I've always had a soft spot for these things, and everyone I have talked to has said that the 4.0L inline sixes in these things are bulletproof. Essentially I am looking at purchasing a winter beater for the girlfriend, and where I work we have had one sitting in our lot for the last 5-6 months or so. It is a wholesale unit, so essentially it simply goes to the highest bidder, sold as is. I believe that I can purchase it from our sales department for around $150.

It is a 2001 Cherokee, with power everything, automatic. 202,000km on it, and I was genuinly impressed when I walked out to it with a booster pack and attempted to start it for the first time since march. It started like it had been running yesterday. Body is in great shape, interior is awesome, everything is completly stock on this vehicle.

Am I crazy to want this vehicle? Any weak spots I should be looking out for?

Cheers

for $150 you are crazy not to want that vehicle.

Bulletproof except for the manifold in 99+ (I think) models.

Look for sagging rear springs and check the seals. Check the heater core. But really, these are pretty basic and fairly well built vehicles. If you can scoop it up for under a grand I'd say go for it.

Even if you don't want it for yourself, if you can get it for anywhere near that price pick it up and I'll buy it from you for a wicked profit. (I've been looking for a cheap offroader)

I had an '01 Cherokee that I got rid of with 270,000km. I don't miss it, but it was definitely an awesome vehicle. I would never not recommend one.

Ditto - I had a 99'

Basic maintenence, I had the saggy springs, bad heater core and rear main seal leak.. but after fixing those things - it would never let me down, not once.

I would buy another one if I could get a clean unmolested one..

It is clean, completly unmolested, and has 3/4 tank of gas in it, almost worth it just for the fuel. I have heard that the rear main seal is an issue on them, and just looking at it sitting in the lot it looks like the rear springs are saggy for sure. I'll see if I can get some pictures. Also could use a new windshield. Can anyone recommend a cheap place to get one?

unless there is a hole straight through the windshield i wouldnt bother replacing going into winter.

car is under 12 years old so you dont need a safety, plus it will just get destroyed within 6 months anyway

I can imagine these having major rust issues, but apart from some minor spots on the roof, this unit is good! Just wish it wasn't silver... Thanks for the input!

No more rust issues than any other vehicle that is over a dozen years old. The weakest spot on these is at the front of the rain rails that run along the sides of the roof.

I had an '89 Jeep Cherokee Limited for shits and giggles one winter and I loved it. Sad I sold it actually. Bought it for 1500 and sold it for 2500 after I fixed it up.

Bulletproof engine, easy to work on yourself, great vehicle. I love the looks of it also.

I LOVE my XJ's.. most durable machines on the road. They leak, theyre slow but they are awesome. Ive had 5 of them.

My daily drive is one of the most mint XJ's ive seen. 1 owner family before me stored it with their tent trailer so its never seen winter. 0 rust. Love it.

The black nightmare is my bush baby and ive had this thing in some EFFED up situations and its never let me down 300+ kms and she drives like shes new. She was mint for an 88 when i got her but shes a little rough now...

Easiest vehicle to fix and are alot of fun in summer and winter.
