Thought this would have been posted earlier. Only 5,000 made and they sold out instantaneously

Just in time for the holidays, the trend-setting coffee behemoth on Wednesday will be at the forefront of what could be yet another cultural hot button: the super premium gift card. The Starbucks Metal Card isn't made of plastic, but steel. Each specially etched card, loaded with $400, costs $50 to make, which Starbucks says explains the $450 price tag.

Did anyone snag one of these? They are selling on eBay for upwards of $4,000!

Fixed.

They are also listed for $400. There's no way I would pay $50 over face value, just so some barrista/cashier can say "oh cool, I haven't seen one of these before!"

I think with only 5,000 made $50 over face value won't get you one (not saying tiktok wants one)

Lol, I was speaking more of the original card price ($450, including $400 of credit on the card). I'm sure lots of people will pay $1000 for one though.

I use metal to pay for my coffee - they are called nickels ;)

Not for coffee.

But I do consider a single Loonie to be a 7 gram nickel (at least the ones made 2011 and earlier.) Mind you, a US quarter is just a copper penny with an 8.33% nickel coating in my eyes. If people want to accept slightly oversized brass coated nickels at a value of $1, thats fine by me.

A whole roll of real 4.54 gram nickel nickels? Dammn... Thats like steak dinner.

Of course :) As a Canadian I value everything in nickel, especially things like coffee. And Canadian dollars to 2011 are 6.4 grams of nickel with a 0.6 gram coating of Brass or Bronze.

The US dollar is a 1 gram note of cotton. 1 Yen is 1.0 grams of aluminum and can float on water.

Xmas time! Silver and gold.

The only card one should carry would be:

http://www.combibar.com/products/

To realistically pay for a coffee, you would need to break off three 1 gram silver bars however.

Pfft, whatever. Most of you guys went crazy wanting the Beyond Esso Gas Card just because there was Beyond's logo on it.

It's a shame 3/10 of those cards are probably in the garbage though.

:werd:

All of the cards on eBay for ridiculously high prices are either "buy it now" or have zero bids.

The cards that have bids are only about $150-200 over list price.

Still stupid, but not AS stupid.

When I worked at BMW a customer gave me his card to pay for a deposit on a 750i and it was a Amex black card, It was the first time I saw one so it was kind of cool, I pulled out my phone to take a picture of it... then as I'm looking at the card through my iphone I realized I was doing something terribly illegal. hahaha

EBT!

Really though, it would probably be better for an individual to get 100 cups of coffee on their card than $400, if they would allow it.

By the time you are on your last dollar on that card, I'd be willing to bet the last cup will have costed at least 50% more in dollars than the first cup.

I can remember the years when they had the coffee bean shortage and they hiked the cost from 8 cents to a whopping 12... Dagnabit.

Everyone knows that Gold credit cards aren't where its at, they sell those early. The Platinum cards are the ones that are superexclusive

Well, only eglove can confirm. As for this concept in general, it's such a waste.

At least have better incentives other than Gold status.

He must be silly then. Check his other items for sale and his Honda Fit is linked. Same car he has for sale here. Maybe some good lowball offers need to be sent his way ;)

The beyond gas card was just for this thread. Just to show that it was mine. Kinda like how other forums want you to write on a piece of paper with your username and date etc. I'll take another picture without the gas card so people can calm down.

As far as I'm concerned, if you can get more than it's worth that's great.

I mean, I can't understand how someone could be so stupid as to willingly pay more than face value for something like that but if they are, you may as well benefit from it! :nut:

Sorry. Missed the point of your last point. I was posting on the shitter at work. I'm getting lowballs of like "$350 cash right now" as opposed to what $300 in change (nickels) and a $50 visa gift card?

Honestly, if the card has $400 on it, it's gonna sell for less than $400. You see this happening all the time with gift cards that are being sold in the marketplace.

Why on earth would someone trade $400 cash for a $400 debit card that they only can use at Starbucks? That's plain stupid. And honestly, I don't think anyone would pay even $5 extra to have a silly metal card... let alone $500!

The offers of $350 aren't lowballs -- that's what the thing is worth.

I would agree with you, if I had a higher opinion of society, but I don't, and I think It'll sell for $800+... I hope eglove paid less than that. Hahahah

On a slightly off topic note:

I did see a really nice looking Walmart Gift card that had a "year of the snake design". Was seriously thinking about just putting down a few bucks and then immediately depleting the card on a purchase.

Seriously, Walmart of all places had a nice looking giftcard.

5,000 worldwide is technically pretty rare.

In my perspective: They made 201,050 nickels in the year 1925 for Canada, and those go for anywhere between $100 and $1,000.

The US also printed 3 billion $100 bills in 2012, and people collect those too.

Expired giftcards might actually have some collector value 100 years from now. I can imagine by then people will say "We used to use little plastic cards with magnetic stripes and chips on them before they started using long distance wireless DNA scanners"

Tell you what, if you can't sell it - use up the $400 and I might make you an offer for just the empty balance card.
