Hey all,

So, as I am now a "downtowner," I am looking to upgrade from my ski jacket (which is roasting hot and bulky), to a more stylish wool or partial wool coat, the kind that is business casual but still designed for the weather.

Something like this:

http://img.alibaba.com/wsphoto/v0/507959125_1/men-s-coat-warm-wool-coat-long-business-men-coat-superior-quality-men-s-coat-men.jpg

My budget is ceiling is $350, and it doesn't need to be massive brand name, or even tailored. I just would like, as I see it, "a nice coat," affordable, comfortable, and can be worn as a final layer in really cold weather, and a regular coat in normal winter weather.

Any suggestions? So far at work, I've heard Indochino and Moores.

What size suit jacket do you wear?

Banana Republic. Subscribe to e-mail and wait for a 30-40% off coupon. It's almost weekly.

I got this for 40% off!

Boost: that's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for.

Str1der: I'm... well, moderately rotund :( I don't know my exact jacket size, but I would probably fit a L or XL coat

I'm going to guess he probably doesn't want to spend a lot of time in the mall going from store to store :dunno:

It feels so good to get 40% off haha I don't think I can shop anywhere now and their shirts fit so good. :D

There are a lot out there and vary considerably in price and style. I shopped around a lot and ended up getting one at Banana Republic because it was simple enough and didn't cost over a grand.

Looked at Winners, Harry Rosen, Holt, Brook Brothers, The Bay, Crown Surplus, BR, O'Connors, Forman's.

H&M. <$100 and good styles and cuts. quality won't be as good, but you also won't swear as much went some dirty scrubs up against you on the Ctrain

Thats great that the shirts work for you, some reason they don't for me.

I would also check Zara (prefered), or Le Chateau/H&M/Express for overcoats.

I have the BR one personally - even wore it today! Although the style is rather plain, I find their cut/tailoring is amongst the nicest off-the-rack for the price range. Their material is also the softest for the price too. Keeps me quite warm in the coldest of winters, but only as long as I wear a sweater over my shirt and bundle up with a scarf.

Thanks for all the recommendations, everyone. I work a block and a bit from TD Square (I beleive they have an H&M and a Harry Rosen there), I can do some lunch shopping over the next couple of days to find some styles and prices I like

BR, H&M, Harry Rosen, Henry Singer, Holt, Brooks Brothers, if you can't find a coat there you just ain't looking hard enough! (Budget's a whole other ballgame though..)

I'd have to agree with everyone about BR, also a few years ago I bought one from Tommy Hilfiger in Chinook when they had a 60% off sale, really liked the fit and material and kept me warm without having to layer, not sure if there are any more TH stores in Calgary but you should look into that too.

If you check out TH, also swing by Abercrombie & Fitch, Aeropostale, and Bench.

More things I didn't know... I had no idea TH, A&F, Aeropostale carried wool coats. I thought those were all causual, shorts and t-shirt type stuff with maybe a sweater or hoodie.

Anyway, +1 for BR. Currently on my second one in 5 years. Those things are basically only good for our short Fall and Spring. Too hot for the summer, and way too light for our crazy winters, but they're fine for chinook days. I made the mistake of getting a FCUK double breasted coat once. The lining on that thing got shredded after one season and just basically fell apart. Never again.

The Bay downtown carries a selection from budget to baller. Depends on the style you're looking for, old man, young man, slimmer fit, etc

The last jacket I found at Banana and Club Monaco was way too thin for our winters, but as mentioned above, good for our fall/spring.

I found a Strellson at the Bay for 500 and it is warm and hellaplush
