Does every SUV suffer from this problem in Winter or just my nissan Xterra.

Everytime I open the trunk door and put it up it doesnt stay up it just falls back down again and closes - at -25 it usually closes all the way, at -5 to -10 it sort of falls down a little bit enough to be a pain in the arse. Even at +5 it doesnt stay upright.

I once took it into nissan and they told me that the gas in the struts dont work at sub zero temps and every suv has this problem - I havent noticed too many people having the same issues though.

Do you find this to be a problem?

No, you most likely need to replace the struts.

Easy job you can do yourself.

Sounds like the support struts are done. My old hatch back did the same thing lol.

Easy job as noted, just make sure you have someone holding the hatch up for you while replacing the struts. Hatches can be heavy, so a manly man is needed. I would not do it with a piece of lumber, wood can fall or slip out... don't ask me how I know this.

Anyone know where I would get it replaced if I didn't want to do it myself - Im not the greatest with DIY and don't have a lot of free time to figure it out.

My 350Z's trunk had the same issune in winter. When the weather was nice, there were no problems. Maybe just a Nissan thing.

Seriously man - it is a super easy task. Do you know how to unscrew a lightbulb? If so, you can probably replace a liftgate strut.

I have 05 murano and it seems a common issue for all nissan vehicles.
Yes I do have same issue. :)

I have an '06 X-Trail and have had zero issues with my struts in cold weather. That being said, I had the same issue you're having with my old Integra, bought replacements from Canadian Tire and replaced them and it was like new again. It really is an easy DIY job.

I have always had this issue with both new and old cars. replacements would normally not fix the issue. It's cold, and I live with the problems.

However, it is an easy thing to change out if you want to do it.

i have an '03 QX4 and the struts are fine.... however the bottom locking hinge doesn't catch right when it is below -15. I have to close it a few times or slam it hard to get it to catch correctly. anyone have similar issue?

A thin lubricant will work on your latch, they make sprays specifically for locks.

I changed a few hood struts while I was at nissan, the 300zx would slam like a mother fucker lol, same with supras. I'm sure theres a few supra owners who know what a failed strut is like haha.

My Honda pilot's struts actually work too stiff in the winter and it becomes hard to erect the shafts the entire way. ;)

Depends on the strut you buy too. If you buy a cheap strut it still might not work in winter. I've had a few die on me (I'd blame it a nissan thing but the only vehicles I've had with struts were nissans)
Simple fix. And pretty cheap. I had ones I replaced and they mostly held at -40.

Yep my 240 definitely had this problem...but so did my uncles Trail Blazer, and my RSX.

It was the scariest in the 240, that trunk could probably cut a man in half it was so heavy.

Probably just the struts need to be replaced, I did them on a car before it was easy to replace.
