man, do the lakers suck... their offense is mediocre at best and nobody but dwight is playing defense...

there doesn't seem to be a dominant team yet.. all the powerhouses have struggled, Miami, OKC, San Antonio and Boston...

Miami is the team to beat this year for sure. Theyre lookin pretty solid so far.

I'm not quite sure if I saw Miami really struggle yet. They look great. Unlike the Lakers.

Excited to see what Brooklyn does this year! Was a big Nets fan when Jason Kidd was there. Picked myself up a Brooklyn Nets sweater this year.

Miami...?

They are 4-1 and have won the last two games by 55 points. The loss to the knicks was just a melo show.

I'm impressed how the bulls are doing without my #1 Deeee Rose. I want him back :(

Maybe struggle wasn't the right word, but they were a play away from losing to Denver and starting the season 1-2. Also, until last night's win over BK, they were letting opponents score well over 100 points per game.

Miami has changed from slower pace, half court team to an up-tempo, run and gun team.

They really need to fire mike brown.
Also their bench blows. They need to keep jamison and jordan hill, and get rid of the rest of the bench.

Again this is just my opinion.

hmm.. coming from a big lakers fan i wouldnt say they completely suck.

its 5 games in the season, with half of the team being new faces and a new offense. i personally think the offense isnt the problem, but defensive consistency is definitely top of the list.

also, i dont know what to think about mike brown, but he needs to step it up.. especially with rumors of Jerry Sloan wanting the job haha

Spurs got spanked last night but other than that I would rank Spurs 1 and Miami 2. Minnesota and Chicago are big surprises so far and as for Brooklyn... They are the Brooklyn Nots. The Lakers... Not much else to say for the moment as the season is still young but they have a Kobe and with that, anything is possible.

I know I won't hear the end of it but I'm a big raptors fan even though they suck.

It was awesome having lowry. Now that he's injured it looks like the old raptors again.

I'm a huge bargnani fan but I think it's time to change things up. They should trade away bargnani and calderon while they are worth something. They just signed derozen so they will be keeping him.

I do enjoy keeping up with basketball now, mainly because of a friends fantasy league.

I'm not surprised MB finally got fired. Hopefully Nash can orchestrate that offence when he gets back. I don't like the lakers but I have Nash and Kobe in my pool :poosie:

I don't really think so because the offense wasn't really the problem. Sure their pace is going to pick up and they're sure to run more transition. But defensively they've just been playing terribly, and d'Antoni isn't exactly known for his defensive prowess.

Their problem has been a lack of perimeter defense.
- Nash is like a rotating door
- Kobe's job is more tailored for the offensive end so he can't play too hard on defense and risk getting into foul trouble.
- MWP is probably the only good perimeter defender, but he's still too slow to guard anyone in the backcourt.

Interior defense hasn't been that good either. Dwight's rotation's have been a step late (which is probably attributable to his still recovering back). Pau is getting drawn out farther into the mid-range and guys are taking advantage of his inability to move with them when they face up.

Defensive rebounding has also been an issue. It's hard to believe that with a front court of Dwight, Pau, and Metta that anyone can get an offensive board, but they've shown an inability lately to keep guys out. Isiah Thomas last night managed to get in their for some short rebounds, and there really isn't any excuse for a point guard to be able to grab a rebound anywhere near the hoop with those 3 on the floor.

I'm not saying he's a bad defender, but I think he's an average defender (during the season) who gets voted onto the first-team all defense because he's Kobe. He can be a phenomenal defender when he doesn't have to worry about playing offense. My example would be his place on the last two Olympic teams. He's happily (as happy as you can expect Kobe to be) passed off the offensive load to guys like Lebron, Dwyane, and Chris Paul, while he locks down his assignment.

At the end of the day, Kobe's value to the Lakers falls in his offensive abilities and, even now, the Lakers would rather he plays soft positional defense than risk getting him into foul trouble and not have him on the offensive end. Even with the likes of Nash and Howard on the team, the offense still runs through him. And the majority of looks they'll get will be the result of the double- and triple-teams that he draws.

ajooo
11-12-2012, 12:40 PM
i agree with some of your points, however teams havent been double/triple teaming kobe, just because of everyone else on the floor.

D'antoni isnt known for his defense, but his last year with the Knicks they were top 10, and thats with Chandler. Howard is 10x better of a defensive player then Chandler so we'll see what they can do. Plus, theres talk of Mike going after Nate McMillan for defensive assistant so that will be a a boost as well.

sexualbanana
11-12-2012, 12:55 PM
MWP got a lot of good looks at the 3-point line last night against Sac because of Kobe's penetration though.

But again, it's not the offense that poses the biggest problem for the Lakers. It's on the defensive end. Rebounding and perimeter defense needs to improve. They're not as athletic as the Heat are, so they need to rely on forcing outside shots, grabbing the miss, and making the quick outlet pass (like the Suns with Amare, Marion, and Nash. Not to say Amare was ever a good defender, but he could rebound). They're not really doing that right now, and they're allowing smaller guards to get rebounds and allow for second-chance points.

Interesting stat I found on Twitter:

Traditionally, d'Antoni defenses have had an average rank of 20th.

MacMillan defenses: 19th.

I agree with you, I just find it ridiculous he always makes the all defensive teams when there are defensive specialists who are much more worthy.

i've stated my thoughts on chandler already. if mike went to a top 10 defensive team with chandler. the lakers wont have a problem defensively with a a way better defensive presence in howard.

I don't think Howard is any better than Chandler, defensively. The difference with Howard is he shows up on a lot more highlight reels because of alley-oops and those monster help-side blocks that always show up on the highlight reel.

