:dunno: Next project... This shit's gotta go... And need a mantle before xmas :) (happy wife happy life scenario) But I'm no interior designer; and I should probably have a picture to work with before I pull out the jackhammer and start demo...
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/cgyreefer/Snapbucket/EE8F1407-orig.jpg
I need ideas, this looks bloody terrible; The cubby underneath just accumulates crap; it all looks terrible... The corner is frigging useless (but that window is inset from the protrusion of the fireplace, so can't just extend with a built-in etc)
That rock has got to go... That tile's got to go...
But the question is what to replace it with? We're not big fans of the modern/contemporary style, so something more traditional; but not red brick... We were eyeballing barmanjay's white marble subway tile - but not quite for us...
(Yeah, and that texture on the wall to the left - it's gotta go too... Trying to think up a way to not have to cut out and replace 800sqft of drywall where they did that mess)
Thanks in advance!

I think that's what we were eyeballing for stone work...
But wtf do we do down below and in that bloody corner that'll work with it, and the damn carpet (it's unfortunately not going away soon)

Maybe you should hire a designer if you're out of ideas?

:dunno: because they're bloody expensive, and want to redo the whole basement not just rejig a small area ;)
I did talk to three, and yeah, I'd rather have that third of my budget for better materials than for a drawing ;)

Might be worth taking the wife out and browsing showhomes for ideas?

That looks like a wood burner, which means there will be codes to follow on hearth extension and mantel material/height. See if you can pull up info online on the unit before you start.
I bought "stone" from these guys. I know a great installer if you need one.

We've browsed show homes, home shows, surfed MLS - the problems mostly that corner, and the location of the window...
I played around with a design in sketchup, with a curve back to the corner, and matched it opposite side, but it looks out of place... tried to just keep it square, and work around the window, but again, it all looks out of place due to the window...
Moving/resizing the window screws the front of the house up, and involves stucco and concrete and reframing a deck (piling for deck would obstruct window, thus loose a means of egress if we just shift it)
Yeah we might see if we can squeeze a newer wood burning insert into there / the budget... there is a gas lighter in there too...

gas or electric insert, drywall it all, get a nice reclaimed beam. finish it, use for mantel. wire it all up for a tv, do a built-in shelving unit beside it and the corner for all your a/v crap... maybe build in spaces for a 7.1/9.2 surround sound?

why not do a built in on either side like 36" up with cabinets? and get rid of the bottom of it? then finish it with drywall and do a tv above?

Why not just remove the step/overhang thing, frame the box to the floor, and cover it in the stone from the second photo you linked? Then if you want a mantle, use an old beam of rugged-looking wood. It would look contemporary (but not modern), and the earthiness of it would help keep it more traditional and classy.
With that window in the back, I don't think you're going to want to build out more on either side... Don't think you'd want to curve it either. Just cover what you have and tell your wife to throw some kind of vase with dead sticks or something in that corner. I think a bookcase like ercchry posted would be useful, but IMO it ruins the symmetry of the whole fireplace, which is very important as that should be the focal point for the room.

Do a mantle like these, but use dark wood (particularly with a light stone) and do NOT apply a glossy/shiny finish (in fact just leave it rough wood)

 Ok me likey... Where does one find beams like this locally?
Would a 11" deep built in to the sides accomodate most modern A/V equipment? Our telus satellite PVR doesn't - it's 14", but I've got a bunch of equipment to upgrade in the next few years...

Kijiji for the beams, there are a few on there. Or some ads where you can go find your own from properties with old buildings they are taking out. I'd say your pvr is the deepest thing you'd have... Or your a/v receiver

I must say the reclaimed 4x6 is pure excellence for a mantle.
If I had a fireplace, that is the best idea so far that I would do.
11" deep built-ins will not accomodate A/V equipment. a decent receiver will be way bigger than that. plus you'd need room for wires....
