago, my heat was completely shut off for over 6 months. I basically use my electric fireplace to heat the whole house (single floor rancher).

Haha same boat with my Senegal parrot, he gets an attitude as soon as the thermostat hits 19.5 so minimum temperature from September to April is 20

Typically that means she's strayed too far from the oven.

I have had a Nest since about June. It works well. The auto away feature is pretty slick with the proximity sensors. So if you leave for more than a half hour it goes away but when it notices you're back it heats the place back up. The learning feature works equally well. As you adjust it it learns your patterns and starts adjusting it for you automatically. The app was recently updated as well as the firmware. I would recommend it.

20C for wake up & when we get home.
17.5C for the night.
The rest is auto-away at 16C & self-learning.

It learned my patterns a few times already, but I threw them out becasue I didn't like it.
Learnt it takes ~20minutes to heat the home from ~19C to ~20C.

ME TOO I HATE SUMMERS IN MY CONDO!!
Summer + sun + leather couch = death

On the upside... I've only turn the thermostat up ONCE to see if it works when i moved in. Other than that my thermo tab is pushed all the way left. Heat from the hallway and others around my unit keep my thermo reading a steady 23C in winter.

Set to 20c and gets pretty warm upstairs with large windows, basement feels cold though, good for working out down there, we did have the office in the basement but we moved it upstairs because just too cold to sit down there for long periods of time.

Probably because I'm used to the old house we had that had in floor heat in the basement, I sure miss that!
