Looking to buy a couple 50 lb bags of modified thinset, to mortar tiles to a plywood subfloor.

It doesn't appear to be called that at the big building stores (Rona, Totem, HD). Is this stuff called something different?

Where is latex modified thinset sold? Or what is the proper name for this stuff?

They all sell modified thinset. Home Depot sells "Versabond" which is made by Custom. Rona sells "UltraFlex II" which is made by Mapei. Not sure which brand Lowes carry. It's harder to find NON-modified than modified.

One of the types at home depot says you can use it for bonding to plywood.

Also looking for some inexpensive tile for a rental, can you recommend good store for cheap tile?

Home Depot usually has either a $0.99/sqft sale going on or they have contractor lots which are usually about the same price. Just make sure to grab a few extra boxes in case you need to do repairs down the road as they are not usually a regular stock tile.

Sometimes you can get lucky at Costco, or Last Chance Trading Company, Graham Auctions (held on Saturdays) or the Habitat for Humanity Restore, depending on how much you need and how quickly.