Discipline and focus-wise, Chandler is a better player. Dwight's happy go-lucky attitude is a double-edged sword. Especially in a market like LA, and especially when you're on the same team as Kobe.

Offensively, Dwight is better. He's virtually unstoppable on those dives to the low post. And he's absolutely quicker when he can face up from in close. Back to the basket, he has trouble, and doesn't have too many moves.

Chandler doesn't have much of an offensive game outside of putbacks from offensive boards.

So, imo, the biggest difference between Chandler and Howard is on the offensive end.

Where I question Mike Brown's firing is the timing. While I don't think he's a good coach, I don't think he's a bad one either. And firing him right before a 6-game homestand still leaves a lot of variables on the table that would effect the outcomes of the games.

The teams they play, especially at the beginning, are questionable. Golden State and Sacramento. The Spurs would be a serious test, and Phoenix and Houston would the games where you could get an accurate gauge of where the Lakers are offensively and defensively. Brooklyn is questionable because they look to be kind of a mess right now, despite winning games.

If they finished the home stand 3-3 or better (with a win over at least HOU or PHX), then I would say Brown stays. Any worse (or they lose to both HOU or PHX), then I would say the Mike Brown Experiment didn't work.

Otherwise, if by some chance the Lakers go 6-0 on this homestand, what do you attribute the wins to? Spending 10 days at home with no travel? Player chemistry finally mixing? The temporary assignment of Bickerstaff? Or, re-hiring Phil (let's face it, that's where everyone thought that was going)?

I like the Lakers and the Raps. For the most part, I just cheer for entertaining games, though. And as a basketball coach, I like to watch the really well-coached teams like the Spurs, who I think are one of the most underrated teams in recent memory.

Some really good games last night though.

All the games were pretty good last night.

DEN-MIA is always fun to watch because both teams are basically designed for transition basketball.

The Knicks coming back to win was surprising. I haven't watched the game yet, but they showed a bit of the game last night when they Spurs were up 8-10 points with a few minutes left. Too bad they switched it back to the Celtics-Nets game, though.

One thing that bugged me last night, and I didn't realize how much I didn't like it until last last, was the inbounding rule.

If the NBA is going to allow that amount of timeouts per team, then they have to eliminate the ability to inbound the ball into the backcourt (when inbounding from the front court). With all those timeouts, the coaches better be able to draw something up to get someone open, rather than rely on the ability to play the angles and chuck the ball into the backcourt.

Miami should be embarrassed, even though any team can beat any team at any given time. Within the span of a week you almost lost to the San Antonio B squad then go and lose against Washington despite LBJ's triple double.

brucebanner
12-05-2012, 01:01 AM
I agree with you LongCity, they definitely should be embarrassed. Losing to one of the worst teams in the league, when you're a top tier team shouldn't really happen. A lot of people have been talking about how the Heat have been basically gliding by until the forth and then pulling out the W. Maybe this will be a wake-up call for them.

Raptors almost come back today, although they played some extremely sloppy ball in the first half. If they had it somewhat together in the first half, maybe they would have pulled out a W against a very good Nuggets team.

I think the Raptors have to get rid of Bargs while he still has decent value, he has been there long enough to show he isn't the player they thought he was going to be. Not sure who I would rather than him, in a fair value trade though.

Definitely sad to see Ed Davis leave as well as Calderon, especially for how long he's stuck with the team. Calderon getting traded was no surprise to me though, he had already been "traded" to Charlotte back in 2010 but I think the Bobcats owners didn't approve the deal or something.

Raptors should have just drafted Gay instead of Bargnani from the beginning  Gay had a great debut, hefty contract but you gotta pay to play I guess..

Josh Smith for Bargnani, Fields, + others?? We can only dream lol but the Raps would definitely be a much powerful team if BC managed to pull that off.

Anyone see the exchange tonight between Matt Devlin and the rapper Wale? Devlin was joking around on air saying Drake was a better rapper and called him Walleye. Wale then tweeted him telling him to watch his mouth and went up to the commentators booth.

Jordan Crawford will be traded to the Celtics, according to David Aldridge.
The Celtics are looking for backcourt help with Leandro Barbosa (knee) now done for the season, so Crawford will bring exactly that. The sight of Kevin Garnett and Crawford in practice together will be something special, but it's uncertain how Crawford will fit into the Celtics rotation upon joining the team. Related: Celtics

Telfair doesn't really provide much to any team except a handful of respectable offensive games. His defence is still atrocious. With Calderon gone, Telfair basically just replaces Lucas' role as the 3rd string point guard.

JJ Redick going to the Bucks is a little weird though, but not surprising. It's probably a sign that they don't think Jennings is going to re-sign (or that Ellis isnt going to use his option) which means they'll keep JJ at the 2 for next year. It's just a weird fit now because they've added a great utility player in Reddick who will be taking minutes (for better or worse) from the trigger happy Ellis and Jennings.

Didn't Barbosa just get traded by the Celtics?

I don't think he got traded, but he injured his ACL and is out for the year, which is why the Celtics traded for Jordan Crawford

Ha. Same trade. Oops.

Anyways, I'm reading that the deadline was mostly quiet because teams didn't want to screw themselves when the new luxury tax rules kick in next year.

Where the previous CBA's luxury tax was dollar for dollar over the cap (ie. $4M over the cap meant a $4M luxury tax), the new one starts at $1.50 per dollar and increases from there.

It's been a bad 4 weeks for Brandon Knight. First Kyrie, now Deandre.

My head just exploded at work. The kids on the scoring table after the dunk are extra salt in the wound.

Terrible news for Kobe and the Lakers/fans. So many people hate the dude but you never wanna see an athlete, especially an elite one playing at his level, go out like that. Hopefully it's just a season ending and not career.
