Hmmm.... My buddies 2001 GTi ran 12.1 at 125mph in Edmonton just a few weeks ago, and he had to shut down early. He also ran an 11.6 in the same car in Mission last month.

Was going to say, how many people actually submitted if anyone in the 13's make the list? Pretty sure there's more than 8 sub 12 sec. sport compacts out there.

(Also, is a NSX really considered a sport compact?)

My Aristo is a sport compact according to the list's definition... And it will be on the list next year.

Why don't we just open it up to all V8less imports, period? We're practically there already.

Also if the displacement cap is still 3.5L, the GTRs are out.

Displacement cap never should have been changed to 3.8L. That's way too big. This is supposed to be compact cars small displacement motors. The cap at 3.5L is even a little high IMO. But was set there to keep in the Supras. I think it should be 3.0L or less.

I think displacement is the wrong way to go about this anyway.

Better "sport compact" list would be:

V8less, any displacement allowed
Under 3000lbs from factory
Gasoline as main fuel
Registered in Alberta

Just my suggestion. I think the weight restriction would make it more of a true sport compact list.

EDIT: Because like I mentioned previously, my Aristo qualifies even though it ain't sporty and it sure as shit ain't compact. :D

3000lbs? That would keep the DSMs & EVOs out :(

Z_Fan
10-24-2012, 08:39 PM
Maybe it should only be 4-bangers. :poosie:

I think all cars running quicker than their tech level should be left at 11.49ET [for example] on the list, and those with properly prepped cars running quicker would show up higher on the list.

So you run 10.8 with no roll protection and you get stuck at 11.49 on the list.

The weight restriction would keep all kinds of older true sport compact cars out. New technology ensures newer vehicles are lighter.

You guys can complain all you want but I am sure the rules wont change. I agree with some of the suggestions proposed however you have to keep in mind this isnt an official list. The person that controls the rules wont change them so that his car doesn't qualify. If you care enough to be competitive on THIS list then build a ringer of a drag car, cheat, buy a gtr, or start your own list that complies with track rules and sport compact even rules. If not suck it up and play along. :D

From Wikipedia:

The exact definition of a sport compact remains a subject of debate. Some believe that any sporty compact car falls into this category. As with most automotive language, the category "sports compact" is not precise.

However as "the term compact car is a largely North American term" and "The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines a "Compact" car as measuring between 100 cubic feet (2.8 m3) and 109 cubic feet (3.1 m3) of combined passenger and cargo volume capacity", the term compact is defined precisely in the US. A sports car such as a Lotus Esprit or Nissan 370Z is defined as a two-seater, and should not be a considered a sport compact simply because it has the same length as many compacts, because a modest back seat is required for a car to be a compact.

A four-cylinder engine is clearly not a requirement. Of course if a sports car maker made a subcompact or compact model it should still be considered a sport compact.

Nevertheless, the designation of the "sport compact" is generally reserved for the higher-performance versions of common, lower-performance compact and economy vehicles. A car that is specifically designed to be a performance automobile (a sports car such as grand tourer or an exotic sports car) may also be compact in size, but is clearly delineated from an ordinary compact by manufacturer's performance intent. Thus, a "sports car" is a car specifically intended to provide elevated vehicle performance. The "sports compact", on the other hand, is a compact car that has been improved (by owner or manufacturer) to provide an elevated degree of vehicle performance over the base version of the car.

Cars such as the Toyota Supra, Acura NSX, Lotus Elise, and the Nissan Skyline clearly fall into a different market segment than even the highest performance production versions of the Honda Civic and specifically prepared post-production-tuned automobiles.

Yes, the AWD ones are ~3300 in stock form. Power to weight ratio is easily improved by the potent 4G63.:D

I wish this were true. Very few cars are lighter than the previous generation. Some companies are finally pulling their head out of their ass and revisiting the weight goals. BMW is not one of them, and the amount of over 3000lb 4 cyl's boggles the mind!
We can hope!

It should be true. ;-)

Either way, the list should keep track of truly small displacement engines. Not large engines up to 3.8L with only 6 cylinders. (some 8 cylinders happen to be 3.8L)

I actually think 3500cc is as high as it should ever go. Wouldn't hurt my feelings to see it down as low as 3000cc. Since we can't really keep track of what is or isn't a sport compact car - IMO - we should be trying to keep track of what any vehicle with a small displacement engine is capable of at the track. Making 600whp with a 3.8L engine is easy peasy. Doing it with 4 cylinders in a 2.4L engine is more costly, difficult and impressive.

Anyhow... closing in on 4L is simply not small in my book. I don't much care about cargo space, how many doors you have, how many seats you have, or what year vehicle you've got. I just want to see you run 11's with 2L of engine.

good lord.... don't suggest cars need to follow the safety rules!!!

If you do, douchbag might start slandering you and pointing fingers and making accusations at you all over the internet.

http://performance-shop.com/showthread.php?t=48504

Brief synopsis.... Suprafag gets punted for running too fast with no equipment.

He gets his panties in a bunch claiming someone ratted him out , and proceeds to blame the 2 guys that mentioned how lax Edmonton tech must be on 780 tuners ....
