Hey just looking for opinions on the best device to extend my wifi range. Signal is weak at one end of the house.

Thanks!

I use an Airport Express Base Station $99, also have two of the previous older models, one from 2004 and it works to this day. Nice to be up and running in ten minutes from opening the box to using it. I use one of them to stream music from my iPhone or computer to the stereo, one for my printer and the third for the TV/Blu-ray, updates in software, etc. All are acting as a WiFi network as well.

Mac and PC friendly as I have both.

Might have a brain tumour from all the WiFi in my house.

How far does it have to go, thru how many walls?

There's a lot you can do to improve WiFi reception:
1) use 2.4GHz instead of 5GHz, it will penetrate better and reach farther
2) use inSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/) to pick the optimal channel for your AP
3) keep your AP at least 2' away from walls/everything, especially metals or wiring
4) put the AP in the middle of the house/coverage area
5) keep your antennas pointed vertically... the signal goes out sideways. Imagine placing a bagel/donut on your antenna to visualize the signal, like this:

If that doesn't fix it, you can:
a) if you have Ethernet cable run, put another AP at the other end of the house
b) wireless repeater somewhere halfway, any AP can be configured to do this
a) replace one of the antennas on your access point with a directional antenna like this (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/High-gain-2-4GHz-14dBi-directional-antenna-panel-patch-/170778036572) or this (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/High-gain-2-4GHz-11dBi-directional-antenna-panel-patch-/170824552356). I have a bunch of these exact ones, they work great. The first one is probably overkill and has a pretty narrow beamwidth...

You really have two options. Swap out your router for a high powered one:

Second option, you could try powerline networking which removes the need for wifi altogether. If you need a wifi point for a phone or something, just get a cheap range booster/cheap wifi router and put on the end of the powerline.

:poosie:

Oh and DD-WRT if your router supports it

Interesting stuff thus far. It's a telus router right now... so I was thinking maybe just get another router and use it as an access point :dunno:

Seems the range on the telus routers are horrible.

I also have a telus router and it sucks. I got another router and set up a second wireless network.
