Personally, when the original rumors were going around that it was going to be $299-399, I would've been all over that. Now that I see it's the same price as the iPad - no thank you. I'll wait for the firesale in a few months.

Anybody know where I'll be able to play with one of these things?

Anyone lining up for one? :rofl:

I thought the ARM based ones were supposed to be much cheaper and the x64 ones would be closer to iPad pricing. Hmm wonder how well this will do. Don't really see anyone talking about it at all.

I think it will be a bit of a failure. It's a brand new ecosystem with very little apps at all. Perhaps if all you use is Office and can wait for the apps (if they come), then it could be useful.

I'm not looking forward to Windows 8 at all, and at that price, I'd rather have an Android tablet (or 2).

Mark my word, 50% off on boxing day if any retail channels has the balls to carry this.

Acer, the maker of all cheap shit has the cheapest Win 8 tablet for $500, $750 with dock and 64GB which just to turn into basically a $200 Netbook. I was doubting Surface can come to rumored price if Google Nexus 7 had to cut much off to make it under $300.

Marketing failed from MS. Apple can command that price because it's the only game in town. Google knows they only way to beat Apple is to go cheap and volume, a page from MS's playbook in the 90s. There is no room for MS to play at all. MS brand just doesn't command that premium.

Right now, getting this tablet for Christmas will be like getting Go-Bots instead of Transformers when I was a kid. :rofl:

No maybe about it. You can. Windows 7 laptops are cheaper and the Win 8 upgrade is only $15.

$39 is the student pricing, $15 is the upgrade price from a Windows 7 laptop depending on when you bought the laptop.

Honestly just the USB ports puts this above iPad. This can truly replace a laptop but yea for a new line of product, price seems high.

W........T..........F? This isn't the Surface, what is this? This is the Surface:

I've been following the research and design on this project for years, how the hell did it get turned into this and when? They turned an awesome product with lots of potential into a piece of crap. Not to mention some companies like Wind were using this Surface technology already and now this tablet is the Surface? So they have 2 different products called the Surface? Which one is it? Oh Microsoft, you never fail to disappoint.

I think he meant that matching iPad price point isn't enough for people to try a new system with inferior app selections.

There are full Windows 8 tablets if you need old i386 programs. But since few are design for Metro anyway, it doesn't really matter. They also cost more, bulkier and not as good battery life.

MS never consumerize this technology. Really, who wants a $20K table?

It's been a while since I've read anything, but a few months ago they mentioned it will run Windows RT apps... Which could include both metro apps, along with Windows apps...

I remember them saying back that the Windows RT tablets would include Microsoft Office... As far as I know (and think), developers should only have to cross-compile (when the SDK is available) their apps for ARM based NT platform...

What really bugs me about this, is no cellular modem... Only wifi? are you kidding me? I wanted to pick one of these up for work... Not going to happen if I have to leach off wifi, or setup wifi tethering with my phone...

The next model up is the only one worth getting IMO, this one has a low resolution non-IPS panel. The other one has a proper display.

Everyone? :dunno: Restaurants, mobile phone retailers, offices. The point of selling a product is to sell it commercially, selling individually to retailers is didley squat.

How is that different from an Ipad running iOS compared to a Mac running Mountain Lion or what ever its called? Its actually pretty similar.

RT = ARM based

W8 = X86 based

I am a bit baffled at the price.. I wonder if the third party oem RT tables from Samsung etc will be cheaper?
