I am looking to get more information about the Subaru 2.5 RS coupes, which were made until 2001 I beleive. I am not sure of when they started making these, but I would like to know some info on these, ie: HP, engine size, aftermarket support.

I am also wondering why some of these came with bronze wheels, and some seem to have the fog light bumper while others don't.

Anyways, here is an example of what I am talking about.

Made from 1998 - 2001

The gold wheels only came on the 1998 models. The silver came on the years to follow (with a wheel design change in 2000)

RS's that are 1999+ AND sold in the US came with the big fog light bumpers. The 1998 US and all 1998-2001 in Canada came with the little foglight bumpers. Reason being is that the big fog light bumper didnt meet crash standards in Canada.

1999-2001 - 165hp/166ftlb (phase 2 motor)
1998 - 165hp/164ftlb (phase 1 motor)

All 2.5L

Decent aftermarket support but starting to die now since the cars 2 generations old already.

98's seem to have the most problems (namely headgasket failures). The interiors are slightly different too (different seats, no white face gauges, no leather shift boot, etc). Your best to find a 2000/2001.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask

I was going to say, seeing as they had a different engine in the 98s to the other ones... Was it a major problem with thje headgaskets? or was this covered by some sort of recall?

And does anyone know of any of these for sale?

Calm down man, it was just a suggestion. You never said you had money restraints or anything.

no recall on the 98's.. it is covered in the warrenty if the car has warrenty still remaining.

Is there any difference between the 99 and 00-01 RS?

Rims changed in 00 from 99, thats all I know of. I had a 99 White RS, I loved it but sold it to get a house. I only had trouble with the MAP sensor which was a recall, and a spot weld let go on the oil pan, which was warranty. I loved the car,but it just didn't have the jam to move the AWD like I thought it should. My next car will be a 02 WRX after driving one I wouldn't go back to NA but I still like the looks of the RS better. Good Luck with the Buy,sweet pic.

Is it unreasonable to swap in a turbo'd engine from a WRX into a 2.5RS? Or is it more logical to just turbo the existing motor? I love these cars too, and if they had the turbo power like the WRXs I think they'd be great

99RS has a few differences. no rear LSD, MAF sensor, lower compression engine(9.7:1) and different style of wheels.

turbo or swap is going to be +10G's to do it properly.

OH really?! I didnt know that. That is good to know. Because it would definately be better having the LSD. So, no LSD in the 98 and 99, but 00 and 01 had it?

Hmm, ok.. thats good to know.

try looking on autotrader. usually a few for sale on there. if you are serious about getting one i suggest you find a 99-01. the 98's are extremely problematic.

^^ arent they expensive still? like 15-18k? if it was that price i rather grab a new 2005 ts sedan for 23.. at least it has warrenty and is new

thats the thing. i've seen 00-01 rs's go for anywhere in the 16-20k range in the past year depending on condition/mileage. while this generation of impreza is rare and looks different, on the other hand you can have a used wrx or brand new TS off the lot for a few thousand more with warranty.

keep in mind htere is a LOT more maintenance involved as well, equating to additional time and money spent

I am going to take in to account, all of your advice.

I have noticed that people are asking a fair amount for these 2.5rs's.. and I definately don't think I would ever pay 20,000 for one, especially because new ones go for not much more money.

I would be willing to pay around 13-16k, or somewhere around there, but not much more.

i doubt you'll be able to find one in good condition for that price range.. but yea if push comes to shove forget the old ones and buy a new ts sedan that comes in around march.. has everythin the rs has right now except spoiler/fogs and the black interior.. other than that they are basically identical.. good luck though

Well, I don't think I could afford a brand new subaru, that is why I am looking for one of these... If I cannot find one for the amount I can spend, then I will look in to other cars.
