Welder for sure. 120V welders just don't cut it. Ask me, I own two.

If you're looking for a welder, I've got a millermatic 211 that does 110v and 220v

I'd go with heater for the winter - perhaps welder or air compressor for summer. (Depending what you do most)

Stop using your garage as a garage.

Paint walls beachy murals, paint ceiling sky blue, cover garage floor with sand, install hot tub, have raging beach parties all winter long.

If you have no use for a welder and need a standard outlet in that location you could always just turn it into a regular 120V outlet.

Many 120v welders can be converted to 240v.
I know my Lincoln Mig-Pak 140 can, I just don't have 240v and don't want to pay an electrician to come out.

I've got a couple of 220's in my garage. I made up a 220 extension cord and use it to run my huge-ass table saw. Can rip an 8' sheet of plywood in about 10 seconds.

it's all about prep an technique. multi passes seem to be a common thing for me but i trust my steel welds like non other, but yes a voltage sensing 220volt would be pretty sweet. the problem is that you'll need more than just a welder. add on a decent chop saw, a couple grinders and a half ton work bench.
