A friend's GF is hell bent on getting a VW but they are maxed at 10K to spend, probably more around 8K is realistic. I haven't looked at VW's for years so I'm not sure what to recommend. I thought the TDIs and VR6s are pretty bulletproof but for those in know, what would you suggest? Common problems? I guess she wants standard which is great because I seem to remember the auto trannies not being that great.

In that range she would probably only be able to afford a mk4 or lower. Tell her to prepare another 10K for repairs.

The "bullet proof" motors are the vr6 and the 2.0L. But these motors obviously need their fair share of maintenance so im not sure if it is even considered bullet proof.

Get a Jetta or Golf TDI 5SPD, get it inspected at TuneDub, ask George his opinion on the 04+ TDI's and pre-04 models.

They can all be good, just get it checked at Tunbedub first.

VR6 engines are great maintenance wise, as are the 2.0L's and newer 2.5L's. Don't know enough about the TDI's, but I've worked on enough of the turbo engines to know that while being very good, they do tend to break things.

Your best bet is a 2003 GLI. Comes with the 24v VR6 (very reliable) and 02m 6spd tranny (also very reliable)

Just take whatever to tunedub FIRST and George will set you on the right path.
